Kentucky Wildcats Men's Basketball History

The University of Kentucky Wildcats have one of the most storied programs in all of men’s college basketball, leading all NCAA Division I basketball teams with the most all-time wins, highest all-time winning percentage and a record for total NCAA Tournament appearances. Kentucky has won an impressive 53 regular-season conference titles and 32 conference tournament championships, in addition to the National Invitation Tournament in 1946 and 1976. The Wildcats have been crowned NCAA Tournament champions eight times between 1948 and 2012.

The University of Kentucky men's basketball team played their first season in 1903, one year after the school’s women's basketball team was founded. Adolph Rupp took over as head coach for the men’s team in 1930, leading the Wildcats to their first four titles in 1948, 1949, 1951 and 1958. Rupp was replaced upon his retirement in 1972 by assistant coach Joe B. Hall, who brought Kentucky their fifth title in 1978. After coaching the NBA’s New York Knicks, Rick Pitino took over in 1989 and captured the 1996 championship before leaving after the next season to coach the Boston Celtics. In 1998, first-year coach Tubby Smith led Kentucky to a seventh championship, and the Wildcats captured their eighth title under coach John Calipari in 2012.

Countless legends have suited up for Kentucky, including coaches Pat Riley and Travis Ford, and players such as Dan Issel, Louie Dampier, Antoine Walker, Kenny "Sky" Walker, Rajon Rondo and Rex Chapman. Within the past 20 years, NBA All-Stars such as Karl-Anthony Towns, Anthony Davis, Devin Booker, DeMarcus Cousins and John Wall have played for the Wildcats. Kentucky has numerous conference and national rivals, but their in-state rivalry with Louisville is the most heated by far, further stoked by former Wildcats coach Rick Pitino leading the Cardinals from 2001 to 2017.

by Kenton on 10/14/24Rupp Arena - LexingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Always a fun event, but now with Pope at the helm it's even more fun. Had a blast with my daughter watching both the men and women putting on a show for all Big Blue fans.

It was the best BBM I have been to in years! It was a breath of fresh air seeing pope getting introduced as Head Coach my daughter said multiple times thru the night it was the best experience of her life! I appreciate all the work that was put into it! Thank you University Of Kentucky!

  • Disappointed

by Nkycats on 2/28/24Rupp Arena - LexingtonRating: 3 out of 5

The seats were partially blocked by jumbo tron. When purchasing tickets, that was NOT in the picture..very deceptive.

  • Kentucky vs. Alabama

by Hopsing on 2/28/24Rupp Arena - LexingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Watching Kentucky put up 117 points against Alabama was a tremendous experience. Rupp Arena was rocking. The fan base was loud and we loved it. There’s nothing like experiencing a basketball game in Rupp Arena, the environment is like none other. I look forward to watching many more in the future.

  • obstructed view

by Cal on 2/27/24Rupp Arena - LexingtonRating: 2 out of 5

it was a great game in a fun environment. but Section 228 row J seats 1-3 are partially blocked by the jumbotron making it difficult to see the score board and difficult to see the court when standing.

  • Love Rupp. Better after improvements to nosebleed section.

by Hm on 2/4/24Rupp Arena - LexingtonRating: 5 out of 5

After remodel on sides and new chairs, the climb to nosebleed section much more doable. The ends with basketball nets still bleachers in nosebleed section. Concessions seem more frequent on main level also so that was nice.

  • Seats were ok, not great.

by SB on 1/23/24Rupp Arena - LexingtonRating: 3 out of 5

Our seats were right behind the walkway. Not what we expected. There was also a railing in our view. Will not purchase these seats again. We paid extra for the seats and I feel like this should be disclosed.

  • Go Cats

by Doug on 1/21/24Rupp Arena - LexingtonRating: 5 out of 5

My family and I are very grateful for the discount tickets for veterans. Seats were great, Cats Won!

  • Bad Experience

by Frankie on 12/5/23Rupp Arena - LexingtonRating: 1 out of 5

I bought tickets to the Kentucky game on December 2nd In section 211 because it says on the website that chair back seats have replaced bleachers in section 211-217 and 228-234 so I got section 211 row b and when I got there they were bleacher seats , false advertising first of all and I have a very bad back so I couldn’t stay very long , wasted money and I’m 2 hours away from rupp arena

  • Awesome game!

by Angie on 11/30/23Rupp Arena - LexingtonRating: 5 out of 5

It was a great game! We enjoyed it so much! From the basketball players to the cheerleaders. Also enjoyed the halftime show.

  • FANtastic

by Patrick on 11/27/23Rupp Arena - LexingtonRating: 5 out of 5

It starts with close by parking. A wide assortment of concessions and team gear. Not a bad seat in the house. It was a FANtastic experience.

  • UK BASKETBALL

    by K. H. on 2/13/23Rating: 5 out of 5

  • UK Basketball

by UKPat on 2/10/23Rupp Arena - LexingtonRating: 1 out of 5

I’ve been a UK fan for over 50 years but this team is not fun to watch. Calipari can’t make any adjustments and opponents keep exploiting our weaknesses. Cal should try actually coaching rather than yelling to get the players to play better. He has no clue! I have tickets to the Auburn game but if will be the last UK game I attend until changes are made on the coaching staff.

  • It was very hard to get the barcode to come up on my phone !

by Jtown on 1/13/23Rupp Arena - LexingtonRating: 2 out of 5

Could not get the barcode to come up on my phone so it could be scanned at the game ! Make it easier!

  • Great experience for Grand Kids!

by Papa on 1/13/23Rupp Arena - LexingtonRating: 4 out of 5

Not true KY basketball; the coach and team are not in sync. The Arena and all staff were great. Safe, friendly, family evening.

  • Great game, bad seats

    by Tbhuff76 on 1/6/23Rupp Arena - LexingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Section 211 is terrible...the view is blocked by glass handrail. We moved to another section after the game started.
