Never ceases to amaze. Do not miss John Hiatt and the Combo...
John and the Combo were great. Really strong, beautifully layered, and dueling guitars between John and Doug Lancio throughout, with great rockin' and complex lyrics of Haulin', the Open Road, Masters of Disaster, Ethylene, and Drive South, with four encore numbers including Tennessee Plates, Crossing Muddy Waters, and Thing Called Love.
Great show would recommended to all my friends. He was awesome. To see
This show was excellent as Hiatt and his band performed a good variety of his songs over the course of a 2 1/2 show. The rhytmn section was solid and the guitar player did a lot of very tasty guitar work. Hiatt's voice is in great form, and he has real charisma on stage. My group would like to see Hiatt pull out more obscure tunes and stay away from the over played tunes like Drive South and Have a Little Faith in Me. I know his fans want to hear those tunes but he doesn't even sound all that invested in them at this point. He did fine versions of Buffalo River Home and Perfectly Good Guitar, but how about Stolen Moments, Memphis in the Meantime, My Sweet Girl, as the guy has a great back catalog.
Nice song selection, I admire him alot for not just rolling out the hits, even though crowd was begging for some. Some of the new material is tasty and should age well. His voice was a bit off, could be a cold, allergy's, or just the mileage. He takes chances with it, and that is to be commended. The Combo underpinned him when needed, and flexed their muscles when the time was right. The between song banter was on the money, all in all a lovely night out for me and the missus.
John's voice was better than ever. The band was adequate. Great set list
John Hiatt and the Combo were fabulous and truly entertaining throughout the performance
John Hiatt was great as usual. He seemed tireless and loved the variety of songs he sang. Band was great. The set lasted almost two and a half hours with one great song after another.
I've been following John Hiatt since I first saw him on Austin City Limits in 1995. Last night's performance was exceptionally good from start to finish. His backup musicians were perfect. I was blown away.
So good to hear him with a rockin band. Played alot from the new CD but also old favs. Great intro to real fine love. The only thing that I missed was some back up vocals. Nobody else even had a mike!
Great performance, good mix of old and new. Backing band, "the Combo" did a great job
John Hiatt and the Combo are absolutely incredible! They give an all out performance, full of energy. John Hiatt never ceases to amaze me.
John Hiatt is outstanding!!! Very gracious, humble, kind, and the most superb songwriter and guitarist this side of anywhere!!! Hiatt Rocks (and Rolls...)!!! The Combo did an outstanding job as well. Would return nightly to get my fix of these guys, situations permitting.
John Hiatt never fails to impress. He and the band performed incredibly, played both new & old songs, and incorporated the crowd. Afterwards, they stayed after to sign autographs & take pictures, and went out of their way to be nice to their fans (i.e. the lead guitarist LEFT his seat/table to come take pictures with my sister & I when the staff would not let us back after taking one step away from the table).
Hiatt brought the house down in a set that included all the hits form the last 10 years and just a few from his new recording "Open Road". The show lasted a solid 2 hours after a stirring opener by Holly Williams. Those like the old favorites will love this tour. The Combo as has been the case during the last album tour were polished and right on behind John. Doug Lancio and Patrick O'Hearn as good as ever and technically brilliant, if not a little too sterile.
John Hiatt is amazing!!!!!! I have been listening to him since I was a kid and am so glad he is as amazing life (if not better) as he is on recording. It was also great of him to come out afterwards and sign autographs and take pictures. He was very polite and modest about it all.
If you like John Hiatt's music but have never seen him live, or even if you don't know his music at all, this is a "can't miss" show! Hiatt's gruff, dynamic, and far-reaching voice was phenomenal, not to mention his exceptional guitar skills. And unlike many guitar greats who put on a good show but dont engage with the audience (ahem, Clapton...), Hiatt was very social and loves to tell a good story or two in between songs. And he was grateful - grateful to be playing in front of a packed house, and thankful that the audience chose to spend their limited discretionary income on watching him live. And for this the audience was amply rewarded - he played his heart and soul out for about 3 hours. Though Hiatt had a semi-rough time getting started in Nashville, I'm grateful he has not had to succumb to a lifetime at a major label that would try to force him to adjust his music to Top 40 generic radio pleasers. He's a still somewhat under-the-radar phenomenan that the music world - and its followers - are lucky to have.
John Hiatt was amazing as always. I enjoyed his new songs better live than on the CD. Doug Lanzio was INCREDIBLE! I would see any show Lanzio performed in. I could have listened to him play all night.
Great venue, great musician, great evening!! John and the Combo played for over 2 1/2 hours straight. Opener -- Holly williams (yes-Hank Williams Jr.'s daughter) and her talented husband were a bonus! Thanks Birchmere for another great evening!
They kept playing and playing and playing. Great mix of old and new stuff. Wonderful interaction between John and the audience. He was very funny and truley a nice person to meet after the show.
