About

JONATHAN BUTLER IN CONCERT:

Singer-songwriter Jonathan Butler became an apartheid hero in the ‘70s when his teenage debut single became the first song by a black artist to receive airplay on white radio stations in his native South Africa. Nearly 40 years later, he remains an enduring icon of positive social change through music, gracing audiences with his uplifting voice on inspiring performances of his early South African music and later classics like “Lies.” At his 2013 dates, Butler was joined on stage by his daughter, whose continued presence on tour as a backing singer ensures more spiritually satisfying shows in 2014.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in apartheid-era Cape Town, the precocious young Butler showed musical promise from an early age, beginning to tour at just age seven before going on to achieve success as a teen recording idol. After a stint with South African jazz-rock legends Pacific Express, Butler signed to Jive records, relocating to the UK to continue writing and recording. He achieved his biggest international success in 1987 with “Lies,” a Grammy-nominated hit that landed at No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100. Over the course of his decade-spanning career, Butler has released more than 20 albums, exploring a broad range of styles including jazz, pop, and gospel. Following the release of a Christmas album in 2013, Butler is once again the road for a string of highly anticipated North American dates.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

“Jonathan Butler feels every note he plays and sings, this was quite an evening with great music.”

“Musician, singer, songwriter Jonathan Butler provides a solid evening of entertainment featuring songs he has written, many made famous by other stars, but superbly covered by this great artist. His musicianship is stellar and his voice always a delight.”

“If Jonathan Butler ever comes close to your location, you must go. These days his daughter, Jody Butler, is performing with him. She's an unexpected treat.”

My wife and I had a great time at this event!! Jonathan Butler is amazing and so was all of the other entertainers. I would definitely recommend seeing him again.

  • The entire concert was awesome!

The artists, the sound system and the venue was outstanding.

  • Long show, sound could be better, but a nice eve.

by Qued on 8/10/12Wolf Creek Amphitheater - College ParkRating: 3 out of 5

Nice couple thing to since Wolf Creek now is championing "bring your own food and beverage!" Spent the evening talking on the lawn; the sound could have been better. I had a hard time hearing Rochelle Ferrell. Michael Franks was good, still would have loved a louder mic. Show started just after 7 and went on till almost midnight.

  • Great event!

The performances and venue were perfect. Parking was horrible.

  • Great Artist, Nice Venue, Slow Set up Crew

by DebGowans on 8/7/12Wolf Creek Amphitheater - College ParkRating: 4 out of 5

This was my first time at this venue. There was not a bad seat in the house regardless of table, seat or lawn. The artist were great! Michael Franks was the main attraction for me and he was amazing. The only issue was that he was on for 20 minutes. The time between artist was ridiculous. It was an hour at the least between Rachel Farrell and Michael Franks, then another 45 between the next set. TOOO SLOW!!!!! I didn't pay all that money to listen to a DJ and watch people moving around on stage.

  • Summer Nights Jazz Festival

by Creekfan on 8/7/12Wolf Creek Amphitheater - College ParkRating: 5 out of 5

All of the artists were exceptional. I enjoyed Rachelle Ferrell, Michal Franks, Johnathan Butler, Maysa and Warren Hill. The warm-up, Olds was also good. The venue was great, easy access. They do need a better ticket scanning method so people don't have to wait so long in line to get in.

  • The event was magical!!!! A must for any real jazz

by MRQB on 8/7/12Wolf Creek Amphitheater - College ParkRating: 5 out of 5

That was my 1st time going to the Wolf Creek Amphitheater. It was a really impressive venue.Very clean and well organized!! After going to Chastain for so many years,It was refreshing to go to the southside and experience such a nice event.Traffic flow was o.k,parking was o.k,drink prices were o.k also.I'm looking forward to going to the next event there!!!

  • Summer Nights Jazz Festival was "on point!"

by 12wonder on 8/7/12Wolf Creek Amphitheater - College ParkRating: 5 out of 5

Summer Nights Jazz Festival was "on point!" Rachelle Ferrell and Michael Franks did their "thang" and the MC and DJ keep the night alive in between acts with the "ole school music!" This was my first time at Wolf Creek and I must say I was very impressed...I will come back!! Thanks for an awesome night!!!

  • Great seeing Micheal Franks

by Pallens on 8/7/12Wolf Creek Amphitheater - College ParkRating: 4 out of 5

As much as I enjoyed the show and we loved hearing the old school music in between,it was too much wasted time after the muscians were already set up. Was this suppose to stretch the concert? Lets cut the wait time down, there's life after concerts .

  • Jazz festival was a night to remember!

by AyJaye on 8/7/12Wolf Creek Amphitheater - College ParkRating: 5 out of 5

I took my father there for his 60th birthday because he loves jazz music. Boy did we have a time. From the 1st act to the main event, it was spectacular. The concert goers were ready to dance and sing along at a drop of a dime. It was absolutley wonderful!

