  • Everything I’d hoped for

by Kit on 11/5/23The Vogel at Count Basie Center for the Arts - Red BankRating: 4 out of 5

This was our first time at The Vogel and we really appreciated the intimate setting. Kathy Mattea was as marvelous as I’d hoped and we really enjoyed the set list she selected. The musical experience was terrific. Regarding the venue, we were in the mezzanine and had the 4 seats at DD. It was extraordinary cold upstairs . Most of the guests in the rear of the mezzanine needed their coats to be comfortable. Visibility was also an issue as there was a large man seated at the rail who effectively blocked 1 persons view of the stage completely. Perhaps some offset arrangements could be considered. Overall, we were delighted with the event and look forward to returning to The Vogel!

  • Nice concert, but ...

by Occasional concert goer on 11/22/21Jimmy’s Jazz and Blues Club - PortsmouthRating: 2 out of 5

Jimmy's Jazz and Blues Club is a new venue that I had read about in the newspaper, and when I saw a listing for the Kathy Mattea concert, I investigated and bought two tickets. There wasn't much of a decent selection available by the time I made my move, and was unfamiliar with the actual in-person layout of the venue; were we surprised to find that from our seats on a second-floor "balcony", we could not see the stage at all, but had to watch the show from a wall-mounted TV screen! Not at all what we expected, and, from discussions with members of our "remote" audience, our feelings were shared by others. We also planned to have dinner there before the show; here's a tip for future attendees: eat at home or at a nearby restaurant, because the very limited selection of "small plates (not that they were labeled as such) will leave both your stomach and your wallet wanting more. Otherwise, had our seats been in either the "orchestra" or balcony directly in front of the stage, our experience would have been much better. The facility is gorgeous, but we came for the music and the food ... maybe we'll have better luck next time ...

  • I Love This Place

by JT Jazz Lover on 11/20/21Jimmy’s Jazz and Blues Club - PortsmouthRating: 5 out of 5

Kathy Mattea isn't exactly jazz, and she isn't exactly blues. But she is a great singer and performer. I am so glad that Jimmy's opened their stage to her. And she did not disappoint. WHat a great show. And now on to Jimmy's. Our first time there, and we will be back, as often as possible (an hour and a half drive+ for us). This has got to be one of the premier music venues in New England. From the first exuberant "Come on in!" greeting at the door to every staff encounter, we felt welcome and well taken care of. Jimmy's has thought of everything, from seat comfort, sight lines, sound system, to little details like the tea light on/off to signal your wait person during the show. The venue is on the 3rd and 4th floor, but the elevator is very conveniently located for those who may need it. I have some minor complaints, but they are so small or personal that this is still a 5 Star rating. Food was great, Louisiana inspired but chef visioned. I have to say, though, that I am not a fan of the small portion/tapas approach. It is difficult to know how to order to create a filling meal. On the other had, we got to try half the menu, everything was good, most were great. The PA system was excellent. You will hear well from anywhere with great sight lines from just about everywhere. Sight lines from the section behind the bar can be partially obstructed due to the renovation incorporating the old brick facade with tall arched windows. But there is a jumbotron on two opposite walls in that section that assures you will see everything. Minor comment for the sound techs. We got lucky with a table right in front of the stage. How can I possibly complain? But this turned out to be a slight dead spot between the speakers. Kathy's voice could have been clearer and crisper, but I think that was due to our positioning between the speakers. This may be less of an issue for an instrumentally driven performance. I'll still take these front table seats in a heartbeat. So those are my small critiques. This is a Five Star venue, suited to the Five Star acts they are bringing in. Welcome, Jimmy's, to New Hampshire. I've been waiting nearly 40 years for you, since we moved to NH.

  • Fine food and music

by Nreagen on 11/20/21Jimmy’s Jazz and Blues Club - PortsmouthRating: 5 out of 5

I can’t say enough about how wonderful the evening was! From the venue , food to the concert, all was perfection. I will be returning soon for the New Orleans style food and Kathy Mattea was thoroughly entertaining from her stories about her career to her music.

