Kentucky Wildcats Men's Basketball History

The University of Kentucky Wildcats have one of the most storied programs in all of men’s college basketball, leading all NCAA Division I basketball teams with the most all-time wins, highest all-time winning percentage and a record for total NCAA Tournament appearances. Kentucky has won an impressive 53 regular-season conference titles and 32 conference tournament championships, in addition to the National Invitation Tournament in 1946 and 1976. The Wildcats have been crowned NCAA Tournament champions eight times between 1948 and 2012.

The University of Kentucky men's basketball team played their first season in 1903, one year after the school’s women's basketball team was founded. Adolph Rupp took over as head coach for the men’s team in 1930, leading the Wildcats to their first four titles in 1948, 1949, 1951 and 1958. Rupp was replaced upon his retirement in 1972 by assistant coach Joe B. Hall, who brought Kentucky their fifth title in 1978. After coaching the NBA’s New York Knicks, Rick Pitino took over in 1989 and captured the 1996 championship before leaving after the next season to coach the Boston Celtics. In 1998, first-year coach Tubby Smith led Kentucky to a seventh championship, and the Wildcats captured their eighth title under coach John Calipari in 2012.

Countless legends have suited up for Kentucky, including coaches Pat Riley and Travis Ford, and players such as Dan Issel, Louie Dampier, Antoine Walker, Kenny "Sky" Walker, Rajon Rondo and Rex Chapman. Within the past 20 years, NBA All-Stars such as Karl-Anthony Towns, Anthony Davis, Devin Booker, DeMarcus Cousins and John Wall have played for the Wildcats. Kentucky has numerous conference and national rivals, but their in-state rivalry with Louisville is the most heated by far, further stoked by former Wildcats coach Rick Pitino leading the Cardinals from 2001 to 2017.

As a Kentucky Wildcats fan from the 1990's to today, Big Blue Madness did NOT disappoint at all! Mark Pope is the epitome of what it means to be a KENTUCKY WILDCAT. I am extremely pumped for the upcoming season and seasons to come. Go Big Blue!!!! 💪🏼🏀💙

  • It was awesome

by BBN on 10/14/25Rupp Arena - LexingtonRating: 5 out of 5

It was loud and energetic. I am super excited for the season. It was really great to see John Wall. The cheerleaders were amazing. The only complaint I have is that it was really cold in there. Other than that, it was awesome.

  • THE BEST BBM EVER

  • Decent experience

by Jennie on 10/14/25Rupp Arena - LexingtonRating: 3 out of 5

Always a fun event. UK can do better with tickets. I was 600 in line. Could not get lower arena or 4 tickets at the same time. Had to log out and back in . So I ended up with tickets behind the stage 2nd level and another pair in upper level row U. UK can do better about their fans wanting to get tickets. I mean it doesn’t hold l, what 22,00 or 27,000 and I was 600 in queue

  • Great event!

Big blue madness was a great experience! Will be back!

  • Better Signage Needed to sections.

by Cas on 10/14/25Rupp Arena - LexingtonRating: 4 out of 5

The event was good, but I wish there were better directional signage when entering Rupp Arena. We came in and followed the signs for our section/seats when in fact if we had walked in the other direction our distance would have been much shorter. There were seniors in my group and the long walk was very hard for them. Maybe some signage stating sections 22-44 & 222-244 to the right and 12-21 & 212-221 to the left. Just something to be a little more helpful.

  • Disappointed with the seat view, not as advertised

by sdkferris on 2/11/25Rupp Arena - LexingtonRating: 2 out of 5

I have bought many tickets thru Ticketmaster before and this is the first time that upon arrival I had my view partially obstructed from a corner of a big screen which was hanging in front of us and off to the right side. Within the Ticketmaster website upon choosing the seats they give you a view from the seat choice and it never mentioned or showed any sort of obstruction. As one might imagine I was disappointed upon arrival.

