About The Kentucky Derby

Sports institutions don't get much more classic than The Kentucky Derby, one of the oldest and most popular sporting events in the world. Crowds well in excess of 150,000 turn out every year on the first Saturday in May to watch this thoroughbred stakes race, taking part in a piece of American history.

Lovers of the racing, the excitement, and the pageantry have been turning out to see The Kentucky Derby every year since 1875. That's when Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr. (grandson of legendary explorer William Clark) first brought the finest horses around to race at a new track in Louisville, Kentucky, that would later be dubbed Churchill Downs.

Ever since then, no matter what else was going on in the country — The Great Depression, World War I, World War II, or any other calamity — The Kentucky Derby went on, an irreplaceable part of the fabric of American life. Over the years, an entire culture has grown up around the race affectionately known as The Run for the Roses. Racegoers enjoy traditional mint juleps and burgoo stew to the playing of "My Old Kentucky Home," while the ladies show off lavish derby hats.

There's no thrill quite like the one that happens when you're watching world-class horses and jockeys work their way across the track on what has come to be widely known as "the most exciting two minutes in sports."

Naturally, the Derby tradition is rich with legendary jockeys — including record-breakers like Eddie Arcaro and Bill Hartack — and historic horses like Old Rosebud, Whirlaway, and Secretariat. More contemporary winners like Mike E. Smith on Justify and Victor Espinoza on American Pharoah carry the torch forward, bringing the best of horse racing to one of the world's most fabulously fun athletic events year after year.

    Greatest two minute Race

by Rubber Necking on 5/15/24Churchill Downs - Louisville

This was an AWESOME event! There were so many wonderful people and fashion to see. The hats are the show! I was rubber necking (looking around at everything) so much I almost forgot I was there to see the horse race. Truly the hats are needed to keep the sun off. It was a beautiful day. I was surprised at how tasty the vendor food was at the Derby. Highly recommend wearing comfortable shoes and bringing your own water (plastic bottles only allowed). I don't think it matters which area you are in, the crowd was nice, people willingly offered to take pictures and help with horse selection. The Derby is an event to be seen live!

    1st time Derby attendee

by aBeal on 5/13/24Churchill Downs - Louisville

Derby vibe was phenomenal 👒 I would definitely go again! We parked for free at the L&N credit union stadium it was about a 15walk over the bridge. I thought the tickets were way over priced just to stand in a cesspool of people or bring a lawn chair but it was a Fun day:)

    Great Derby Experience

by Scott on 5/13/24Churchill Downs - Louisville

I had a great time. The day was perfect and the infield was very tame. I thought I would get to paddock area and that did not happen with my ticket.

Glad to be back at KYD

    by houstonbackinthe502 on 5/12/24Churchill Downs - Louisville

So glad to be back in my former hometown. Brought my GF for her 1st KYD experience. I had not been to the KYD in years so many changes. Bummed the GA was so expensive. Really bummed only affordable tix to INFIELD only. Really Really bummed no access to the paddock!?! CHDN did make the experience very enjoyable unless you gave your left arm. So so expensive. Definite class segregation b/t those who have and those who have not. I was hoping to give my GF a better experience. We still had a good time but we nearly went broke haha. Anyway, CHDN needs to open the paddock area for regulars too.

    Needs more organization

by Lucy on 5/11/24Churchill Downs - Louisville

It was my first experience to the Derby. I was a little disappointed with the organization. They were not enough sings to indicate were the entrance was for the different areas. I had a ticket to the infield area and after doing a long line halfway through we realize we were in the wrong entrance, but the worse was exiting. What a horrible experience. Only one exit and imagine hundreds of people exiting at the same time. I think for been the 150 derby they have enough experience to make it a more smooth process. They need to learn from Disney o how to handle big crowds.
