Jessie Reyez in Concert
Combining unapologetic lyrics with in-your-face vocals, Toronto-born singer-songwriter Jessie Reyez is one of pop's brashest personalities. Reyez played guitar as a child and realized she was a music writer while in high school. In 2014 she collaborated with Chicago-based MC King Louie on his Canada-saluting track "Living in the Sky." In 2016 she broke through on her own with "Figures," a stark post-breakup track paired with a gripping video that showcased Reyez's raw feeling. "Evoking emotion from people is always a byproduct," Reyez told Genius. "It's not like I aimed to do that, but it's a beautiful byproduct that happens to come from certain songs."
Now, as a recipient of a JUNO award, 2018 Breakthrough Artist of the Year, she could say her subsequent catalog has been an object lesson in releasing that byproduct. Her debut EP, 2017's 'Kiddo,' was steeped in feeling while also showing off her musical range and the delirious "Shutter Island" pairs her yowl with macabre carnival music, while "Great One" shows off her softer side, its plush synths allowing her to luxuriate in existential questions like "What is life? What is love? What is time? What is choice?" The harrowing 'Kiddo' track "Gatekeeper," accompanied by a short film that she cowrote, turned a #MeToo-worthy experience from years ago that almost led to her quitting the music business into an artistic triumph.
While gearing up for the release of her second EP, 'Being Human in Public,' Reyez has kept busy with guest appearances and relentless touring. Her reworking of "Figures," performed with fellow Canadian Daniel Caesar at the 2018 JUNO Awards, added a dramatic twist to the song's heartbroken narrative; her turn as Eminem's foil on the controversial MC's 2018 track "Nice Guy" shows how she can hold her own against music's biggest names; and her performances at festivals like Lollapalooza and Afropunk have electrified huge crowds. Reyez's rise is proof that pure feeling can be a powerful connector.

Her crowd work even got my friend, who barely knew a few of her songs, to feel included, energized, and seen. The seamless setlist simulated her musical themes of “only real ones up on my roster” in that, she catered the show not just to new fans, but to her oldest fans that followed her since before “Kiddo”. On the Yessie tour, we felt at home; she made us feel like we belonged.

by smin on 11/3/22Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5Jessie Reyez was amazing, have been trying to see her for years and when I finally got too it did not disappoint, the venue in times before this has always been amazing but this time I did see security and some staff targeting some indigenous concert goers which was extremely upsetting and Jessie herself stopped the show a few times to try and deescalate the situation but at the end when she had left they became much more aggressive, calling the cops.

Otherwise, it was a very pleasant venue to be at & a crowd you would expect for an artist as deep as Jessie Reyez.

I paid almost $200 to be a few rows back in at the aisle. So for people to come and crown the aisle and in front was a little frustrating.

It sounded even better live than the studio recorded version. She did an impromptu song a capella which sounded fantastic. She made me feel very seen and included sitting up in the balcony. Her stage prescence is incredible. Like she is a friend up there singing. I will definitely see her live again.

At first we we’re on the balcony for the opening numbers. We ended up upgrading because we’d hope the sound was better and it was sort of, but not amazing! :( that was a bummer! I was talking to people after and they said it this venue wasn’t the greatest. Probably won’t go to another music show there.

We got a nacho bowl, pulled pork sandwich and a preztle, all were tasty! Jessie Reyez put on a great show as usual!!
