About

For over 30 years, Johnny Winter has been a guitar hero without equal. Signing to Columbia records in 1969, Johnny immediately laid out the blueprint for his fresh take on classic blues a prime combination for the legions of fans just discovering the blues via the likes of Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton. Constantly shifting between simple country blues in the vein of Robert Johnson, to all-out electric slide guitar blues-rock, - Johnny has always been one of the most respected singers and guitar players in rock and the clear link between British blues-rock and American Southern rock (a la the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd.) Throughout the '70s and '80s, Johnny was the unofficial torch-bearer for the blues, championing and aiding the careers of his idols like Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker.

    Johnny Winter was amazing

by SteveSquiresBand1 on 11/18/13C2G Music Hall - Fort Wayne

Johnny actually invited me on his bus with Bass Player Scott Spray and Guitarist Paul Nelson and signed a photo of the band, his CD, and my Fender Strat !! It was totally amazing and he was so nice to everyone you don't see that kind of situation anymore. The show was a Classic Johnny Winter come out smokin !! He still has an incredible drive and has survived longevity in his musical career. I did see him at the Eric Clapton Crossroads in 2009 and Derek Trucks had a big smile on his face playing next to him I could sense Derek's total respect for Johnny . Everyone had great comments after this show and I would go to another one in a heartbeat . He is a Legend in our times and I would recommend everyone seeing this great musician ! JW needs to retire!

by No999Name999 on 11/6/13Bears Den At Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel - Niagara Falls

I have seen Johnny Winter 8 times over the past 40+ years, but now it is time for him to hang up his guitar. Age and health have unfortunately caught up with him. His voice is weak and couldn't be heard at all. Once one of the best guitar players on the planet; he now suffers in that regard immensely.; very sloppy playing, etc. I felt ripped off with this concert. Many people left part way through the show. ... AND THIS COMES FROM A TRUE FAN.

    Johnny Winter is a classic!

by JackieBlues on 11/6/13Bears Den At Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel - Niagara Falls

Johnny Winter is one of the best guitarists and I'm such a big fan and have been for many years. I've seen him through his many changes, good and bad. He can still play like a pro and may need help to the stage but not with the guitar! The Bears Den is a fantastic place to see a show. The only criticism I have with this show is that they really needed to turn the microphone up on Johnny. You could barely hear his vocals over the music. Some people in the audience we even yelling to turn his mic up. It was obvious the sound need corrected. We still want to hear him sing! Also the show was barely 1 1/2 hours. I drove 2 1/2 hours just to see him!

    Johnny Winter

We had the best seats in the house. Front row center right in front of Johnny. What a great show. Johnny with his snake head cowboy hat came and performed like he always does - sensational!

Great guitar show - a bit disappointed in how quiet Johnny Winter's voice was for us - we could barely hear him singing. Not sure if it was the sound, his mic, or his voice. Other than that - wouldn't have missed the show - loved it!

    The Girls and Johnny

by JamesAN on 8/27/13Birchmere - Alexandria

First time I've seen Johnny Winter since 1969. Doesn't look much different but you can tell we are both 70 years old. He played lots of the old hits like he did with Johnny Winter And. The slick riffs are gone as well as the yelling but the backup band is excellent and it is Johnny Winter after all. He played a travel guitar for most of the set but switched to a full size playing slide for the last numbers. When playing the slide he was close to what we remember from the old days. It was great to see him still playing. Would I go see him again? Damn right, it is Johnny Winter after all.

    Johnny Winter

by DerBingle on 8/27/13Birchmere - Alexandria

I was so excited to finally get to see Johnny Winter and what a disappointment it was. Not so much from Mr. Winter but from whomever was handling the sound. The Birchmere of course has great acoustics and its a small venue. You would think that he was playing in Webley Arena in London as loud as the band was. Not Johnny, but the band. It was almost like I paid to hear the drummer and bass player. Rhythm guitar was great. You could hear him in the background and he wasn't overpowering. Just right, but the other two were so loud that you couldn't hear Johnny sing or his guitar most of the time. I noticed that when the drummer was tuning up he kept telling the sound man to raise the volume up on his drums. He didn't need to do that. Wouldn't go to see him again.

