Great show begining to end from the opening band through Johnny's powerful set.
Johnny was celebrating his 70th birthday but many in the audience have been celebrating hJohnny for the last50! From the moment he appeared on stage to his encore set, we all knew that we were in the presence of a Rocn and Blues God. Meeting and chatting with him after in his tour bus was almost too much to handle. Awesome evening. In many ways both spiritual and entertaining.
The evening started out with local Blues regulars The Elwood Splinters Blues Band, who played some regular Blues standards. Things definitely picked up in pace when Eddie "The Chief" Clearwater took the stage in his signature fashion, sporting a bright blue Indian head dress and finely polished chops with which he battled the flat, unfriendly acoustics of the former retail store. When Mr. Winter emerged, it was with assistance and difficulty that he was seated center stage. The years have taken a heavy toll on most of Mr. Winter' body, but somehow, thankfully, his fingers have been spared and he can still tear it up!
My son and I went to see the show. It is a memory which will last a life-time. Johnny Winter and his band were awesome. We had front row seats and the pictures were beyond my wildest dreams. Thank you for a great show!
JOHNNY WINTER SEEMS TO KEEP GETTING BETTER AND BETTER EVERY TIME WE SEE HIM AND AT THE SOCIAL A SMALL CLUB HE WAS OUTSTANDING. EVERY ONE SHOULD GO SEE JOHNNY WHEN HES IN YOUR TOWN. OR TRAVEL 3.5 HOURS LIKE WE DID. THE MAN IS INCREDIBLE.THANK YOU JOHNNY.
Great to see Johnny and his band again. Great show and great opening act. Lenny Lopez another Texas bluesman ripped the blues with hints of SRV and ZZ Top. I think we'll be seeing more of this powerhouse in the future. Johnny's guitarist Paul Nelson played a great opener with the band and burned on several trade offs with Johnny throughout the night. Johnnys' voice was strong and he encored with some scorching slide on his Gibson Firebird. As usual his playing was great and that guitar always cuts through like a dream. Happy Birthday John Dawson glad to have you back in Atlantic City!!!!!!
Living legend, just his stage presence was worth the the price of admission. Opened with Johnny B. Goode and closed with Highway 61. With more hits and the blues in between.
Johnny was looking good and sounding great. The band was very tight
I bought the box set at the show , good stuff !!! Looking forward to the Johnny Winter documentary "Down & Dirty" Also looking forward to seeing him again soon .... he still has chops !!
Seeing Johnny live,,probably for the 20th time in my life was great. Even though we both have to sit through the whole show. Johnny can still play the blues and rock it. The slide guitar and the end of the night with Highway 51 brought back great memories.
First, the bad. BB King’s is one of the worst venues I’ve been to in NYC, and I only go there to see very special people. No character/atmosphere, bad sight lines (unless you get there very early, which means you’re almost obligated to eat their mediocre and overpriced food), lousy beer and wine selection. In a city of great venues, this is pretty bad, and couldn’t survive in a less touristy part of town. The opening act was Lance Lopez and his band, who hail from my home town of Dallas. Lance played an impressive amount of notes in a short amount of time. I wish he had been as concerned about playing the music as much as he was about playing the guitar, though. And Johnny Winter can to both, and he did it wonderfully. It was a pleasure to see him sounding so good at 70. His voice, never his strong suit, was a little rough but always effective. So glad to see him so happy and in such good form- not like the ‘70’s, but a real treat. But maybe he should think about relocating his NYC shows- I’d prefer somewhere a little more funky, but City Winery seems like a natural fit.
Went w/ son & grandson... He loves guitar & this was a very special night for all of us. He even got Johnny, the band & his special guests autographs. I'm sure by next week he will know all about the Blues Legend! Will practice his guitar playing & will try some slide! Looking forward to Movie Dicumentary!
GREAT VENUE TO SEE A SHOW LIKE THIS! THE OPENING ACT WAS OUT OF THIS WORLD, GOT THE PARTY STARTED! JOHNNY CAN JAM STILL.....THOSE FINGERS KEPT A MOVING!
Great show and Valentines date. I ordered the CD box set he is putting out this month for his 70th birthday - I hope to hear the words.
This band is a really good band, no doubt. However, the sound production and level on Friday night clouded Johnny's voice way too much and that made it difficult to hear him sing. I go to all sorts of blues concerts to see the masters at work and this time out was a little disappointing. On virtually all of Johnny's studio recordings his voice is front and center, the sound boys buried him in the noise Friday. I understand a youthful audience and the volume they appreciate but the mixing crew missed the mark this night. Johnny lost his way on at the end of "Don't Take Advantage Of Me" transmorphed into the end of "Johnny B. Goode". Not that it was especially noticed by the audience (or maybe it was) but again, a flub that caught the bass and lead players a bit off guard. Being the professionals they are, they easily covered it though. Still a worthwhile show if only to see Johnny play. Too bad I couldn't hear him sing. Know your audience, sound guys.
Great evening of blues. Opening act was good. Johnny was good as usual, his backing band was great. the only problem with the show was you could not hear the vocals. I was about 15" off the stage and could not hear any vocals from Johnny, otherwise I would hae rated it a five star.
Awesome guitar playing (and I am not a huge fan of guitar playing) but he rocked the Newport. One downside was that you couldn't hear him sing. Wished they could have made that happen, maybe using the electronics?
Scheduled for 7:00, the doors didn't open till 7:40 and the opening act didn't start until about 8:45. Fairly small turnout so the balcony wasn't open. The main floor has very little seating which this mostly older audience sure could have used. The opening act, Scotty Bratcher was far better than Johnny Winter. The mix was bad, sound too loud and distorted. His just average back-up band mostly drowned out Johnny's playing and singing.
Great show! Super set list.We were in the presence of a true Rock legend!
We really enjoyed the show, we hadn't seen him before. Very good, he makes it look effortless.
