About

JONATHAN BUTLER IN CONCERT:

Singer-songwriter Jonathan Butler became an apartheid hero in the ‘70s when his teenage debut single became the first song by a black artist to receive airplay on white radio stations in his native South Africa. Nearly 40 years later, he remains an enduring icon of positive social change through music, gracing audiences with his uplifting voice on inspiring performances of his early South African music and later classics like “Lies.” At his 2013 dates, Butler was joined on stage by his daughter, whose continued presence on tour as a backing singer ensures more spiritually satisfying shows in 2014.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in apartheid-era Cape Town, the precocious young Butler showed musical promise from an early age, beginning to tour at just age seven before going on to achieve success as a teen recording idol. After a stint with South African jazz-rock legends Pacific Express, Butler signed to Jive records, relocating to the UK to continue writing and recording. He achieved his biggest international success in 1987 with “Lies,” a Grammy-nominated hit that landed at No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100. Over the course of his decade-spanning career, Butler has released more than 20 albums, exploring a broad range of styles including jazz, pop, and gospel. Following the release of a Christmas album in 2013, Butler is once again the road for a string of highly anticipated North American dates.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

“Jonathan Butler feels every note he plays and sings, this was quite an evening with great music.”

“Musician, singer, songwriter Jonathan Butler provides a solid evening of entertainment featuring songs he has written, many made famous by other stars, but superbly covered by this great artist. His musicianship is stellar and his voice always a delight.”

“If Jonathan Butler ever comes close to your location, you must go. These days his daughter, Jody Butler, is performing with him. She's an unexpected treat.”

  • Great show

    by K. C. on 9/24/19Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre - MabletonRating: 4 out of 5

The show was great. Butler's acoustic guitar was non-operational so he disappeared for awhile trying unsuccessfully to get it fixed. Kirk Whalum, being the consummate professional and headliner that he is, more than carried the show until Mr. Butler returned.

by l. on 9/24/19Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre - MabletonRating: 3 out of 5

Eric Darius n Kirk Whalum. Jonathan Butler was disappointing. Butler was way too churchy n preachy...n a bit forceful with it. After being churchy he cursed n tried to hard sell his cds. Butler didnt sing any of my favorite songs. I had to listen to my Butler cd to get my favorite songs experience...not cool

  • Johnathan Butler, I needed a few more songs

    by B. N. on 9/24/19Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre - MabletonRating: 4 out of 5

I was a little disapointed that Johnathan Butler only sung 2 solo songs and he was the reason I went to this concert.

  • Great show but a little disappointing

by MJ on 9/24/19Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre - MabletonRating: 4 out of 5

This was our 1st time seeing Jonathan Butler.. Unfortunately, he did not sing any/many of his songs. Eric and Nick were great!

  • Disappointed

    by T.O. on 9/23/19Rating: 3 out of 5

I am a huge fan of Jonathan Butler and was so disappointed by his performance. The guys who played before he did came to give a concert. But Jonathan did not really sing his songs and it was very disappointing.

  • I LOVE Jonathan Butler

    by Faye G on 8/5/19Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

I first attended a JB concert in 1987 when he was on tour with Whitney Houston and I have loved his music ever since. His voice is still as solid and beautiful as it was over 30 years ago! And I got to since for him! He is my all time favorite artist. It was my husband's first time seeing and hearing him. Now he is a big fan! Tell Jonathan to come back anytime! My husband and me will be there with bells on!

  • Enjoyed the show

by Kim on 6/16/19The Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

I really enjoyed the show everything just came together

  • Good show.

by Motormouse. on 6/15/19The Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre - DetroitRating: 3 out of 5

Nice show. Kirk is a really smooth sax player and Butler is an accomplished guitarist. But Butler always gets preachy at the end of his shows and it slows things down and gets boring. I think it's his style.

  • Fantastic Jazz Night!

by Knee C on 6/15/19The Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

Excellent performance together! Jonathan Butler & Kirk Wahlum delivered a great treat.

  • Show was great sound was not good.

by Wiz on 6/15/19The Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

Sound for several shows at Chene Park every year is not good on 75% of all of the concerts I have gone to in the last 5years. It has continued with the Aretha Franklin and as musician and former sound man this is not a good look at all for a top notch venue with top notch artists.

  • As always Jonathan Butler delivered and did not disappoint!

by Yolanda on 6/15/19The Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

There were a slight sound issue that was corrected but nonetheless both my friend and I truly enjoyed the performances! I’m never disappointed at the Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre! I’m looking forward to purchasing tickets for another event!! Two thumbs up!!!

Good show it could’ve been just a little bit longer maybe 20 or 30 more minutes

  • Awesome Show

    by rtbradford1 on 6/1/19Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

Although I've been a fan for years...this was my first, but not last, Jonathan Butler show. It was everything my father and brother said it would be and more. Truth be told, I even shed a tear. Mr. Butler is a master musician and you could feel his passion in every note. It was beautiful and I can't wait to see another one of his amazing shows. Thank you, Jonathan Butler!!

The show was great. Jonathan Butler is phenomenal. Fully engaging audience from the moment he walked out. True showmanship. Mr Butler makes you part of the performance.

  • One of the best performers of our time

    by CJ8288 on 5/23/19Harrison Opera House - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

Beautiful venue, and FABULOUS performance by one of the great jazz artists of our time. Jonathan has a beautiful voice, is a phenomenal guitar player, and is an incredibly energetic performer. He interacts with his audience and has a sparkling wit that makes the atmosphere warm and comfortable. Seeing him was on my bucket list, and I was SO captivated that I’m searching for his future performance schedule so I can see him in concert again!
