About

JONATHAN BUTLER IN CONCERT:

Singer-songwriter Jonathan Butler became an apartheid hero in the ‘70s when his teenage debut single became the first song by a black artist to receive airplay on white radio stations in his native South Africa. Nearly 40 years later, he remains an enduring icon of positive social change through music, gracing audiences with his uplifting voice on inspiring performances of his early South African music and later classics like “Lies.” At his 2013 dates, Butler was joined on stage by his daughter, whose continued presence on tour as a backing singer ensures more spiritually satisfying shows in 2014.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in apartheid-era Cape Town, the precocious young Butler showed musical promise from an early age, beginning to tour at just age seven before going on to achieve success as a teen recording idol. After a stint with South African jazz-rock legends Pacific Express, Butler signed to Jive records, relocating to the UK to continue writing and recording. He achieved his biggest international success in 1987 with “Lies,” a Grammy-nominated hit that landed at No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100. Over the course of his decade-spanning career, Butler has released more than 20 albums, exploring a broad range of styles including jazz, pop, and gospel. Following the release of a Christmas album in 2013, Butler is once again the road for a string of highly anticipated North American dates.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

“Jonathan Butler feels every note he plays and sings, this was quite an evening with great music.”

“Musician, singer, songwriter Jonathan Butler provides a solid evening of entertainment featuring songs he has written, many made famous by other stars, but superbly covered by this great artist. His musicianship is stellar and his voice always a delight.”

“If Jonathan Butler ever comes close to your location, you must go. These days his daughter, Jody Butler, is performing with him. She's an unexpected treat.”

  • Summer Night Jazz Festival

I was pleased with the performances of the music played and songs sang. However, I was so disappointed that Rachelle and Jonathan did not perform the songs that I always wait to hear them sing in concert. Rachelle "with open arms" and Jonathan anything really. He didn't sing much. I love the gospel and participated when he sang. I just wish that he had sung more of his jazz songs for this particular evening.

I'm so excited that SW ATL has a venue where we can come and not have to drive to some of the other well known amphitheatres as we did in the past. I was glad that all of the artist were well known and it was worth a night out with great food, and friends. I wish Rachelle Ferrell had been the headliner or the last act so that she would have just been free to go a little longer. She was probably the more start performer with a unique nack for her style. The others like Michael Franks and Johnathan Butler, I loved them both but wanted to hear more of just them singing, not people like their acts that came w/ them. There were so many well known songs from both, so we pay to see the artist that we know not to see the additional acts that come w/ them. That was especially true w/ Johnathan Butler. He has so many well known songs that I didn't want to see Madesa. I loved the Sax player, but I wanted Johnathan more. Overall very good show, great venue. We need more vendors which would be awesome and tell them not to charge or up their prices because this is a concert and they feel they can overprize their food, keep it reasonable still. 6 wings, 6 buckets ok come on. All in all, I'd come back again. The lawn was so well manicured and the best seats in the house.

  • Bad Experience!!!

by JazzLover2012 on 8/6/12Wolf Creek Amphitheater - College ParkRating: 1 out of 5

It was our 5th year wedding anniversary and the concert was to top off the day. Our experience at the concert was not one that we want to remember. The headliners only played for 40 minutes..two songs each. The parking is another story. Great seats, the DJ was better than the artists.

  • I danced til' my knees hurt!!

The old school party with the DJ between sets was sooooo good it was almost better than the concert I would go again just for that.....butttttt the parking with those vans those vans those vans get there early enough to park in the closest parking lot not the secondary they didn't have enough vans so the line was long its not a fun way to end the night it was a real buzz killer!! but would I go again heck yeah!!!

  • Summer Night Jazz Fest

by LPopp on 8/6/12Wolf Creek Amphitheater - College ParkRating: 3 out of 5

My Review about the show, I had a problem with the flow and time of the show. I think the main artist should have began @ 7:00pm. It seems the first act time was limited, and the second act was late, so the audience listen and dance to old skool funk for the next hour. The last three artist performed together and appeared to be a little rushed. By the time the show ended 30% of the audience had already gone home. I hope the next time there is a show with such great artist, the timing and flow will go much better.

  • Perfect Summer Jazz

by Kbace on 8/6/12Wolf Creek Amphitheater - College ParkRating: 4 out of 5

The artists were fantastic! Rachelle Ferrell and Michael Franks were excellent with their individual sets - just magical. Maysa, Jonathan Butler, and Warren Hill had a combined set that was nice. They took turns performing their individual hits, but I was hoping that each one would've had their own individual set. Overall, the weather was nice, the place was packed and relaxed. The only glitch was that it took too long to breakdown and setup between acts. There was a DJ from URBAN SOUL there to keep the crowd dancing during the breaks.

by NaradaKB on 8/6/12Wolf Creek Amphitheater - College ParkRating: 1 out of 5

The time between the artists preforming was far to long. I paid good money for my seats and I spent more time listening to the DJ than the artists...

  • Amazing!!

by T3Scott on 8/6/12Wolf Creek Amphitheater - College ParkRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome venue!! The sound engineers did a terrific job. The artists were phenomenal in their own right and the sound coming off the stage was impeccable. I would definitely recommend keeping this as a go to amphitheater.

by TheCook on 8/6/12Wolf Creek Amphitheater - College ParkRating: 5 out of 5

Now I see why Jonathan Butler is a headliner, he takes time out to praise the Lord. Rachell Farrell was outstanding as her voice is a musical instument. The local guests were a pleasant and amazing suprise. As I heard several say upon exisiting, you deffinitely got your monies worth and more. The evening was wonderful!

Sadly, I was quite disappointed with the festival overall. While the venue is nice, the organization of the festival was not well organized with regard to time. The initial opening act was too long and the set up time in between artists was absolutely ridiculous. Yes, the DJ was great, but I did not pay to hear the DJ play an hours worth of music from one artist to the next. Thus, the time spent between the opening act and the excess set up time was a complete waste. The 5+ hours spent at the venue could have been reduced dramatically given a great producer and organizer of the event. I heard more old school music played by the DJ than the artists that I paid to see. Hopefully that will improve.

  • Michael Franks is the MAN

by awilliams949 on 8/6/12Wolf Creek Amphitheater - College ParkRating: 4 out of 5

Concert was great - The parking at Wolf Creek Amp. has to improve. Having to park in a field and be bused into the amphitheater has to change. The venue itself is a beautiful place and a great setting, but the parking situation has to improve.

  • Loved Jonathan Butler, Michael Franks & the gang!

by disndat50 on 8/6/12Wolf Creek Amphitheater - College ParkRating: 5 out of 5

It was a warm balmy night out on the grass and a few rain drops tried to sneak in, but the overall experience was wonderful! There was a pretty long delay between one of the acts but it was all good. I would sit in a seat the next time. The grass area was too far back to see the stage.

  • Summer Night Jazz Fest review

by BigAl2012 on 8/6/12Wolf Creek Amphitheater - College ParkRating: 3 out of 5

The over all volume wasn't very loud. Video screens would be nice addition for us on the lawn. You were showing some video image stage left that was upside down and totally useless. It has potential if you upgrade the concert experience.

Came to see Michael Franks but was blown away by Rachelle Farrell. Great concert great venue.