    Baskery rocks!

    by Sti1911 on 8/27/13Birchmere - Alexandria

This was one of those rare shows where the opening band was better than the main. Johnny winter would have been better if we could hear something other than the drums and the bass.

The only thing I would ask to be better would be the sound. Though I know sound can be hard to pull off. The music was so loud the a person could not hear Mr. Winter sing. The staff was great and very friendly. I am sure we will be back again.

Johnny's fingers still dancing across guitar.

by scaryhigh on 8/27/13Birchmere - Alexandria

Venue was great and really enjoyed Baskery the opening act. Johnny played a solid set list and displayed his guitar playing prowess. Vocals were hard to hear because of instrument volume. Still highly recommend a Johnny Winter show.

Winter more alive than ever. Baskery big surprise

by Jorgito on 8/27/13Birchmere - Alexandria

Johnny Winter and his band delivered a high energy set of blues and rock that showed his well earned fame as an iconic music figure. With the support and commitment of his band and entourage Johnny Winter is stronger than he was in a very long time. Highly recommend. The opening act Baskery was a big surprise: three young sisters that showed creativity and a polished delivery that reflected the deepest feelings of country music. The banjo player, at moments, was like Jimi Hendrix playing a sliding banjo

Great Performance - Johnny Winter still has it.

    by bluesfan9 on 8/27/13Birchmere - Alexandria

Johnny Winter's performance was good. His set list was great and included: Johnny B. Good, Good Morning Little School Girl, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Got My Mojo Working, and Highway 61. Usually, the Birchmere's sound quality is great and well balanced. However, the sound quality for Johnny Winter's performance was marginal. Johnny's mic had almost no EQ and sounded very thin. Johnny's vocals were buried in the house mix and the second guitar player over powered Johnny's guitar through most of this performance. The Birchmere is a great venue. We enjoyed this performance. Baskery (opening act) was great. An energetic performance with great vocals! Note: I saw Johnny Winter at the Birchmere several years ago, and the sound was much better.

    Time for Johnny to retire

by Ziky on 8/27/13Birchmere - Alexandria

Very disappointed, Johnny's voice was really bad and his guitar playing was nothing like it was even 2 years ago when we saw him. Time to retire, really, it was embarrassing. Baskery was pretty good, Swedish chicks playing country-tinged sort of swing/rock? They probably played just long enough, 4 songs or so is about all you need.

    a step backward

by trik on 8/27/13Birchmere - Alexandria

I see Johnny every time he comes to DC. This year he seemed more feeble than the past few. He was moving slowly as he walked in. he still can play the guitar at a high level. Playlist included Johnny B Good, Good Morning Little School Girl, Got my Mojo Working, Jumping Jack Flash, Gimme shelter and of course finished with the slide guitar and Highway 61 Revisited. His voice seemed a little stronger than in the past, but his microphone was not loud enough to hear him very well. Paul Nelson played wonderfully in backup role-- I would like to see him do more. I never tire of hearing Johnny Winter and hope that his health permits him to continue to play. I will not miss him in DC as long as he tours

    Sad

by popco on 8/27/13Birchmere - Alexandria

Johnny Winter is one of the greats. But either because of illness that particular night or something else, this was a very sad event. He could hardly sing, could hardly play a lick and the band was covering for him. This should not have been.

    Memories of the Past

by deanva on 8/25/13Birchere - Alexandria

I eagerly went to see Johnny last night. I had seen him a few years ago when he couldn't walk unassisted. He did last night and the crowd gave him a standing ovation when he walked out. A guitar legend like he is deserves it. However, his performance has gone down. The band is great, but Johnny, himself, is missing guitar licks over and over, and he can't sing anymore. The band seemed to play louder as possible cover for Johnny. We go to many concerts and the bands are aging. We don't expect the vocals of youth, but we do expect a high level of music. If I heard the performance on the radio and didn't know who it was, I would turn it off in a few minutes. We left early. Only a few people did. As great as he was in the past, I won't go see him again.

That man can play a blues guitar now!

by lllllllllllllll on 2/26/13Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

I don't care how old he is, he knows how to wail on a guitar! It was so loud, my ears were ringing after I left. I wish I could have gotten his autograph after the show. He was not feeling good, but I heard he did come out and sign, only after I left. It was very cold that night. I had an awesome time!
