JONATHAN BUTLER IN CONCERT:
Singer-songwriter Jonathan Butler became an apartheid hero in the ‘70s when his teenage debut single became the first song by a black artist to receive airplay on white radio stations in his native South Africa. Nearly 40 years later, he remains an enduring icon of positive social change through music, gracing audiences with his uplifting voice on inspiring performances of his early South African music and later classics like “Lies.” At his 2013 dates, Butler was joined on stage by his daughter, whose continued presence on tour as a backing singer ensures more spiritually satisfying shows in 2014.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Born in apartheid-era Cape Town, the precocious young Butler showed musical promise from an early age, beginning to tour at just age seven before going on to achieve success as a teen recording idol. After a stint with South African jazz-rock legends Pacific Express, Butler signed to Jive records, relocating to the UK to continue writing and recording. He achieved his biggest international success in 1987 with “Lies,” a Grammy-nominated hit that landed at No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100. Over the course of his decade-spanning career, Butler has released more than 20 albums, exploring a broad range of styles including jazz, pop, and gospel. Following the release of a Christmas album in 2013, Butler is once again the road for a string of highly anticipated North American dates.

I thoroughly enjoyed my night with Jonathan Butler. He is an extraordinary musician, songwriter and singer. He also has the cutest dance moves ever! Through his music and storytelling he gave us a glimpse into his life. His songs are beautifully romantic and soul stirring. It was a girls' night out and we had fabulous seats and were thoroughly entertained. Thank you Jonathan for sharing your gift with us!
The performers were great. The sound and lighting crews missed the mark though.
I have enjoyed both these artists, but came mainly for Jonathan Butler. Maysa disappointed, singing other people's songs, when she has plenty of her own good ones, and she made it known that she was there for the money, with at least 4 comments to that effect peppered throughout her time on stage. Jonathan Butler, on the other hand, quickly built a connection with the audience. He performed well, both vocally & instrumentally, and it was wonderful to watch him interact with his band members! Loved this part of the show, just wished Butler & his crew could have given up a few more songs. Too bad there were rude members of the audience that began to gather their belongings & leave in the middle of the last song; would have loved an ovation, at least.
Great show Maya was over the top.... she was great
As good as Jonathan Butler is, Maysa stole the show. Could have watched another hour of her on stage. She sounds as good if not better, than in the studio.
Maysa and Jonathan Butler put on an awesome show. It was truly a night for couples, girlfriends, and relaxation, a celebration of love and romance.The ambiance in the Music Hall was awesome. Truly enjoyed the show. ~Nachde
The concert was fantastic, Jonathan Butler was really good. Maysa was the highlight for me, she was stunning she was so good. She was worth the price all by herself, I loved it.

Second time seeing Jonathan Butler. He has definitely upped his performance. Enjoyed the beginning which included songs of South Africa.
This was my first time seeing Jonathan Butler and being in the Fillmore, both were nice, more importantly Jonathan Butler was absolutely amazing! The group that opened for him was really nice too! I'd like to see more jazz/inspirational events here at the Fillmore.
Musician, singer, songwriter Jonathan Butler provides a solid evening of entertainment featuring songs he has written, many made famous by other stars, but superbly covered by this great artist. His musicianship is stellar and his voice always a delight. His only misstep is giving his daughter too many solo parts in his show. She has a thin, untrained voice that sometimes compliments Mr. Butler in harmony, yet is woefully unprofessional on her own. When one pays to be entertained by Jonathan Butler, it is a disappointment to have to sit through his untalented offspring.
If Jonathan Butler ever comes close to your location, you must go. These days his daughter, Jody Butler, is performing with him. She's an unexpected treat. I recommend this show to all who love love, jazz and Jonathan Butler. He's awesome!!!
The opening act was excellent. Loved the entire show.
Young folks wouldn't understand! Let's see how Lil Wayne is hold in the industry after 30 + years! The wife and I enjoyed it emensly.
Found out about tickets at the last minute (email from Blues Alley the day before the event), purchased online as only a few were left. The opening act (Frederick Yonnet) was great. A lot of energy and a different instrument (harmonica) made his performance enjoyable. I have seen Jonathan Butler quite a few times (Cap Jazz Fest, Constitution Hall, etc) and his energy too is always high. Love his spirit and that he's a proud dad (his daughter sings with him)!
Jonathan Butler is a great performer. My wife and I truly enjoyed ourselves from start to finish. Music was great and Jonathan's interaction with the audience was fantastic.
