Excellent, but one problem
by Mel Profit on 8/16/22The Walker Theatre - ChattanoogaWe had first row seats at the Walker but they were towards the right side, not centered, facing the stage. The view of John Hiatt and the other players was excellent, and the sound quality was good with one huge exception. Slide player Sonny Landreth was positioned at the left of the stage, and from where we sat his vocals and especially his guitar work could hardly be heard. As my wife commented after the show, she primarily watched Sonny’s hands in lieu of actually hearing his playing. The overall concert was good enough that this did not ruin the evening. But we paid our $200 plus at least as much to hear Sonny’s slide work as hear John Hiatt’s vocals— and as a missing piece this was a big one to say the least. Indeed, the one time the mix sounded right was when I went to the lobby to buy a vodka. Which raises my real point: I have been attending amplified concerts for more than fifty years, and at this point in the evolution of live performance the people running a concert hall ought to know more about sound balance and mix than this.
