About

Kevin Patrick Smith is an American filmmaker, actor, comedian, comic book writer, author, YouTuber, and podcaster. He came to prominence with the low-budget comedy buddy film Clerks (1994), which he wrote, directed, co-produced, and acted in as the character Silent Bob of stoner duo Jay and Silent Bob. Clerks won the "Award of the Youth" and the "Mercedes-Benz Award" at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival, the "Filmmakers Trophy" at the Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for three Independent Spirit Awards (Best First Feature, Best First Screenplay and Jeff Anderson for Best Debut Performance).

The film Jay and Silent Bob also appeared in Smith's later films Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Clerks II and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, which are set primarily in his home state of New Jersey. While not strictly sequential, the films have crossover plot elements, character references, and a shared canon known as the "View Askewniverse", named after Smith's production company View Askew Productions, which he co-founded with Scott Mosier.

Since 2011, Smith has mostly made horror films, including Red State (2011) and the "comedy horror films" Tusk (2014) and Yoga Hosers (2016), two in a planned series of three such films set in Canada dubbed the True North trilogy.

Last year, Smith executive produced Masters of the Universe: Revelation for Netflix and coming later this year, Smith will release the much anticipated Clerks III via Lionsgate.

Smith owns Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash in Red Bank, New Jersey, a comic bookstore which became the setting for the reality television show Comic Book Men (2012-2018). As a podcaster, Smith co-hosts several shows on his SModcast Podcast Network, including SModcast, Fatman Beyond, and the live show Hollywood Babble-On. He is known for /participating in long, humorous Q&A sessions that are often filmed for DVD release, beginning with An Evening with Kevin Smith.

This was a once in a lifetime situation. Kevin Smith invited the Phelps family to the show. They had stated they (the Westborow Baptist Church) would be protesting the show as they had at Sundance. Kevin Smith when asked; "Why would you invite them inside the show?" stated it was the Christian thing to do. When asked again later on said; "Who would not want to watch Star Wars with Darth Vader in the audience with you?" The plan was that Kevin would share the stage with one of the Phelps family in a Q&A after the movie. Said member left with the rest of the protesting arm of the church before even 15 into the movie. However, two members of the family that have left the church did stay for the entire showing and worked their way to the front of the Q&A line. Kevin invited the two onstage and the self labeled "Black Sheep" of the Phelps clan had an interview with him. Very enlightening hearing their accounts and views and how they see the world differently now from their family.

The film is disturbing but very worth watching. Great performances by great stars. The Q&A afterward was very interesting. Kevin Smith, as always, was entertaining.

  • Red State - A Must See

by DWave33 on 3/15/11The Midland by AMC - Kansas CityRating: 4 out of 5

From plot to acting to choices that surprise, an unforgettable show. It did help that I was able to see a Q & A with a few Phelps that had 'escaped' the cult-like atmosphere of the Topeka based clan that this film was extrapolated from.

  • Incredible evening for film lovers

Kevin Smith has made arguably his best film yet in this genre bending thrill ride. The very things that some critics have cited as negatives, are in fact, the refreshing qualities. The "overly long" sermon by the preacher is an important story building point which could not have been more fun to watch. The sudden curves he throws at the audience aren't annoying... THEY'RE FUN! This is a suspense/horror movie like you haven't seen in a long time. I would say it's like Tobe Hooper and Robert Rodriguez got together and made a John Carpenter movie.

This show was amazing, The movie was like nothing else Kevin Smith has ever done. The Q&A after the movie started a bit slow and disappointing, but this can only be blamed on the audience members not asking questions that didn't involve attempts promote oneself. The Q&A portion was saved by the appearance of Libby Phelps and Joshua Phelps-Roper who able to provide the audience with first hand tales of growing up within the Westboro Baptist Church.

  • Amazing Event

by SConstance on 3/14/11The Midland by AMC - Kansas CityRating: 5 out of 5

The movie itself was something to stand out amongst all movies of the type, I thought it was quite good. The acting in it was great with a cast of a few A-list actors and some others that were not so well known, all working together to do a great credit to the movie. The speeches of Kevin Smith and at the end of the Rebel Phelps' was also something to credit it as a very unique experience to Kansas City. The Phelps' of the Westboro Baptist Church, of Topeka, KS, were there for only about 15 minutes after the start of the movie, leaving due to being too bad for them to handle, and they didn't even get to the good parts of the movie.

I bought these tickets as a Valentine's day gift for my husband who has been a Kevin Smith fan for longer than I've known him. It was quite the memorable event indeed! The fact that the Phelps family attended made it even more intense and insane to witness. Kevin Smith was a fantastic host both to the audience and the Phelps' and I commend him on his new film. The movie itself is one I will recommend to any open minded, big hearted, socially consciencious person I know. It was well written, well executed, and Smith's attention to detail was outstanding. Thank for a memorable night and for making me the best wife ever!

  • Res State is worth the viewing

by Bricyn on 3/14/11The Midland by AMC - Kansas CityRating: 4 out of 5

To be completely honest, this movie isn't going to be eveyone's cup of tea, but it if you are fan of Kevin Smith films, it is worth it. The film is out of Kevins comfort zone but still has the one-liners that Kevin Smith is known for. The Q&A afterwards was totally worth it, for two members of the Phelps family were in the audince and Kevin brought them up on stage.

  • left speechless IT WAS AMAZING!

Well worth the money for the best seats! The atmosphere was incredible, I think it truly had to do with the fact that Kevin Smith is amazing and that the Phelps were there. No where else in the US could have the same atmosphere that we were able to have. We have had the Phelps in our lives forever, and literally in our backdoor... and seeing this and their reaction was just PRICELESS!!! Every time Kevin Smith comes to KC, I will BE THERE!

  • Red State Rocks!

by EvrClr on 3/11/11Harris Theater - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Kevin Smith once again delivered as promised. His new film Red State is a horror film in the genre sense that it will scare you to realize people as evil as the Cooper's actually exist in today's society. The Q&A that followed was as hilarious as the film was scary. Red State comes to theaters in October. Don't miss it!
