I took my teenage daughter and some friends to this performance and we we're all completely enchanted. The dancers we're flawless and the contrast of the different styles of ballet that we're performed made for an extremely interesting experience.
The Joffrey's September 11 appearance in Des Moines gave the dance-deprived city an exemplary taste of what could, with support, arise between its seasonal resurrections of the Nutcracker. In such a context, criticism must surely be irrelevant. Even so, as probably the only person in the audience who had seen the Joffrey perform both "The Clowns" and "The Green Table" when the company was based in New York, I was left wondering if, given a different venue and program, the company could really deliver. They certainly made me sit up and pay attention, but I wonder if they can still bring me to the edge of my seat. Instead of crowning the evening, "Age on Innocence" had to pit its recorded music (Philip Glass, at that) against the earlier live, and lively, contributions by the University of Iowa Orchestra on "Kettentranz," "...smile with my heart," and "Carousel a Dance." All things considered, the evening's award goes to the latter, to the entertaining, amusing, and at times touching interpretations of Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic musical. To see if I can connect any dots and find a thread of Joffrey continuity through the decades, I'll have to visit Chicago this season to see their new "Othello." Based on the calibre of the dancing and the inventiveness of the dances and the productions, especially the lighting, I'm expecting the the answer will be a resounding "yes."
The dances were all on the fluffy side. No sets, no costumes, and pretty light repertoire, except the last. The intro was too long, the video unnecessary. There was no need for two intermissions and a pause. This event could have ended 45 minutes earlier. At least we missed the Britanny Spears traffic! The dancers were excellent, but not outstanding. The orchestra hit some sour notes here and there, but overal was fine. The highlight music was the off-stage ensemble.
This performance was well worth the price of the ticket and the parking hassle. And the U of I musicians are so talented. Loved every minute of it!
I seldom use the word 'beautiful' to describe an event, but spending the evening with the Joffrey troupe was an incredible experience. I'm not much of a dance fan, but my attitude changed by the first intermission. It was simply beautiful.
Exceptional choreography, music, and performances! I enjoyed the entire evening. The final set, danced to music by Phillip Glass, was extraordinary. The audience erupted at the end and brought all the dancers back three times to bathe in the raving applause.
The problem is that this event started later in the evening (8pm) than most events held there (7pm). The extra hour really took it's toll on the audience. By the 2nd intermission it was already 10pm with another hour to go. Some people started leaving after the 2nd intermission.
