Kentucky Wildcats Women’s Basketball History

The University of Kentucky first fielded a women’s basketball team in 1902, but the team officially became a varsity program in 1974. The Wildcats qualified for their first March Madness run in 1982 and reached the Elite Eight. That same year, the team secured their first conference tournament championship. Under head coach Matthew Mitchell, the Wildcats returned to the Elite Eight in 2010, 2012 and 2013 and secured their first regular season title in the Southeastern Conference. The Kentucky women’s basketball team claimed their second SEC tournament championship in 2022.

Kentucky Wildcats Women’s Basketball at Memorial Coliseum

The Kentucky Wildcats women’s team competes at Memorial Coliseum, which opened in 1950 as the University of Kentucky’s primary athletic center. Initially, Memorial Coliseum was shared by the men’s and women’s basketball teams until the completion of the men’s team’s current home court Rupp Arena in 1976. Memorial Coliseum now houses four of the school’s women’s teams: basketball, volleyball, gymnastics and STUNT. In 2022, Memorial Coliseum underwent extensive renovation and reopened ahead of the 2024-25 college basketball season with a seating capacity of 6,250.

  • Subpar Arena

by LSUfan on 2/26/25Memorial Coliseum - LexingtonRating: 3 out of 5

The atmosphere for two ranked SEC teams was subpar. Both teams put on a great show, but the venue is terrible. Metal bleacher seats in an updated arena much smaller than Rupp Arena. Women's team should have the same atmosphere as the mens especially when playing such a high caliber ranked team. Entertainment was poor and concessuon stand lines were ridiculous. Will not be going back to the Historical Memorial Colliseum.

  • Great experience

Took my 10 year old daughter to her First Lady Cats game. Memorial Coliseum is an incredible venue and the experience was extremely high value.

  • Great event and great renovations-Volume Problems!

    by Jen C on 2/16/25Memorial Coliseum - LexingtonRating: 4 out of 5

The renovations at memorial are great! The building looks clean and updated. The gymnastics events are always a lot of fun. However since the renovations the sound is dangerously loud. I’ve attended two events this season and I’ve had to leave early due to the sound. It was never this loud before this season. I want to attend another event but I will have to bring ear protection to enjoy it.

  • Women’s Basketball Game (Arkansas)

by Suz on 1/29/25Memorial Coliseum - LexingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The seats were easy to purchase. Where we had seats was great. We were not too far up to be able to see & enjoy the game. We had a great time. I hope to be able to purchase tickets as easily as this time & come to the next home game. This was the Women’s Arkansas game.

  • Fun!

  • Super Fun Atmosphere

by Wildcat Carla on 11/19/24Memorial Coliseum - LexingtonRating: 4 out of 5

Had a great time at the UK v UofL women's basketball game. This was my 1st time in the renovated Memorial Coliseum and, while I miss the nostalgia of old, the update is amazing. We sat in GA and found it roomy and comfortable for bleacher seats. I gave it 4 out of 5 as the lines for concessions was insane. It took my soon the biggest part of the 1st quarter and into the 2nd to get 2 ice creams. All in all, we had a great experience.

  • Great game, where is my sandwich?

by Bdub on 11/10/24Memorial Coliseum - LexingtonRating: 4 out of 5

I had a great experience and getting into the arena was seamless. However, I don’t know where I can access my free chick-fi-a sandwich that every wildcat fan won that night.

The game was so much fun. The “games” during timeouts were fun. Overall a great experience.
