Julie Andrews on Tour
Julie Andrews is one of the most beloved actresses and singers of all time. She's also a children's book author, with 2010's The Very Fairy Princess hitting No. 1 on the New York Times best-seller list; a co-creator of the Netflix show Julie's Greenroom; and more recently an engaging live speaker. Although in the past she embarked on traditional concert tours, she now tends to hit the road as a storyteller. In 2019, Andrews supported her second autobiography, Home Work: A Memoir of My Hollywood Years, with dates during which she discussed her illustrious acting days.
About Julie Andrews
Born in 1935 in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, Julie Andrews was a vocal prodigy with a four-octave voice. Naturally, she started singing professionally as a child, as her mom and stepfather were also performers. Andrews famously sang the opera aria "Je suis Titania" at age 12 and performed for King George VI and Queen Elizabeth at age 13.
Andrews turned her attention to the stage and, specifically, Broadway, debuting there at age 18 and then landing the role of Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady. Television work followed, as did more stage musicals, although Andrews became a global superstar thanks to her film work. Most notably, she won the 1965 Academy Award for Best Actress and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical for portraying the whimsical Mary Poppins. She then portrayed plucky Maria von Trapp in the movie adaptation of The Sound of Music.
In the ensuing decades, Andrews worked steadily, alternating between film and TV roles, although she returned to Broadway for 1995's Victor/Victoria. She was introduced to a whole new generation of fans by portraying Queen Clarisse Renaldi in the Anne Hathaway hit The Princess Diaries and providing the voice of Queen Lillian in Shrek 2. Awards also poured in: In 2000, Queen Elizabeth II recognized her performing arts career by making Andrews a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire; the following year, Andrews received Kennedy Center Honors; and in 2011, she earned a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In a full-circle moment, she directed a production of My Fair Lady in 2016 at the Sydney Opera House.

The moderation was exceptional, and Julie Andrews was very interesting to listen to. The venue was gorgeous and the crowd was terrific.
This was a talk of Julie Andrews speaking on her memoirs from her new book Home Work. She was funny. The person asking the questions was good and it was very interesting. The only thing i would say is the legth of time of the talk given that it was quite an expensive ticket, seemed a little short.
Julie Andrews was graceful and wonderful as always. The woman interviewing her was a tad unprofessional at times and could have lead the talk in a more interesting direction. But with all her decades of experience, Julie Andrews made the most of it anyway and it was still an enjoyable evening. I also attended her event at Barnes & Noble at the Grove two days later, and found that the guy interviewing her there made the talk a lot more fun and interesting and went fearlessly with her whenever she'd go off on a tangent. I may be wrong, but it seemed like Julie was more comfortable with him than with the lady at the theatre and the banter between them was more genuine and fun to watch.
Would like to let the world know that attending this event to listen to Julie Andrews was Excellent! Right up there with attending the event featuring Carol Burnett. When I was on holiday in England, we dashed into a restaurant to avoid rain. Lo and behold, Julie Andrews was on the radio being interviewed. It was an awesome experience back in 1992. To attend this venue was another awesome experience listening to one of the most interesting person in the world. The seats and Orpheum Theatre were great!
Interview of Julie Andrews regarding Home Work, second volume of her autobiography. This one covers the Hollywood years. Many funny stories regarding early movies, co-workers. No wonder she and Carol Burnett are best chums!
Julie Andrews is a National Treasure! She is the Mary Poppins of my childhood and continues to enchant with her wit, storied life, and anecdotes. What a wonderful evening!!!
Julie and LA Times columnist discuss parts of her new book "Homework". I read it in a flash- For those interested in behind the scenes accounts of her most popular films, Mary Poppins and Sound of Music and lots of other personal anecdotes. Go get that book!
What a wonderful event! I didn’t want it to end! Julie Andrews is a beautiful person. She is real and funny! I could have listened to her for hours!
What can you say?? It’s Julie Andrews - a class act and what a lady! To hear her tell those stories was just beyond. If only more people could carry themselves as she does; what a world it would be!
I had a great time seeing Julie Andrews. She was charming and fun to listen to. However, I didn't realize we'd also be getting the book. I had ordered it and read it in advance so I could enjoy the night, however, the moderator really only asked her to tell stories from the book. While it was nice to hear them directly from Julie, I felt a little like the questions should have been better.
Julie is perfect in every way. 90 min. Wasn't enough. Excited to get her book with admission price. And the Orpheum Theater is just awesome.
Ms. Andrews was charming, lovely and elegant as expected. She was also bawdy, funny and just plain fun. Kudos to Mary McNamara as well.
Julie was warm, funny, gracious, and everything we hoped she’d be. The interviewer talked far too much: she inserted her own stories, talked over Julie, and told Julie’s stories rather than asking questions. It detracted enough that I took one star off the review, though Julie was practically perfect in every way!
Listening to Julie Andrews speak anywhere would be a treat, but what made this event extra special was Mary McNamara's intelligent and well-paced questioning. We were especially pleased that audience questions were curated backstage during the interview and handed to Mary, so no one asked inappropriate questions or made a boring statement.
It was a thrill to spend an evening with Dame Julie Andrews. I loved her stories about her Hollywood years, her most famous films, her marriage to Blake Edwards, and her friendship with Carol Burnett. I was delighted to be surprised by how funny, brassy, and bawdy she was. It truly was an incredible, unforgettable experience!
The Julie Andrews ”hits” we’re playing As people entered and some were singing along. The audience was packed with true fans. When Ms. Andrews entered the stage, the first standing ovation occurred. She commanded the audience’s attention from beginning to end. The Pulitzer Prize winning interviewer fan-girled every now and then even though she is accomplished in her own right. The evening went entirely too fast with anecdotes and stories shared not only about her amazing career but her LIFE and how she managed family and mind blowing fame and learning all of it as it came barreling towards her. As Ms Andrews exited the stage, the audience rose to their feet once again. She was and IS magnificent!
Julie Andrews is a marvel. We loved her in "Mary Poppins", "The Sound of Music" and dozens of films since. The evening started with a montage of clips, including photos from her early life and then snippets from her film roles. The newest generation loves her as the Queen in "The Princess Diaries" and the Queen/mother-in-law of "Shrek". She plays a royal wonderfully, and everyone in attendance felt that they were in the presence of film royalty. Great anecdotes from her book filled the too short interview with her - the time just flew by. Mary McNamera did a superb job moderating and providing Ms. Andrews the background to talk about this latest book. It was a great night!