  • Summer Nights Jazz Festival @ Wolf Creek in ATL

by TWM76 on 8/6/12Wolf Creek Amphitheater - College ParkRating: 4 out of 5

This was my first time visiting the venue, Wolf Creek Amphitheater, and I was superbly pleased. The seating is spacious, and the lawn area is massive -much moreso than Chastain Park. I had second row seating and was able to sit next to the person next to me without bumping elbows (and you know outside seating in Atlanta can make one sticky :). Now on to the concert. Let's face it, while I enjoy live jazz, I was there to see JONATHAN BUTLER. Jonathan was advertised as the Top biller; however, I was a bit disappointed that his set was the shortest of them all. I didn't mind he shared that stage with Maysa (who's awesome); but Maysa and Warren Hill had waaay more performance time. Jonathan only performed 2 songs from his albums, and a duet with Maysa. Sure he played on a song with Warren, but he was not the feature. Rachelle Ferrell was superb and performed a minimum 30 mins. Michael Franks had another :30; but Jonathan sang about :10-:15 mins. The man is amazing, and I've seen him acquire new fans at his live shows; however, I don't think his time on stage allowed him to showcase his music to the fullest.

  • Not quite what I expected!!

by diva9802 on 8/6/12Wolf Creek Amphitheater - College ParkRating: 3 out of 5

Rachelle Ferell was more like an opening act!! She did not sing any of my favs from her. Her time on stage was way too short. JOhnathan Butler, Maysa, and Warren Hill were interchanging sets so you did not really get a whole from either act. Johnathan Butler hardly sang anything!! I was very disappointed. Rene Miller was on stage waaayyy too much, we did not pay to see her. Way too much intermission with the DJ playing the samn songs over and over and over again!! The only thing that saved the night was the breeze that God almighty graced upon us and also Wolfcreek Amphitheater wasnt too bad. The lighting was really nice and the grass is soft to the touch :)

Excellent!!! All of the performers was good, The sound & location was the best.

  • Good, but...

by ChiSistah on 8/6/12Wolf Creek Amphitheater - College ParkRating: 3 out of 5

Although the concert offered much music for the ticket price, the flow of the concert was erratic and lengthy. In addition to the artists featured, there were additional 'pre-opening' up and coming acts. By the time that the main artist billed (Jonathan Butler), came on stage, he shared the stage with Maysa and Warren Hill in a 'tag team' format. The 'tag team' performed other artists' songs moreso than their own. Therefore, Jonathan really didn't provide a full set as the previous acts, Rachelle Ferrell and Michael Franks, had provided. In fact, Rachelle Ferrell's set was far too long, in my opinion. So, that's why I gave the concert an average rating overall although there was plenty of music offered for the ticket price.

  • Loved the Summer Jazz Fest and the venue

by JazzyDez on 8/6/12Wolf Creek Amphitheater - College ParkRating: 4 out of 5

This was my partner and I first visit to the Wolf Creek Amphitheater. Open-air venue, slight drizzles of rain and summer time heat. As Ms. Rachelle Ferrell stated, "It's was good for us to all be together in this time and space -- in the right place". BTW, what else can I say about her as she was just awesome – the crowd more of her! By night fall, Michael Franks chilled us out with his mellow smooth vocals. There was even a cool breeze blowing through the amphitheater. Once Jonathan Butler, Maysa, and Warren Hill arrived, the crowd received them well. There was definitely law enforcement on hand and the entire event was peaceful. Could it be there were many “grown and sexy” people in the audience? The Mistress of ceremony and DJ were on que, keeping the crowd laughing, dancing and on their feet. Only issue was the poor planning of shuttle vans taking concert attendees to their parked vehicles. We were too tired to make the after party. In any case, we look forward to many more events in the future. It doesn't get any better than this!

  • by DSRivers on 8/6/12Wolf Creek Amphitheater - College ParkRating: 4 out of 5

Rachelle is AMAZING!!! Venue was great! I'm so glad they allowed food and drinks this time!!

  • by TMANP on 8/6/12Wolf Creek Amphitheater - College ParkRating: 4 out of 5

Awesome! Rachelle Farrell.....stole the show!!! I had a great time. I have nooooo complaints :-)

  • by Anonymous on 8/6/12Wolf Creek Amphitheater - College ParkRating: 4 out of 5

I definitely enjoyed this show. The only downside was Michael Franks has such a slow, mellow, smooth sound that I feel like the high energy from Rachelle Ferrell's perfomance was lost. I also didn't realize Jonathan Butler, Maysa & Warren Hill would be performing their set together. Thankfully, it worked well.
