About

JASON ISBELL IN CONCERT:

Alt-country singer/songwriter Jason Isbell is a master of writing songs that maximize the emotional impact of his heartrending voice. From his time with the Drive-By Truckers to his solo material with his band the 400 unit, Isbell has proven himself a consummate storyteller, building a loyal fanbase with his stripped-down, emotionally relatable songs. Riding high on the success of fourth album Southeastern, Isbell will support Ray LaMontagne on tour in 2014, rounding out his time on the road with select headline appearances of his own.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born and raised in Northern Alabama, Isbell grew up playing music, encouraged by his musical family to take up multiple instruments. After a brief stint as a songwriter, he joined southern rockers the Drive-By Truckers for their 2001 tour in support of their album Southern Rock Opera, staying on with the band as a guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter until leaving to pursue a solo career in 2007. His debut album Sirens of the Ditch was well-received by critics, providing him enough momentum to put together a full band for 2009 sophomore outing Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit. With his fourth studio album Southeastern topping critics’ lists in late 2013, Isbell once again hit the road for a string of highly anticipated 2014 tour dates.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

" Jason is an entertainer that writes from his soul and you can feel it in his performances. I would recommend anyone seeing him and his band."

" Jason Isbell and his band put on a phenomenal show, as they always do. The crowd was excited and engaged."

    Audience was horrible!

by NashvilleMusicFanMan on 8/20/13Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

I came to hear Jason Isbell sing, but all I heard was every song sung by the audience. A waste of time and money. Never going to another Ryman show. What's with the audience not wanting to hear the artist singing their songs by themselves?? I don't want to hear anyone sing but the act I've paid for. Extremely disappointed!

    Thrilled I saw this show!

by JujieB on 8/20/13Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

I was almost speechless after the Jason Isbell show Sat. night at Ryman Auditorium. I don't know when I have been so taken with an album as I am with 'Southeastern'. I will always remember this tour and this music as the best in any genre around today. His gift for songwriting and delivery is astounding. Beautiful, truthful, heartfelt and real. What an experience this show was. It was nice to hear people singing along to all the new stuff! Perfect show from the best out there today.

    Jason Isbell at the Ryman

by StishLa on 8/20/13Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

Amazing. Amazing performance, amazing venue, amazing sound. It is only due to my own oversight and delay in purchasing tickets that we had a partially obstructed view, but it was still a very nice experience. Also, if you have not checked out Caitlin Rose, DO IT. She was also AMAZING. :)

Jason Isbell along with the 400 Unit & Amanda Shires put on an amazing performance at The Ryman on August 17th. The band was having a great time and the audience sang along as they played songs from the new album ""Southeastern", as well as favorites from previous albums. Best show ever!

by Missark on 8/20/13Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

I have anticipated this show for so long, was very concerned it simply could not be as good as I expected it to be - I was so wrong - it was even better than I anticipated. 2 hours of pure music!

Jason Isbell a real southern treasures

by Anonymous on 8/1/13The Sinclair - Cambridge

Jason Isbell is a great song writer whose lyrics are nothing short of poetic. His voice is strong and true. The combination of voice and verse is very dramatic. The 400 Unit is a real treat Especially good. All and all a night of great entertainment.

Jason Isbell with Amanda Shires ...Fantastic

by knoller on 8/1/13The Sinclair - Cambridge

Terrific night of music at great venue! When Amanda Shires walked on stage, and quietly approached the mike to sing a song a capella, the room was captivated. Her minimalist set, accompanying herself on ukelele was full of quirky & heartfelt songs that pulled you in. Jason came on stage to accompany her on a couple of songs ... "Bulletproof" was amazing! After a short break Jason Isbell returned to the stage with the incredible 400 Unit and Amanda on fiddle. They opened the set with Flying Over Water, and continued to tear it up! The mix of songs from full tilt to slow ballads was wonderfully balanced. Their 3-song encore ended with a killer version of the Stones, Can't Ya Hear Me Knocking. Overall an incredible night of music!

    Jason Isbell at his best!!!

    by Norm13 on 7/8/13Birchmere - Alexandria

Good venue with great sound. Excellent mix of old/new and an unbelievable cover. I was not looking forward to Southestern tunes but a couple of them, including opener -Stockholm were outstanding and convinced me to re-listen with more respect. Band was on top of their game, Jason was a combination of comic, band-leader, axman, and entertainer; his stage persona has become big-league. Rarely have I witnessed such rare talent in such a venue. To that point; same old Birchmere. Gotta arrive too early (5pm) and the food sux. But the sight-lines, sound, and cozy room make it worth the occasional show.

Jason Isbell is one of a kind

by BigGameBob on 7/5/13Birchmere - Alexandria

The Birchmere was a fantastic venue. Isbell came on after a performance from 'Widowspeak'. He was funny, but quite serious his set list was phenomenal. Played quite a bit of his new album, several from his past, and even threw in the majority of his DBT hits. Unforgettable evening.

    Jason Isbell at The Birchmere

by FatFriendFred on 7/5/13Birchmere - Alexandria

Jason Isbell is one of the best Americana songwriters working today. If you haven't seen one of his solo shows or a show with his band (the 400 Unit) you are doing yourself a major disservice.

    Perfect except for opener

by sndOnTuesday on 7/4/13Birchmere - Alexandria

Unbelievable sound and songwriting. Favorite artist by far so I'm biased. Food at the venue is mediocre at best. And everything is expensive. Those negatives only equate to a 1 star reduction as the overall experience and sound is positive.

    Jason Isbell at Taft Ballroom

    by qwertyqwerty8765 on 11/5/12Taft Theatre - Cincinnati

Jas Isbell (and the 400 Unit) was excellent, no letdown with the artist. It was my first trip to Taft Ballroom, which is in the basement of the Taft Theater. There are no seats, so it is great for dancing, not so great if you just want to sit and listen. They do offer a full bar, so the adult beverages make it a little easier to take. Ticket prices are very reasonable. A good place to catch up-and-coming acts up close.

Way More Than Your Money's Worth

    by bgmiller5 on 11/5/12Taft Theatre - Cincinnati

I won't try to pretend this isn't a biased review; I love Jason Isbell's music. Not only his music, but also the music that influences him that he sometimes incorporates into his set-lists or songs. Until you see a band live, it can be tricky to tell from their recordings just how produced their records are or how good of a musician they really are. From his playing with DBT, including the songs he wrote and recorded with them, I figured he was pretty good. Without a doubt, Isbell is the real deal. He carried every tune damn-near flawlessly, and played not only the crowd's favorites but slipped in a couple of his own favorites as well. Even some of his songs I was unfamiliar with, which for some artists playing live can become a drag, were as enjoyable as the ones I knew by heart. His band the 400 Unit is also very good (he even let his drummer sing a couple songs), and his 'feyonce' Amanda Shires provided awesome fiddle playing (as well as - respectfully - something visually aesthetic). Overall, a great show at a great venue. I hope I can do it again very soon.
