About

JONATHAN BUTLER IN CONCERT:

Singer-songwriter Jonathan Butler became an apartheid hero in the ‘70s when his teenage debut single became the first song by a black artist to receive airplay on white radio stations in his native South Africa. Nearly 40 years later, he remains an enduring icon of positive social change through music, gracing audiences with his uplifting voice on inspiring performances of his early South African music and later classics like “Lies.” At his 2013 dates, Butler was joined on stage by his daughter, whose continued presence on tour as a backing singer ensures more spiritually satisfying shows in 2014.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in apartheid-era Cape Town, the precocious young Butler showed musical promise from an early age, beginning to tour at just age seven before going on to achieve success as a teen recording idol. After a stint with South African jazz-rock legends Pacific Express, Butler signed to Jive records, relocating to the UK to continue writing and recording. He achieved his biggest international success in 1987 with “Lies,” a Grammy-nominated hit that landed at No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100. Over the course of his decade-spanning career, Butler has released more than 20 albums, exploring a broad range of styles including jazz, pop, and gospel. Following the release of a Christmas album in 2013, Butler is once again the road for a string of highly anticipated North American dates.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

“Jonathan Butler feels every note he plays and sings, this was quite an evening with great music.”

“Musician, singer, songwriter Jonathan Butler provides a solid evening of entertainment featuring songs he has written, many made famous by other stars, but superbly covered by this great artist. His musicianship is stellar and his voice always a delight.”

“If Jonathan Butler ever comes close to your location, you must go. These days his daughter, Jody Butler, is performing with him. She's an unexpected treat.”

  • JB is still AMAZING! Embarrassed for audience!

by PapiRancier on 10/10/11Willett Hall - PortsmouthRating: 5 out of 5

Jonathan Butler continues to be an amazing, inspiring, funky, deep musician and entertainer. THis is my favorite outing with him--he did not share the stage with anyone and he did NOT play those tired pop songs that does not define him (even he was vocal about not singing Lies or Sara Sara). He took us on a journey to South Africa and took us to church also! He treated us to his guitar virtuosity (he made that guitar SING!). We have gone to 99% of all shows that he performed at hampton roads, even sat within arms reach when he performed at Blues Alley in DC but this show really beat them all. That said, i was very disappointed and even embarassed at the Willet Hall audience who didn't even applaud him half of the time! It was some kind of season-kickoff and the audience was mostly old (we're talking 70-80's) white people. It didn't stop me from enjoying the show, however, I want Jonathan to know that this audience was definitely not indicative of his performance! Come to Hampton and we'll show you love!

  • Outstanding show

The show was incredible. I see Jonathan Butler every chance I can get and often he is with other artists. It was very special that we could see him alone. I loved every moment of it!

Jonathan Butler never fails to deliver an excellent show. He is extremely talented and very soulful. I love the spiritual aspects of his show. I absolutely love when he brings a piece of his South African heritage to the stage. You can almost feel like you are there. Congratulations JB on another excellent show. Can't wait until you return to Hampton Roads again.

  • An Amazing Ending to the Summer Concert Series!!

by MsDLBR on 8/12/11Chene Park - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

This was by far the most enjoyable concert of the summer. Unlike some of the other performances in the series, both Maysa and Jonathan Butler were outstanding!!

This was our first time at the Gem - great venue, there was not a bad seat in the house! The show was absolutely unforgettable. I have loved Jonathan Butler for 20+ years, but seeing him perform live was a real treat. His daughter also performed - she has a beautiful voice.

by Cartridge on 5/23/11Gem Theater - Kansas CityRating: 5 out of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed the show. Jonathan Butler’s performance was absolutely GREAT, and the sound system was perfect! I will ALWAYS go to his concerts should he return back to Kansas City, MO. We were thoroughly pleased!! The only thing that was bad about the location of the event was that the Gem Theatre didn’t allow you to take your drinks into the auditorium with you.

  • Jonathan Butler was on point !!!

    by Weezie47 on 4/15/10Birchmere Music Hall - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

His concert was strong, sensual, spiritual, moving, romantic. The live perfomance at the Birchmere Music Hall allowed everyone to feel a connection with the artist, even allowing for personal song request. Jonathan Butler gave us his all, including some spiritual uplifting songs. He shared songs from his recent albums and took it back to the beginning with some of his first tunes. His voice and music is as strong today as it was over 30 years ago. Keep bringing us the music from your soul. I feel the message your sending, my brother!!

  • Glad I went!

Jonathan is such an entertainer! My spouse and I are celebrating our 27th anniversary and this was an unforgettable page of our celebration. I want to say thanks Jonathan for the realness and the recognition of God who is evidently first in your life. Always inspiring!

  • Awesome Entertainer

This was by far the best concert I have ever attended. The venue was great. Jonathan Butler is incredible and the food was great. I will definitely attend more events at the Birchmere. I also plan on going to see Jonathan Butler each time he's in town. Worth every penny.

The show was fabulous. Jonathan and his band are accessible, the "preaching" feel to the performance brings resonance to the soul of the music. The performance was natural and giving. I felt blessed! Birchmere is the best!

  • Awesome as always! He is the man!

    by Hollywood94 on 3/24/10Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

He broke it down as usual...what an incredible guitarist and vocalist. He brought in some the 80's music I'd almost forgotten and made it sound so crisp and clear. I had to go home and play it again Sam!

  • True Musicianship

    by 777Delighted on 3/24/10Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

Jonathan Butler's performance was superior!!!!! Well worth seeing on a weeknight, the distance and the lines. This was the first time a Birchmere, we see how people who are used to going there have the rythm of the access down. It's interesting. The food was good and the service was timely.
