K FLAY IN CONCERT:
Rising female rapper K Flay is not your everyday hip hop hopeful. The self-taught producer and songstress is a tomboy and a Stanford alum -- two things you don't see every day often among the reigning pack of racy female MCs -- and her music is just as unique thanks to her effortless ability to move from singing to rapping and back again. She built a devoted regional following in the mid-'00s with a series of self-released mixtapes, and in 2014 she took her sound to the masses with her debut album Life As A Dog. At her live shows K Flay approaches catchy tracks like "Make Me Fade" and "The Cops" with the ease and confidence fans have come to love from her recordings, delivering a laid-back and entirely original hip hop concert experience that blends the best of rap, rock, and electronic music.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
K Flay, aka Kristine Meredith Flaherty, was born in the bucolic Chicago suburb of Wilmette, Illinois, where she was raised by a musical family. After high school she moved to California to attend Stanford University, and during her freshman year there she experienced two life-altering events. The first was receiving news that her father -- a music lover and skilled guitarist -- had passed away unexpectedly. The second was the creation of her first rap track "Blingity Blang Blang", a parody song that she made to amuse her friends. The gag led to the realization that she liked writing music, and by year's end she had written several more songs as a tribute to her father. She taught herself to produce tracks on the computer and began performing live, and in her junior year she made her debut as K Flay with the mixtape Suburban Rap Queen. She followed up in 2009 with the Mashed Potatoes mixtape, and in 2010 she dropped the K Flay EP. Two more solid EPs and extensive regional touring followed in the early '10s, and in 2014 she made her official studio debut with the album Life As A Dog. The record peaked at No. 2 on the Heatseekers chart and No. 14 on the Rap chart, receiving praise from critics and earning her a national fanbase. Following the record's release K Flay proved herself the real deal with a string of self-assured performances on tour, leaving little doubt in fans' minds that she's got big things on the horizon.
She did an amazing job performing live. So good and so much fun
I’ve never heard of KFlay before this concert, but a friend invited me and she was so amazing to watch! She has so much energy, an amazing voice, and a powerful stage presence. I would highly recommend seeing her!
K Flay is a badass! I did not listen to her previously, only knew a couple songs. Took my wife and she rocked out! Excellent performance. We loved the experience.
Incredible show from start to finish!! Corook and Upsahl were amazing. And K.Flay was perfect. Such a fun night and a great experience. Highly recommend!
I have seen K. Flay live 5 times now and every single time has been amazing. This concert was EPIC!!
Wish I could have went ! Also missed cancellation at Danforth Last saw her in Mexico City too long!
K.Flay is such an incredible live performer and the way she energizes the crowd is a special experience to be a part of. At this show, Upsahl and Corook were openers and both were fantastic as well.
K. Flay is incredible! There’s no one like her. An awesome show all around.
I cried it was so much fun. I had an amazing time and everything felt really safe. I’m so glad I got to see my favorite singer. Hope she comes back soon💕
Everything was fantastic! G Flip could have been the headliner. She was off the charts talented and got the whole crowd going. She put on a top notch professional performance. I will follow her tour and career for sure!!
I was asked to take over a ticket from a friend who couldn’t use it and went without grey expectations, anticipating a series of “Blood in the Cut” knock-offs. Instead, it was a virtuoso performance in concept-album format with a storyline about anxiety, fears, the voice inside telling you not to [whatever], facing fears, putting them aside, forgiving oneself and our own self-limitations, rage, chaos, redemption and love told and performed by a confident artist willing to be strong and vulnerable and honest. I came because I said I would; I left as a fan. G-Flip was also a treat: exciting, energetic, jumping from guitar to drums mid-song. So cool. Unfortunately, the sound in her set seemed muddier, making it hard to follow her lyrics, which I would have wanted to catch since they seemed worth catching.
Best show I’ve been to in a long time! Amazing stage presence! K.Flay is extremely engaged and interactive with the crowd through the entire set. She truly leaves it all on the stage! I will definitely see her again!
A sonic therapy session with KFlay . Dynamic music , fantastic alternative hip hop beats with a wonderful personal connection to her audience. An honest and talented performer!
KFlay is an amazing performer and makes it a fun experience for everyone at the venue. Her openers corook and gflip were super fun and engaging with the audience also! KFlay makes it a point to connect her songs with stories between them to keep the flow of the show smooth and keeps the audience engaged by doing so. This allows us as the audience to really understand her fully as an artist and the points she’s trying to make. My only issue was with Big Night Live as they took my friend and I to the wrong room for our meet and greet.
Best night ever, I was literally living my best life. Me and my friend camped out and it was well worth it. I love K.Flay more than I love myself probably.
It was great, a good experience, everything were very smoothly and safe !!
She is an amazing performer. Her energy is contagious. It was such a blast. Can’t wait till next time I get to see her.
I’ll start with the bad. The show was advertised to start at 6:30, so I took my time getting to the theater so I could miss the opening act and not have to stand around for 4+ hours. The first of three acts didn’t come on until 7:30, so K Flay didn’t come on til 9:15ish, which was annoying especially in an all-standing venue. However, K Flay rocked the place, played a lot of new stuff and her old hits. You can tell she’s very passionate about her music which is good to see. Would definitely see her live again!
An incredible experience. KFlay offered a necessary catharsis. A primal scream of music. Don't miss a chance to see her
great venue, great price, great show!!! loved the experience!
