About The Kentucky Derby

Sports institutions don't get much more classic than The Kentucky Derby, one of the oldest and most popular sporting events in the world. Crowds well in excess of 150,000 turn out every year on the first Saturday in May to watch this thoroughbred stakes race, taking part in a piece of American history.

Lovers of the racing, the excitement, and the pageantry have been turning out to see The Kentucky Derby every year since 1875. That's when Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr. (grandson of legendary explorer William Clark) first brought the finest horses around to race at a new track in Louisville, Kentucky, that would later be dubbed Churchill Downs.

Ever since then, no matter what else was going on in the country — The Great Depression, World War I, World War II, or any other calamity — The Kentucky Derby went on, an irreplaceable part of the fabric of American life. Over the years, an entire culture has grown up around the race affectionately known as The Run for the Roses. Racegoers enjoy traditional mint juleps and burgoo stew to the playing of "My Old Kentucky Home," while the ladies show off lavish derby hats.

There's no thrill quite like the one that happens when you're watching world-class horses and jockeys work their way across the track on what has come to be widely known as "the most exciting two minutes in sports."

Naturally, the Derby tradition is rich with legendary jockeys — including record-breakers like Eddie Arcaro and Bill Hartack — and historic horses like Old Rosebud, Whirlaway, and Secretariat. More contemporary winners like Mike E. Smith on Justify and Victor Espinoza on American Pharoah carry the torch forward, bringing the best of horse racing to one of the world's most fabulously fun athletic events year after year.

    Disappointing

by EMM on 5/9/23Churchill Downs - Louisville

The ticket process was easy and great. The infield experience at the Kentucky Derby was very disappointing. This is my fourth trip to the Derby in the infield. This time, the food lines were at least an hour long. The betting lines were 20 minutes long and very inexperienced staff. The food prices were way too high. $55 for one pizza is pretty extreme pricing. The sight lines from the infield of the race are worse than before. The video display board had parts that were blacking out. The audio feed was out of sync at times or no sound at all.

    Terrible

    by Bunny987 on 5/9/23Churchill Downs - Louisville

The infield of the Derby-was the worst experience of my life. You are herded in and out like cattle. There is only one exit, and God help anyone who would need medical attention. Shame on Churchill Downs for treating people like this

    Infield: Getting Worse Yearly

by Josh Cunninghanm on 5/9/23Churchill Downs - Louisville

First they cut the infield off from the front side. Then they suck up half the infield with fencing of various types (infield ‘upgrade’, infield grandstand, and various food staging areas). This year they cut the available places to buy drinks in half so that lines for alcohol were 45 minutes (limit 2) by 2pm. And they cut down the old food options by 2/3s but added insanely priced food trucks. If you don’t want an infield, just close it.

    Bucket list

by Derby on 5/9/23Churchill Downs - Louisville

Stood in line for most of the race. Not enough food and beverage vendors for the number of people they allow into the race. Will not go back.

Kentucky Derby not the same as it used to be

by Ed on 5/9/23Churchill Downs - Louisville

There were badly needed updates to the infield bathroom finally done but the places to buy food and beer had less people selling them huge lines the food trucks were way overpriced with huge lines too many automated betting windows not enough ticket sellers to cash tickets towards the end of the day not informed of the delay of lightning for the last race change the way people have to exit the track it took longer but I love the derby that was my 34th it's just way different

    Kentucky Derby infield

Day filled with lots of fun and debauchery unless you plan on attempting to get water or food.

    Kentucky Derby Infield Review

by Ron on 5/9/23Churchill Downs - Louisville

Overall, it was a pleasant and fun experience. Parking and entry into the event went very smooth. Restroom accommodations were also excellent. However, more food vendors and drink stations need to be available. The lines to be served were excessive and long. Also, it needs to be clearly marked which vendors, drink stations and lines are cash only. This was not as clear as it should be. Lastly, there needs to be a designated smoking area within the infield. I spent most of my day smelling cigarette and cigar smoke. Vaping should also be included in this designated area.

    Not for older adults

by Mary on 5/9/23Churchill Downs - Louisville

Too much walking involved. Restrooms were filthy. We were in the infield. When it was time to leave they herded 100,000 people through one tunnel. The prices were insane. No handicap parking. It was a once in a lifetime event. That was more than enough for me.

