I knew nothing about her when I went to see and hear Keiko Matsui at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia, a very pleasant, low-key, comfortable venue. I was blown away by her grace and style, the coordination of her band, and her sincere passion for music and its power to bring to the surface all that we share as people, regardless of origin or culture. Her form of "jazz" to me is much more peppy than the jazz I'm used to, and her style and eneregy are riveting. There were great periods of percussion, lovely riffs, powerful quiet notes as punctuation, and funny anecdotes. Two hours passed like minutes. No matter what she played, she was gracious and vivacious. Her band members are accomplished and coordinate flawlessly. She apparently has 20 CDs! I'll have to check those out, too. Don't miss the chance to her her perform live. She's magical, a dazzling, benevolent musical sorceress.
