About

Kentucky Wildcats Football History

The University of Kentucky first fielded a football team in 1881, and has consistently competed since the 1891 season. Legendary coach Paul "Bear" Bryant led the Wildcats from 1946 to 1953 and steered Kentucky to a dream season in 1950, where they went 11-1, won the SEC title and defeated the unbeaten Oklahoma Sooners in the Sugar Bowl. The Wildcats also won a share of the 1976 SEC title under coach Fran Curci, and finished 10-1 the next season. Head coach Hal Mumme brought his electric "Air Raid" offense to Kentucky in the late ’90s and early ’00s, which helped quarterback Tim Couch be selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 1999 NFL Draft. In 2019, head coach Mark Stoops ensured Kentucky was a force to be reckoned with, installing a hard-hitting defense that produced one of the top prospects for the 2019 NFL Draft in linebacker Josh Allen. Stoops also helped the Wildcats notch two of the team’s four all-time 10-win seasons.

Over the years, Kentucky has had many legendary players, including Pro Football Hall of Famer George Blanda, who played under Bear Bryant, center Dermontti Dawson, wide receiver Randall Cobb and Jared Lorenzen. During the Mark Stoops era, many top players have led the way, including Josh Allen and running back Benny Snell Jr. They both led the Wildcats to a 27-24 victory in the 2019 Citrus Bowl over No. 13 Penn State en route to a No. 12 ranking in the AP poll at the end of the 2018 season.

The Kentucky Wildcats have heated rivalries against SEC East teams Tennessee and Vanderbilt, cross-division foes Mississippi State and and in-state competitors Louisville, who they face annually in the Governor's Cup.

    Love my Cats

    by Catinthe731 on 11/12/19Kroger Field - Lexington

But... Too much orange there! And too many empty seats. Unfortunately I had some obnoxious UT fans behind me, who of course got nasty at the end. IMHO, had there been more blue and less empty seats, we could have got the W on Saturday.

    Great time!

    by G. on 10/16/19Kroger Field - Lexington

Great atmosphere and although we sat fairly high up in the stands, the seats were very good. We have sat in the 229 section before, as we did this game, and would definitely purchase tickets for this section again (unless similar ticket prices are available closer to the field, which doesn't happen often).

    It was fantastic.

by Happy on 9/17/19Kroger Field - Lexington

The football team was so kind and humble. From the coaches to the players. They were worth the money to watch them play. But how they treated me and the fans. Was just awesome. I have become a much bigger fsn of Kentucky football by being here and meeting them. If your on the fence if you should come to the football games. Let me tell you. You will love it.

    Couldn't be happier

by Crusty Old Cats Fan on 9/17/19Kroger Field - Lexington

The game was part of the UK family weekend celebration, so we knew tickets would sell quickly. As an alumni association member we had access to seats before they went on sale to the general public. The purchase process was fast, smooth and flawless. Tickets were delivered in a timely manner. Selling and delivering tickets is what you do, and it's all I need from you. Do that, and we're good. When we arrived at the game there was a personalized thank you note taped to the seat back of our seats. That was a nice touch.

    Florida Game

    by l. h. on 9/17/19Kroger Field - Lexington

We had 5 tickets to start, we sold the 5th back to ticketmaster and they sold the seat next to us and that seat had 2 people sitting in that seat. Terrible and squished. Should be more regulation.

Had our grandkids with us and we had a great time. They liked that we were on the top row and could see everything. Go CATS.

    Great First Impression

    by twx2 on 9/3/19Kroger Field - Lexington

This was our first UK Football game and it did not disappoint! We were pleasantly surprised to find a notice on our seats showing that was our seats. I have never had this before! We had wonderful, friendly people around us to "enlighten" us about UK. We learned the chants and traditions. And a BIG W made it that much better!!
