About

Jason Mraz left his Virginia hometown right after high school and struck out for New York City to find his fame and fortune. Honing his skills by busking on the streets in the Big Apple, Jason decided that perhaps this line of work could be performed in a nicer climate. Next stop: San Diego, and soon Jason moved from the outdoor beachside stages to inside a local hot spot called Java Joe's.  It was there he met percussionist/vocalist Toca Rivera and the two made a name for themselves all along the California coast. He released his own CD, Jason Mraz: Live and Acoustic 2001, which got the attention of all the major record labels.
His first release on Elektra, Waiting For My Rocket To Come, was released in November 2002. The album sold platinum and included the hit single "The Remedy (I Won't Wait)".  That success led to Jason's second release, this time on sister label Atlantic, the Grammy-nominated Mr. A-Z, which debuted at #5 on the charts, and featured the hit single "Wordplay".
For his all-important third album, Jason traveled to England to work with producer Martin Terefe, best known for his work with Coldplay and James Morrison (who guests on the intricate Details in the Fabric). The result is We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things. which garnered three Grammy nominations - Song of the Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, both for "I'm Yours", and Best Engineered Album.  "I'm Yours", the first single from the album, holds the distinction of being the only song to ever top the radio airplay charts in the U.S. in all four major formats - Top 40, Adult Alternative, Adult Contemporary and Hot Adult Contemporary. The second single from the album is "Lucky", a duet with platinum singer-songwriter Colbie Caillat.
In his spare time, Jason is an avid photographer in the unlikely realm of Polaroids. A book of 50 of his unretouched and non-photoshopped photos entitled "a thousand things" was released in October 2008 and has spread the word about this multi-talented artist to the world of galleries and bookstores. Jason is the consummate musical and visual artist of the new century.

    jason mraz a little disappointed

by alli42840 on 7/26/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

jason mraz is awesome however at the concert he played way too many new songs that no one really knew and he also drew a lot of the songs out for way too long. he played a lot of slower jazzy music and it poured the entire time so it kind of put my friends and i down a bit. wished he would have played you and i and some of his more upbeat songs.

    Incredibly Talented Performers, Wrong Venue

by LovesAGoodShow on 7/26/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

I thought everyone who played was fantastic - Eric Hutchinson and G. Love and Special Sauce included. My issue with the show was that I found Merriweather Post Pavilion to be the wrong venue for a Jason Mraz show. His music is fantastic, he's far beyond most stars today in terms of talent, and he puts on a great show; he's just too chill for an outdoor amphitheatre of 5,000 people. He's not the type of guy to play huge, powerful anthems that get people jumping up and down and singing along (even though I know his lyrics, I can't keep up with him!), which is the type of artist to which a place like Merriweather is conducive. That said, I still stayed out in the pouring rain for hours to see his full set, and I would still recommend anyone to see his show. The man is phenomenal - I had no idea that operatic vocalizing on the album was him, AND it sounded just as good live as it did on the album! In terms of the show being at the wrong venue, the rain is worth noting as well. The show might have been able to bring out that lawn-seats-at-a-big-concert vibe a little more successfully had everyone not been soaking wet and shivering. All in all, still a great show that I would absolutely recommend.

    INCREDIBLE SHOW!!

by JMrazFan on 7/26/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

This simply was an amazing show (as always). Jason always puts so much energy in his performances, as does the band. Everything went off without a hitch.

    Jason Mraz doesn't disappoint

by goofyhome on 7/26/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

Jason Mraz is a natural. He comes alive onstage and is one of the best entertainers in concert that I have ever seen. This concert was the fifth time I have seen Jason on stage and each concert is filled with energy and is different from the cookie cutter concerts that other artists may present.

The openers were great, especially Eric Hutchinson and not even rain could spoil a night like that!

    Jason Mraz + thunderstorms

by Holler on 7/26/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

This concert was plagued by a huge rainstorm that soaked everyone for about an hour. By the time Jason came on, it made the music way better.

Jason Mraz is an unbelievable performer live. His band is so talented and super tight. Not a lot of flashy, showy nonsense... just a bunch of guys playing amazing music.

    Jason Mraz is the best!

by Hotwheelz on 7/26/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

The concert was fantastic. Jason made my 13-year old daughter's year by signing her T-Shirt. Despite the rain, the crowd was very friendly and enthusiastic. G. Love put on a great show as well!

Mraz is always an amazing show

by ITK1 on 7/26/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

We've been seeing Jason Mraz perform since 2003 and he has never let us down. Even since he's gone from small college venues to huge arenas, he still interacts with the audience and makes you feel like he's there just to hang out and have a good time.

    Mraz exceeded expectations!

by BPresc on 7/26/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

I knew that Jason Mraz was talented, but I had never seen him live until this show. He is an incredible live performer! If you think his studio work is good, wait until you see him in person! This is a show that you do not want to miss!

    Mraz's voice is incredible

by JLieb on 7/26/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

Simply put, he has the best live voice that I've ever heard. He sounded way better than the albums. You could also tell that he was really happy to be there playing for everybody, which transferred to a positive vibe in the crowd. Great superband too.

Ist Mraz concert blew me away!

by mrazfan on 7/26/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

By 9pm Merriweather Post was packed, inside and out, and the rain was pouring down. We'd just gotten through a very entertaining half hour of Eric Hutchinson, who started the evening off, followed by some band call G-Sauce something or other. They were up there for over an hour, and personally, I thought they stank. So by the time Mraz came I out I was in a pretty critical mood. Let me put it this way: Mr. A-Z is in love with music, in love with making people dance and sing, and in love with life. And he tried his darnedest to make every living soul at his concert to feel the same way before he left. Did he succeed? HELL YEAH!!!! I danced. I sang. I cried. And I felt great!

Jason Mraz made us forget about all the rain!!!!

by soakinwetpollock on 7/26/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

Saw Jason Mraz at Merriweather last night - we had lawn seats and it POURED down the rain the entire night. We were cold, soaked, and miserable but it was sooooooo worth it! Jason Mraz is an amazing artist and an incredible performer. He made the rain bearable =) He even did a few encores!

    the rain didn't stop us!

by Ca11meren on 7/26/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

Despite the torrential downpour that kicked off the concert, Jason was well worth the wait. He was very interactive with the audience and took us on an emotional journey through his music. And his brass band ROCKED!

    Remarkable songwriter, singer, and showman

by Baldzenman on 7/26/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

This was a perfect storm of the three pillars of Mraz's gifts of writing, singing, and turning on a crowd. We debated all the way back which was his strength, and the conclusion is that all of them are his strengths. I have seldom attended a concert at which so many people knew all the words of the performer's songs, a tribute to his craftsmanship at writing singable songs. And it is no small feat to sing all the words to one of his songs -- he has more words per verse than most!