  • Good concert

Very enjoyable evening, Kathy Mattea was great. The venue was a perfect place for Kathy’s performance, nice place to connect to the audience.

  • Better and better

What a fun time. KM's voice is back! Really enjoyed the show like I knew I would.

  • Perfection!

by bmandrellfan on 1/22/19Fox Cities PAC - AppletonRating: 5 out of 5

Kathy Mattea puts on a live performance that can’t be matched. She combines music with stories and a touch of humor. Her voice is so pure, it sounds better in person than it does on her recordings. She is absolute perfection!!

  • Warm and welcoming

by Nrusho on 10/31/18Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

She was so real. I enjoyed every minute of the performance. Her voice is amazing. I cried during “Where Have You Been” and laughed during many stories. I would definitely go again.

  • Kathy Never Sounded Better!!

by MEugene on 11/23/17Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

It's been a while since I heard Kathy "in concert" but her sound, style and stage persona were never better. Went home afterwards and plugged a couple of Kathy's older CDs into my dash so I can relive the evening when I want..

  • The Inimitable Kathy Mattea

by Logano on 11/23/17Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

Been a huge fan, but first time I've seen her live. Loved all the songs she played, especially Goin' Gone! Bill Cooley is a virtuoso on the guitar. Sound quality was excellent. First time also for the Birchmere, but definitely not the last. The whole setup makes the concert experience exceptional.

  • Kathy Mattea is Great

by GrammyJudy on 11/22/17Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

We enjoyed the show very much. I went with two girlfriends (left the husbands home) to a girls night out and had a great time. Kathy has a beautiful voice and Bill was very talented also. We have seen her before at the Birchmere and Wolftrap and she never disappoints. After the show, she was very personable and spoke with each of her fans as long as they wanted. She is a gem - like another favorite, Suzy Bogguss. Thanks Birchmere for another great performance artist.

  • Excellent!

by MikeW27 on 3/19/17Halloran Centre at the Orpheum Theatre Memphis - MemphisRating: 5 out of 5

Kathy Mattea was excellent! This smaller setting really lent itself to storytelling and interaction with the audience. I have seen her a few times, and each show is better than the previous!

  • Old Fan

by BelaandAbbyfan on 5/24/16U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 4 out of 5

Pretty amazing performance by one of my old favorites. She works so hard on stage and seems to enjoy every minutes of it. Her guitarist Bill Cooley is something special, also. They obviously have spent a lot of time together over the years to get to where they play so effortlessly together. Glad to see Bill is teaching her some guitar licks. Older crowd. Not many under Social Security age. Hope she come back soon before all her old fans are gone.

Beautiful voice and talent. We had an amazing time and didn't want it to end.

  • Intimate jam session with Kathy Mattea & Bill Cool

by Ginko18 on 5/22/16U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome show. Played longer than expected. Good mix of classic hits and new album, which focuses on Kathy's roots in WV. Kathy also has a warm, funny and engaging personality, which was very unexpected. I can't wait until the next show; I'll be there.

  • by relax2 on 5/22/16U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 2 out of 5

Kathy Mattea Featuring Bill Cooley was disappointing for me. She kept saying that she liked not having the really talented band on stage for a change. She needed them. She sang dark gloomy songs about death & coal mines over & over. She talked about dead people over & over. Including her dead voice coach that had just passed away. She ask for song request & then did not sing them. I left feeling her show stressed & depressed.

  • Kathy Mattea w/ Bill Cooley

by Sususu on 5/22/16U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome acoustical show. Kathy is such a great performer and has such a warm, inviting stage presence. Bill Cooley is an incredible guitar player. All in all, a wonderful evening.

  • Entertaining and talented

I am not a fan of that style of music, but they were great musicians. Bill Cooley could really play guitar!

  • Best concert this year!

by JodSim on 5/22/16U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Best concert we've been to in years! Kathy is a delightful story teller (and very very funny!), an amazingly soulful singer, an enormously accomplished musician and she just keeps getting better and better, as she continues to study and work on her craft. She had us laughing and crying. It was like spending an evening in our living room, with an old friend. I will never miss an opportunity to see her again and again.
