About

JOE SATRIANI IN CONCERT:

Joe Satriani’s virtuoso guitar playing is more than just flawless technique and blistering speed -- he also forms an emotional connection with fans that is beyond words. His genuine love of riff-based rock ensures that audiences are in for a sonic thrill ride at his live shows, where his nimble fingers and finely tuned ear bring his ballads to life. While “Satch” (as friends and fans refer to him) turns melodies inside out and shreds up a storm, his cast of astounding supporting musicians keeps the grooves solidly rocking throughout six-string stunners like “Surfing with the Alien”, “Satch Boogie”, and “Flying in a Blue Dream”.  Ticket buyers are in for a transcendent instrumental experience that can't be beat, featuring a brilliant musician in impeccable form.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

The highest-selling instrumental rock guitarist of all time, Joe Satriani was born in Westbury, NY in 1956. Before he gained fame, Satch made a living teaching some of the most influential guitarists of the ‘80s, including Kirk Hammett (Metallica), Steve Vai (David Lee Roth), and Larry LaLonde (Primus). His solo career took off with the hits “Always with Me, Always with You” and “Satch Boogie” off his 1987 album Surfing with the Alien. He kept his hot streak alive with his next two albums Flying in a Blue Dream (1988) and The Extremist (1992), which both went gold. In 1996 Satriani started the G3 Tour with friends Steve Vai and Eric Johnson to bring instrumental guitar music to the masses. In 2008 Satch joined forces with former Van Halen members Sammy Hagar (vocals), Michael Anthony (bass), and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith to create the supergroup Chickenfoot. While those projects keep him crazy busy, Satriani still continues to tour -- bringing venues like Warner Theatre to capacity -- and record as a solo artist, releasing Unstoppable Momentum in 2013.

What can I say - It's Satriani!!!! I bought the album the moment it came out and was really looking forward to the show, and Joe did not disappoint for sure. Good mix of older tunes as well as the ones from the new album - no fan of Joe's could be possibly disappointed!!!

    Another amazing performance!

by oteskate on 12/17/10Best Buy Theater - New York

To be honest, after hearing Joe's recent release, "Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards", I wasn't too sure what to expect at this show, as I feel that this is one of his weakest albums to date. Not that I don't enjoy the music, but I felt that it lacked the technicality and "groove" of most all the other albums. To my surprise, this turned out to be an amazing show of greatest hits! He played everything from the early albums to today with alot in between. I was especially impressed when he played "War" and songs from the Crystal Planet days, along with the ever famous Always with Me/You, Summer Song, etc. I thought that Keneally was a nice addition to the band with some really tasteful keyboard playing, along with the ever-great drumming of Jeff C. His new bassist was a bit out of place IMO, as he was a bit too "up front" for my taste and looked a bit more on the heavier rock side of things. He definitely didn't fill Stu Hamms shoes, as I miss the bass lines throughout many of the songs that Stu would add, especially on the "Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing". Joe's sound was overall pretty good considering that he has switched back to the Marshall amp sound. A bit gritty at times, but overall smooth and pleasing to the ears. Overall, the venue was great and the show was amazing. I would definitely suggest getting out to see Joe on this tour as I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Nothing else like a Joe Satriani show!!!

by RickNeuhoff on 12/17/10Best Buy Theater - New York

I know it sounds corny, but with the hundreds if not thousands of concerts that I've seen and the dozens of times I've seen Joe Satriani perform... this was one of the absolute best concert experiences I have ever had. Joe's technical mastery of the guitar is only surpassed by his soulful and heartfelt melodic sensibilities and expression of pure joy in the moment of spontaneous collaboration and musical exploration. Joe's backup band was solid as a rock, giving him all the foundation any soloist could ever wish for. Having said that, Joe allowed the guys plenty of room to express their own musical styles and personalities. In fact, bassist Allen Whitman held down the groove and was right "in the pocket" but also often pumped up the crowd from the stages edge, playing lead bass and pushing boundaries of the instrument's limitations. Allen is a true virtuoso with amazing energy. Rhythm guitarist Galen Henson was the perfect sideman, showing no ego as he consistantly laid down rock solid rhythmic tapestries. One of rock's most under rated and overlooked rhythmatists, Jeff Campitelli is nothing short of an amazing drummer who has the restraint to lock down the pulse, adding just enough spice to build interesting and intriguing beats while patiently waiting for ideal moments to explode in furious solo bursts. The unexpected icing on the cake was Mike Keneally on keyboards. I was certain that Mike would be playing rhythm guitar as he has done with "Satch" for years and with Frank Zappa back in the day... but now I'm dating him. Mike Kenneally on keyboards was a real treat, not only did he spread etherial soundscapes but he traded off lead lines with "Satch" practically note for note. What an "ear" Mike has... amazing, simply amazing. The beginning of the show approached too much to listen to, I wanted to hear it all, take in every note each member of the band was adding to the musica recipe but as I allowed my hunger to subside and I submitted, giving myself to the rhythms, allowing the distinct vibe of each piece to flow through me, the brilliance of Joe Satriani's virtuosity cut through and lead the way to new heights of fretboard surfing, inspiring mental gymnastics from the audience as we all seemed to effortlessly sing along in our heads with Joe's soaring melodies. I cannot give this concert any higher praise.