  • Rupp and the Cats are great; food options SUCK!

by Sarah, Wildcat FAN on 1/25/25Rupp Arena - LexingtonRating: 5 out of 5

I'm more than half a dozen home games into the season, and so shocked that RUPP sucks at food options for fans. It makes NO sense to me. The venue is awesome, the CATS pack the arena, everyone is excited to be there ... but there are no decent food options. Gas station pizza, old hot dogs, expired chips with cold dip ... and past THREE games, they have fun out of pretzels and. hot dogs at the concession stand near the end zone. Hard to believe. OH, they never run out of beer and you can get it at virtually every single aisle. They took away the food court down in the mall a few years back, so there's not even that option before a game. And they used to have at least 4 vendors running the little booths around the arena. But once they got beer, now all they have is beer, and Kroger walk thru - what a joke that is - like the candy they have at a checkout, but not even that good. Sometimes there is a smashburger, or a City BBQ taco option. Sometimes there is the homphobic ChickfilA. But the food is not consistent, and the run out at half time. Unless you want beer or ice cream you better not count on food at Rupp for UK games. Good thing the CATS are worth it without any sustenance. So disappointed in the new Rupp policies - why did having beer have to screw up food vendors? What a loss of potential revenue. I've talked to people who drive in for the games for hours and ask, so where's something good to eat? Ha ha, there isn't. They are bumfuzzled.

  • horrible seats

by stephanie on 1/21/25Rupp Arena - LexingtonRating: 3 out of 5

Definitely wouldn't recommend sitting in section 211 numbers 1-10 at least. Huge tv screen caused an obstructed view that wasn't known or listed to us when we purchased the tickets. Sucks to pay $600 for tickets and barely be able to see.

  • Rupp was Lit up! But NO food options at games anymore!

by Sarah, Wildcat FAN on 1/8/25Rupp Arena - LexingtonRating: 4 out of 5

Mostly if I'm at Rupp, it's to watch the Kentucky Wildcats play basketball. But I go there for any old classic rock bands as well. This time was to see Kentucky play Florida, in our first SEC game of the 2024/2025 season. And it was electrified. The crowd went wild at every call, good or bad. I was sitting in the enemy end zone ;) and my view was blocked quite a bit by the goal/basket, but it is what it is for basketball setup. The facility is nice. Entry and accessibility is pretty good considering it is a basketball arena. The security staff is decent. I have a pacemaker and defibber, so can't go thru metal detector nor be wanded, and that usually causes trouble, but I ask for Polly McCray and she takes care of me. The blue coats are mostly nice, but they can get a little power crazy too, especially around the ERUPPtion zone, but for the most part, the staff is all good. The seats with back in lower are preferable to any other seats. Even the seats with backs in the end zones (above eRUPPtion and enemy end) are lousy, tight and not comfy. And the bench areas in upper are miserable, but cheap ;). My real complaint is the food vendors, or lack of. They used to have some options, not bad. But now that they've goe to BEER, it is all focused around BEER and very little food options. It's gas station pizza, bag of chips and cold cheese dip, hot dog or pretzel. That is, IF they haven't sold out of even those items! Rarely, they still have the bowl of shredded pork with sauce, slaw, but rarely anymore. You can get beer anywhere, at the top of every aisle. But if you want food, you can't even get food downstairs, outside of Rupp like you used to. They took out the food court too! Makes no sense to me. You have folks driving for hours to go toa UK game, they will pay to eat anything remotely better than gas station pizza, but there is nothing available. I guess they are just now catering to the folks who have CLUB tickets and can go to the private area to eat at the buffet line. But if you jut want to grab a sandwich or tacos at the game, not an option any more. I just don't get it. Food at a basketball game is a NO brainer! Or should be. Used to be you could get City BBQ, build a taco, hamburgers, and now - expired chips, 2 day old pizza.

  • Best Madness in Years!

by Pat on 10/14/24Rupp Arena - LexingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The new Floor was Amazing, the three point shooting contest with Travis Perry and Trent Noah in the finals was great! Chandler’s dunk over Pope and his wife was really funny. But when they introduced all the old players and the team NCAA Championship trophies, and then Rick Pitino. It made it a Special night to remember.