    Do not go infield

by Nel on 5/9/23Churchill Downs - Louisville

My first time at derby, so I didn’t know what to expect but I wanted to experience derby so went ahead and bought infield tickets (the cheapest). The infield is just made for the young crowd who want to get drunk and party, really crowded, HUGE lines for wagering, drinks and food. No seats and you don’t get to see the actual races, just picture one big tailgating party but a bunch of young kids. Now if that’s your scene then maybe you’ll enjoy it, but I’m 26 and past that phase, I would of loved to enjoy the stadium of the Churchill downs and actually be able to sit, so I would suggest to spend the extra money and buy a seat section… overall the atmosphere is great and derby is a great time in history, I’ll be back

    Disappointed

by Martin G on 5/9/23Churchill Downs - Louisville

Venue went out of the way to make sure we couldn’t see anything, and that there weren’t enough people working for dehydrated fans to buy water in less than an hour. So you’re pay a $100 to see what people wore. If you don’t pay at least $600 you’re a non person to them.

    Packed infield

    by Mycoolc1 on 5/9/23Churchill Downs - Louisville

Hour long wait in food lines, drink lines, and betting lines. The infield was way to packed. Looks like they just stuffed as many people in there as they could without adequate infrastructure.

    One and done

by MO on 5/9/23Churchill Downs - Louisville

Our first Derby. My last Derby. Took 45 minutes in line to get a beer, drink, soda or food. Stood in line 30 minutes to place race bets. Sat in the infield.

    It’s Been Better

by DK on 5/9/23Churchill Downs - Louisville

The Derby is always a great experience. They’ve done a great job of improving the parking situation. However, this year’s infield experience was lacking. Limited concessions and inefficient operations of the concessions led to long wait times for food and beverages.

    Could’ve been better

    by H on 5/9/23Churchill Downs - Louisville

Although the event has no control over the weather, the crowd control, parking and police left much to be desired. My friend and I took maybe an hour to leave the actual stadium because they are corned off the exit but not explained that. Then they fenced in the path so that you could only go one way. We ended up walking about a mile out of the way and then in the rain. Not ideal. And don’t get me started on the lines for food, drinks and betting. If I go again, it will not be with general admissions. Pay more money for a hopeful better experience. It was fun to dress up though and Louisville has a lot to offer.

    Derby was great

by Georgia Girl on 5/9/23Churchill Downs - Louisville

The infield is unfortunately losing space for attendees due to more space being taken for reserved seats. The concessions were not good, and had tremendous lines because their were few people running them. This needs to be improved.

Honestly wasn’t as cool as I was expecting, long lines, and dirty conditions.

    Below Mid Experience

by Cullen on 5/9/23Churchill Downs - Louisville

The Derby is not all it is hyped up to be. Unless you pregame it unbelievably hard, you will not have a good time in General Admission. I would hope the stands are much better, but I am not really sure. I will not go back again, until I can afford the stands.

Awesome except for the exit strategy from the Infield

by Phil on 5/9/23Churchill Downs - Louisville

The experience in the Infield is always great, including this year. However, after the Derby ran and most people were trying to exit the Infield, for some reason, they locked the gates to the tunnel that lead out of Churchill Downs. We waited over an hour to even come close to the tunnel, moving a few steps every 5 minutes. This process has never been this bad EVER. Once we got to the tunnel, we had to walk through a single gate, wind around in a maze, and then we finally reached the tunnel after an hour and a half. Whoever thought this would be a great idea should be fired.

Nothing positive at all, crowded (nobody directing people to gates and seats), lines to long, no known designated drop offs for elderly or disabled!!!!

    Slightly Disappointed

by BigMack on 5/9/23Churchill Downs - Louisville

I have been to 19 derbys and alot has changed. The good is its alot safer and crowd control was done very well but man its kinda boring. They have shrunk the infield, you can no longer walk to the paddocks and food and beverage vendors were scarce. Long lines for betting, foord/drinks. I liked it better when there was at least entertainment. Now you just sit and stare at a screen and bake in the sun. I can do that at home.
