About

For over 30 years, Johnny Winter has been a guitar hero without equal. Signing to Columbia records in 1969, Johnny immediately laid out the blueprint for his fresh take on classic blues a prime combination for the legions of fans just discovering the blues via the likes of Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton. Constantly shifting between simple country blues in the vein of Robert Johnson, to all-out electric slide guitar blues-rock, - Johnny has always been one of the most respected singers and guitar players in rock and the clear link between British blues-rock and American Southern rock (a la the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd.) Throughout the '70s and '80s, Johnny was the unofficial torch-bearer for the blues, championing and aiding the careers of his idols like Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker.

    johnny winter

by rutt on 8/9/09The Ark - Ann Arbor

Venue was great. We will watch for more events. The concert was almost all up tempo and Johnny was often drowned out by his backing band. I had looked forward to some of johnny's acoustic country delta blues but it was not to be. The set was too short but johnny looks so frail maybe that's all he can do. Actually, the band sounded just as good without johnny when they opened the set. I was a little disappointed. But I got to see johnny live and that was cool!

Johnny Winter was acceptable, but not newsworthy

by CDACGC3 on 7/16/09The Ark - Ann Arbor

A short and acceptable set. Nothing spectacular, but a good show if you are a fan. No encore.

Best rendition of Red House in a loooooong time!!!

by DrMars on 7/16/09Durty Nellies - Palatine

My wife and I were thoroughly entranced with every note coming off of Johnny's guitar and from his vocal chords...Johnny Winter is and always will be part of our lives. We were thrilled to be able to see him in this small venue. Met friends there, the food was really good, and the whole evening was fantastic.

    nostalgic legend

by slowbones on 7/16/09The Ark - Ann Arbor

of course Johnny can't do what he used to. He has an excellent back up band and can still play better than a lot of up coming guitarists. His voice always was gutteral. He is for people who remember and for people who want to see a living legend. He started playing at 8pm and was done by 10 so us senior citizens could get to bed at a decent hour! Plays the geriatric blues like no other.

    Johnny Winter - enough said.

by dteach on 7/16/09The Ark - Ann Arbor

If you like guitar, you can't help but love Johnny Winter. This is how it's done. Highway 61 is nearly a religous experience (I'm very partial to slide guitar)

    Johnny Winter

by TomDuet on 7/15/09Durty Nellies - Palatine

Johnny Winter is Johnny Winter. Stroke or no stroke. He played a mean slide and was picking good. He sounded good as well. The pa in the house was lousy, at least on the stage and was too loud. Johnny still had his magic touch. Jam On Dude. Happy picking I would have liked him to do some songs himself, Key to the highway or something mellow like that.

It's always a treat to see Johnny Winter

by ZombieBirdhouse on 7/15/09Durty Nellies - Palatine

When I was 11 years old, my older sister had one of those cheap stereos with clip-on speakers and a fold out turntable. I would unclip the speakers and put them up to my ears and blast that first Johnny Winter album every chance I got. I got my first chance to see him when I was 15 years old (1975 at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago), and have only missed two of his Chicago show since. I'm guessing that I've seen 18 to 20 Johnny Winter shows. It is always a treat to see Johnny, it's become a family tradition, and it's an event for us every time he comes to town. I had the pleasure of meeting him once, and he was unbelievably gracious. We're all happy to see his health improving (we were pretty worried for a while there). I loved the show, as did the other 9 folks I went with. My only wish -- and this is because I see him so often -- is that he would take some liberties with his set list. He has such a deep catalog of amazing material, yet 90% of the set has been the same over the past ten years or so. I saw one show at the Park West in the early 80's where he went off the set list entirely and just played what he felt like for almost three hours. Of the hundreds of shows I've seen in my life, that was one of the best. If you've never seen him, you owe it to yourself to see one of the true blues greats. He is the genuine article.
