About

JONATHAN BUTLER IN CONCERT:

Singer-songwriter Jonathan Butler became an apartheid hero in the ‘70s when his teenage debut single became the first song by a black artist to receive airplay on white radio stations in his native South Africa. Nearly 40 years later, he remains an enduring icon of positive social change through music, gracing audiences with his uplifting voice on inspiring performances of his early South African music and later classics like “Lies.” At his 2013 dates, Butler was joined on stage by his daughter, whose continued presence on tour as a backing singer ensures more spiritually satisfying shows in 2014.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in apartheid-era Cape Town, the precocious young Butler showed musical promise from an early age, beginning to tour at just age seven before going on to achieve success as a teen recording idol. After a stint with South African jazz-rock legends Pacific Express, Butler signed to Jive records, relocating to the UK to continue writing and recording. He achieved his biggest international success in 1987 with “Lies,” a Grammy-nominated hit that landed at No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100. Over the course of his decade-spanning career, Butler has released more than 20 albums, exploring a broad range of styles including jazz, pop, and gospel. Following the release of a Christmas album in 2013, Butler is once again the road for a string of highly anticipated North American dates.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

“Jonathan Butler feels every note he plays and sings, this was quite an evening with great music.”

“Musician, singer, songwriter Jonathan Butler provides a solid evening of entertainment featuring songs he has written, many made famous by other stars, but superbly covered by this great artist. His musicianship is stellar and his voice always a delight.”

“If Jonathan Butler ever comes close to your location, you must go. These days his daughter, Jody Butler, is performing with him. She's an unexpected treat.”

Excellent show! The musicians supporting Jonathan were also superb. He reminded me that most American music from the Blues, R & B, Rock & Roll, Smooth Jazz, main stream Jazz, all have their roots in Africa.

  • AWSOME SHOW

  • Jonathan Butler

by Terriboys on 9/21/22The Factory - ChesterfieldRating: 5 out of 5

I really enjoyed Jonathan Butler. However, i felt he should of been right after the gospel hour. He was placed last after two high energy performances. I feel the last performance should of been Eric Darius are Rick Braun/ Richard Elliott. Jonathan is more toned down performance and i love to hear him sing. People were leaving at some point during his performance.

  • Great Venue

by DB on 9/21/22The Factory - ChesterfieldRating: 5 out of 5

The Factory was the perfect venue for the Smooth Jazz on Land concert. Also, I loved the convenience of my electronic tickets and the fact I was able to trasfer a ticket to my husband.

I was a little disappointed, not the performance I expected. It was more engaging on the cruise ship.

  • Can't Get Enough

by BeJae on 9/21/22The Factory - ChesterfieldRating: 5 out of 5

My husband & I have enjoyed Jonathan Butler for over 30 years. From the Temecula Winery, Friendly Temple Church, The Pageant and now the Jazz Cruise on Land at the Factory! If Jonathan Butler is on the lineup....we'll be there!

  • Hard a good time.

by LH on 9/21/22The Factory - ChesterfieldRating: 3 out of 5

I think he should have been part of the Gospel Hour at the beginning of the Program. Then followed by Eric Darius, and R&R Rick Braun and Richard Elliott. Overall, I had a good time.

  • Thankful

by DJ on 8/24/22Rivers Casino Philadelphia - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

Bless the Lord! Mr. Butler brought glory to God here in Philadelphia. A humbling moment amongst the crowd as Mr. Butler reminded the audience who and what it was all about. His humbleness through his personal storytelling drew the audience in as he praise the Lord through his melodic sounds. Praise the Lord forever more!

  • Great performance

by Ron on 8/24/22Iroquois Amphitheater - LouisvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Considering having his luggage and instruments vanish Jonathan Butler showed everyone real professionalism, after all the show must go on.

  • Amazing Music & Venue

  • Interesting

by ANJONZE on 8/23/22Rivers Casino Philadelphia - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

Because it was my first time at a show in one of the Philadelphia casinos, I really didn’t know what to expect. However, parking was great (free parking). I did not like the seating at all!! I am 5’1” and I thought the seats we chose were elevated seats, but that was not the case at all. I didn’t understand why they didn’t make use of the big screens that they had!?!?!? As far as the concert… it was nice overall! But Iam a huge JB fan and thought he was going to do a different set of songs(so I was a little disappointed) Gerald Albright was good!! Would love to attend a Jazz festival, but not in that type of room!!!

  • Albright and Butler

by Carla W on 8/23/22Rivers Casino Philadelphia - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome concert! Saw Jonathan Butler when his first album came out in 88 while promoting his More than Friends album. Jonathan did not disappoint then and the same for now… enjoyed every minute! Gerald Albright jammed like no other! Plain and simple both artists were off the hook!

  • Awesome show!

  • Louisville Jazz Festival

    by Carol W on 8/23/22Iroquois Amphitheater - LouisvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Jonathan Butler's set during the Louisville Jazz Festival was awesome. The only problem was that he was not scheduled to perform both days. I thoroughly enjoyed his performance.
