About

JONATHAN BUTLER IN CONCERT:

Singer-songwriter Jonathan Butler became an apartheid hero in the ‘70s when his teenage debut single became the first song by a black artist to receive airplay on white radio stations in his native South Africa. Nearly 40 years later, he remains an enduring icon of positive social change through music, gracing audiences with his uplifting voice on inspiring performances of his early South African music and later classics like “Lies.” At his 2013 dates, Butler was joined on stage by his daughter, whose continued presence on tour as a backing singer ensures more spiritually satisfying shows in 2014.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in apartheid-era Cape Town, the precocious young Butler showed musical promise from an early age, beginning to tour at just age seven before going on to achieve success as a teen recording idol. After a stint with South African jazz-rock legends Pacific Express, Butler signed to Jive records, relocating to the UK to continue writing and recording. He achieved his biggest international success in 1987 with “Lies,” a Grammy-nominated hit that landed at No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100. Over the course of his decade-spanning career, Butler has released more than 20 albums, exploring a broad range of styles including jazz, pop, and gospel. Following the release of a Christmas album in 2013, Butler is once again the road for a string of highly anticipated North American dates.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

“Jonathan Butler feels every note he plays and sings, this was quite an evening with great music.”

“Musician, singer, songwriter Jonathan Butler provides a solid evening of entertainment featuring songs he has written, many made famous by other stars, but superbly covered by this great artist. His musicianship is stellar and his voice always a delight.”

“If Jonathan Butler ever comes close to your location, you must go. These days his daughter, Jody Butler, is performing with him. She's an unexpected treat.”

  • Great Performances! Ticket Master Must Improve

by Dimples on 8/23/22Rivers Casino Philadelphia - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

The ticket retrieval after purchasing tickets is convoluted. A number of people had trouble entering the show after purchasing tickets from the app. The older process was much easier.

  • A little disappointing

by Oneofakind on 8/23/22Rivers Casino Philadelphia - PhiladelphiaRating: 3 out of 5

A little disappointing due to the fact that the venue did not have the large screens on either side of the stage projecting the concert at the same time. The couple in front of me sat with their heads touching almost the whole time so I could barely see what was going on on the stage. However, as soon as the concert ended, advertisements appeared on the screens so I know they were working. I did do another concert in March there and the screens were being utilized.

Started on time. Staff was very professional. It is great to come to an establishment with free parking.

  • Rivers Casino Jazz Concert

by David South Philly on 8/23/22Rivers Casino Philadelphia - PhiladelphiaRating: 3 out of 5

Gearld Albright was great and the sound was wonderful. Well Jonathan Bultler was so so, his performance was rushed and didn't do anything for me. I would only see him again if his show was free!

  • Artist lost his luggage and instrument,

The promoter should have had the house band play with him.

Both Jonathan Butler and Gerald Albright were excellent. This was my first concert at Rivers. We thought the venue was just large enough to feel a part of the show. We will see another show there soon.

  • Did more singing than guitar playing!

  • Magnificent

I have been a fan of Jonathan Butler for decades. I was pleasantly surprised when he made an appearance at the Cap Jazz Fest (2021). I checked his schedule in early August and discovered that he was scheduled to perform in Philly. We live in Baltimore but there was no way that I was going to miss this concert if he was coming this close to my home. Was it worth the traffic jams and $300+ a night hotel? Absolutely and I would not hesitate to do it again. The concert was absolutely wonderful. Jonathan is a musical genius. He took us on a musical rollercoaster and I was there for every crest and drop. He drew the audience into his musical journey and we could not get enough. Gerald Albright was exceptional as well. I chose to surprise my husband and did not tell him that Gerald was also in concert. Gerald seranaded the audience with his sax in a manner that few musicians have been able to master. What a superb concert. If you have the opportunity to see either of these two in concert don't miss it. Jonathan, please come back to the Baltimore, DC area!

  • JAZZ !!!

Jonathan Butler held church and then some singing, playing guitar!! Gerald Albright played “Bermuda Nights” and all was right with my world 🎶

  • Outstanding!

Jonathan Butler was amazing - guitar and vocals; what a talent! From his roots in S. Africa to a bit of praise and worship, I loved every minute.

  • Fantastic!

  • Louisville Jazz Festival

by KRT on 8/23/22Iroquois Amphitheater - LouisvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Jonathan Butler, Gerald Albright and Damien Escobar brought an amazing array of talent to Friday night. Jonathan Butler did a scaled down set with His Keyboard Player that was powerful and beautiful. Gerald Allbright brought all the mature swagger of an accomplished Jazz professional to a swinging, soulful set that spanned his work since debuting in 1987. The Young Gun, Damien Escobar brought an innovative set with His Keyboard and Drum Players while he played the electric violin. He is a unique talent with a bright future.

  • Jazzerrific

by PT on 8/22/22Iroquois Amphitheater - LouisvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Best concert that I have ever attendant. I had never seen a black violinist. You start the concert with a guitar player followed by a saxophonist and end the night with a violinist. That Makes A Great Show!

  • Louisville JazzFest

by RhonRhon on 8/22/22Iroquois Amphitheater - LouisvilleRating: 4 out of 5

Overall I enjoyed the jazzy event! Each artist was on point! There was food and beverage available for purchase. Seating wasn’t too uncomfortable! Of course up front and personal is always better - a venue like Louisville Palace…or smaller.

  • Good time

by No nickname on 8/13/22Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre - MabletonRating: 4 out of 5

Great concert. The music was awesome but after talking to fellow tickets holder in the lawn I felt my tickets were overpriced by $40 each. Anyway we had a good time.

  • J Butler

by Beverly on 8/10/22Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre - MabletonRating: 4 out of 5

Due to the weather the show was interrupted. We had to move and take cover (lawn seats). Which made our artist have to keep it moving in order to get in what he did before the storm continued. We enjoyed what we got but it was a let down ☹️

  • Too Much Time

by Dancer on 8/9/22Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre - MabletonRating: 4 out of 5

I hadn’t seen Jonathan Butler, Najee nor Ken Ford in ages. I was very pleased with the time that Najee and Ken had to perform. My disappointment came when the gentleman took too much time talking about his life’s teachings and his daughter working for a well known senator. That precious time could have been give to Jonathan. He was who we paid to see. Time was already sketchy due to the storm that was brewing. Jonathan’s performance felt rushed. The venue itself is very nice. The sound system was fantastic.