Joe Satriani is quite possibly the greatest living guitarist in the world. He and his band rock loud, hard, and fast. He is pleasant on stage and doesn't let up. There was only one song with vocals because the guitar does the singing. If you are a fan of music and musicianship, go see Joe Satriani. Best Buy Theater was a pretty nice venue too. Great sound.

    Beautiful show, great place.

by luizesramos on 12/16/10Best Buy Theater - New York

I finally realized my dream of seeing Joe Satriani playing live. Nokia/Best Buy theater was a very cozy nice place and they put seats there this time (not always the case). I wish it had been a stand-up show so we could jump around and come closer to the stage :-) Joe & band mixed songs from many of his CDs with songs from his latest one, which was a good idea. The band was in a great mood. I have 2 minor suggestions for the theater though: (1) the event time printed on my ticket was 7:00pm, when the show actually started at 8:50pm. I wish I knew that, because we had to wait in line outside the theater (windy 26F); (2) I don't like marijuana and I wonder if the theater could have done anything to prevent people from using it there. If you like Joe and you have the chance to go see him, take it! :-)

He is not of this earth!!!

by TheRiseOfMetal on 12/16/10Best Buy Theater - New York

Satch was AMAZING live! The things he can do on his guitar, I thought were in-humanly possible. I am a guitarist myself, and to hear all the different sounds and tones he got out of his guitar playing live was amazing. He made not one mistake NOT ONE! It sounded like i was listening to him in the studio preforming songs and improvising between tracks thats how perfect he was and he seemed like he wasn't even trying haha. It came so easy to him. Joe if you read this, you are the best guitarist ever. You are too good to be true man. Your playing is not of this Earth man!

    Satriani is brilliant

by Lorettamarie on 12/16/10Best Buy Theater - New York

Satriani's performance at the Best Buy Theatre was brilliant. His band adds so much more depth to his magnificent guitar, especially on his new music, like Premonition and Wormhole Wizards. John Petrucci was the icing on the cake. I brought my 16 year old son...we were both amazed.

The Wizard Soars Outside the Wormhole

by DrAlan on 12/16/10Best Buy Theater - New York

It was a cold, and blustery night. The air was filled with the scent of snow and the vendors' warm salty pretzels........ I have been a concert attendee for over 40 years, particularly, Manhattan and Staten Island and was very impressed with the logistics employed by the Best Buy Theater. The security staff handled the ticket holders, from the line up, announcing the actual time frame of the event, having the tickets ready, the pat down, scanning our tickets and entrance, was achieved in a courteous and professional manner. While inside, the announcement of wrist bands for alcohol was a welcome change from those venues where it seems that everyone was allowed to drink, and one was at risk of slipping on a beer slick floor. Also of note: the bathrooms are, thankfully, functional, spacious and well maintained. I cannot remember, if at all, a concert that actually began on a set schedule. The acoustics at the Best Buy Theater was fantastic. I could hear, clearly, the vocals, as well as the balanced sound of Joe and his band. Joe's playing seemed effortless, as he appeared to barely break a sweat, having performed for two plus hours. His command of the guitar is incredible, with many of his songs sounding like symphonic pieces. The band is a tight, cohesive unit. Guest players are always a treat, and seeing two highly skilled musicians, John Petrucci and Joe "dueling", was a great way to end the show. This was our maiden voyage to the Best Buy Theater. Our entire experience was thoroughly enjoyable, from beginning to end. I look forward to more of the same in the near future.

by Therman on 12/15/10Best Buy Theater - New York

First of all I went in with Club Joe, which I highly recommend, he is one of the best musicians when it comes to fans that I've ever met. He actually seemed glad to see us, and took the time to answer all of our questions. Onto the show. I have rarely seen so flawless a performance, but this was one of them. It was awe inspiring. Truly one of the best concerts I've ever seen.
