About

JONATHAN BUTLER IN CONCERT:

Singer-songwriter Jonathan Butler became an apartheid hero in the ‘70s when his teenage debut single became the first song by a black artist to receive airplay on white radio stations in his native South Africa. Nearly 40 years later, he remains an enduring icon of positive social change through music, gracing audiences with his uplifting voice on inspiring performances of his early South African music and later classics like “Lies.” At his 2013 dates, Butler was joined on stage by his daughter, whose continued presence on tour as a backing singer ensures more spiritually satisfying shows in 2014.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in apartheid-era Cape Town, the precocious young Butler showed musical promise from an early age, beginning to tour at just age seven before going on to achieve success as a teen recording idol. After a stint with South African jazz-rock legends Pacific Express, Butler signed to Jive records, relocating to the UK to continue writing and recording. He achieved his biggest international success in 1987 with “Lies,” a Grammy-nominated hit that landed at No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100. Over the course of his decade-spanning career, Butler has released more than 20 albums, exploring a broad range of styles including jazz, pop, and gospel. Following the release of a Christmas album in 2013, Butler is once again the road for a string of highly anticipated North American dates.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

“Jonathan Butler feels every note he plays and sings, this was quite an evening with great music.”

“Musician, singer, songwriter Jonathan Butler provides a solid evening of entertainment featuring songs he has written, many made famous by other stars, but superbly covered by this great artist. His musicianship is stellar and his voice always a delight.”

“If Jonathan Butler ever comes close to your location, you must go. These days his daughter, Jody Butler, is performing with him. She's an unexpected treat.”

by BuffaloSouljah on 8/18/21Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

The Jonathan Butler concert was awesome! The Birchmere waiters were excellent, I didn’t have to wait long for food or my drinks. This concert made me forget about how much the world has changed since Covid-19. It was nice to momentarily escape from reality and be transported to a peaceful, joyful, mellow environment. Thanks Birchmere for the wonderful venue!

  • Concert Sound was amazing

by It's not Jonathan It's The Birchmere on 8/18/21Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 3 out of 5

I had a problem with the setting with COVID-19 It was just to close and a lot of people was not wearing there mask. It was very tight and not enough room to move around at your table. Other than that Jonathan Butler was Amazing.

  • Disappointed

by Derrick on 8/18/21Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 2 out of 5

I have love Jonathan Butler for years and found him very talented; however, Sunday nights performance was filled with songs by other artist and too much Jazz included. He didn't sing enough and only sung a 2 or 3 short version of older songs. I left the concert and played some of his old stuff on my way home. Very much Disappointed!

  • Exceptionally fantastic!

by Coco on 8/18/21Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

I have always been a Jonathan Butler fan. Every time I see him it’s just as good or it better than the last time and it’s never enough. This man is so gifted and he is musical talent is a gift to the world of us that love his music. He’s an activist, a lil funny and he loves Jesus. What more can you ask for in a performance. I loved it and praying he comes again very soon.

  • An Awesome Evening of Soulful Jazz

by Tshay on 10/7/19Charline McCombs Empire Theatre - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

I have attended 3 of 4 of the jazz series events so far and each has had its own unique touch. Jonathan Butler, Jeff Lorber, Eric Darius, Steve Cole, Jeff Kashua are all masters at their craft. You can tell that they truly enjoy what they do and that translates to a wonderful evening of soulful jazz. I have truly enjoyed this series and am so excited about the last two artists (Nick Colionne and Paul Taylor). The venue has been cozy and perfect for these events. I will definitely purchase season tickets for this event if offered in the future!

Excellent concert, extended performances was like getting two concerts for the price of one. Parking was challenging but that was the only inconvenience. Loved it!!!

  • Oh my, Heavenly.

by Miss C on 9/24/19Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre - MabletonRating: 5 out of 5

Mable House is always a good place for a concert. The seats are a reasonable price and you don't have to pay a lot of extras. But the Jonathon Butler concert was amazing above all my expectations and previous concerts. I never even expected Eric Darius and Nick Collione not Kirk Whalum. I bought tickets based on Butler alone. But what a treat. The entertainment was first class, every act started on time, run like a well oiled machine. Vendors were great too. Very well done. I will be back Saturday for Marsha Ambrosius.

  • Great Experience

by MamaM on 9/24/19Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre - MabletonRating: 4 out of 5

First time at Mable House Amphitheater. Did not know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. Event started on time and everything ran smoothly. The parking situation was a bit hectic so we opted to park outside to avoid the crowds but it was orderly and there was traffic police directing traffic. The venue was nice and the chairs had ample room to move around and not too tight. Love that you can bring your own food and drink. The concert was great and the artists engaged the audience and even came out to the floor. Overall great way to celebrate my birthday I would recommend this place and I plan to go back next summer.
