Julie Andrews on Tour
Julie Andrews is one of the most beloved actresses and singers of all time. She's also a children's book author, with 2010's The Very Fairy Princess hitting No. 1 on the New York Times best-seller list; a co-creator of the Netflix show Julie's Greenroom; and more recently an engaging live speaker. Although in the past she embarked on traditional concert tours, she now tends to hit the road as a storyteller. In 2019, Andrews supported her second autobiography, Home Work: A Memoir of My Hollywood Years, with dates during which she discussed her illustrious acting days.
About Julie Andrews
Born in 1935 in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, Julie Andrews was a vocal prodigy with a four-octave voice. Naturally, she started singing professionally as a child, as her mom and stepfather were also performers. Andrews famously sang the opera aria "Je suis Titania" at age 12 and performed for King George VI and Queen Elizabeth at age 13.
Andrews turned her attention to the stage and, specifically, Broadway, debuting there at age 18 and then landing the role of Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady. Television work followed, as did more stage musicals, although Andrews became a global superstar thanks to her film work. Most notably, she won the 1965 Academy Award for Best Actress and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical for portraying the whimsical Mary Poppins. She then portrayed plucky Maria von Trapp in the movie adaptation of The Sound of Music.
In the ensuing decades, Andrews worked steadily, alternating between film and TV roles, although she returned to Broadway for 1995's Victor/Victoria. She was introduced to a whole new generation of fans by portraying Queen Clarisse Renaldi in the Anne Hathaway hit The Princess Diaries and providing the voice of Queen Lillian in Shrek 2. Awards also poured in: In 2000, Queen Elizabeth II recognized her performing arts career by making Andrews a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire; the following year, Andrews received Kennedy Center Honors; and in 2011, she earned a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In a full-circle moment, she directed a production of My Fair Lady in 2016 at the Sydney Opera House.
