About Jamey Johnson

Chart-topping country music artist Jamey Johnson has hit songs to spare. As a songwriter, he's penned No. 1's for artists like Trace Adkins and George Strait, but it's his award-winning solo material that has earned him his latest batch of honors. His fourth studio album, 2012's Living For A Song: A Tribute to Hank Cochran, peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, garnering praise from critics and a Grammy nomination for Best Country Album. Born in Alabama, Johnson set his sights on music after seeing his idol Alan Jackson perform live in concert. After eight years of service in the US Marine Corps, he moved to Nashville and began writing songs and performing in small clubs. His 2006 major label debut The Dollar landed in the Top 20 of the Country Albums chart, paving the way for similar successes with The Lonesome Song in 2008 and The Guitar Song in 2010. Johnson gained an even bigger following in 2011 as an opening act on Kid Rock’s Born Free Tour, which introduced him to a new group of ticket buyers. At his 2013 live shows, Johnson treated fans to his stripped-down, honest approach to country, building anticipation for his 2014 tour.

Jamey Johnson in Concert

One look at Jamey Johnson should be enough to tell you he’s a guy who doesn’t mess around. With his prodigious beard, burly frame, and take-no-guff bearing, he seems like he could have been a bouncer in another life instead of a killer country singer/songwriter. And when he’s on stage, Johnson doesn’t waste a second showing off, he just stands his ground and bears down on the songs, focusing in with laser-like precision on exactly what’s necessary to wring the maximum impact and emotion out of hits like “In Color” and “High Cost of Living” without resorting to even the tiniest amount of excess. When you go to a Jamey Johnson show, you leave knowing you’ve seen the real deal when it comes to modern-day outlaw country.

Jamey Johnson Background

Jamey Johnson exploded onto the country music scene in the 2000s as a man who’d taken up the mantle of outlaw country icons like Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson and added his own imprint to bring it up to date. Born in Alabama, Johnson eventually made his way to Nashville, where he slogged it out in the honky-tonks and learned his trade the old-school way. When he first began to break through, he did it mostly as a writer for other artists, like Trace Adkins, whose hit “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” came from Johnson’s pen. Johnson found his first taste of success with the title track from his 2006 album The Dollar, but two years later he emerged with a more raw, idiosyncratic sound on That Lonesome Song and earned a Platinum record for his efforts. Ever since then, Johnson’s rich, deep pipes and no-nonsense tunes have been speaking in a major way to listeners who value classic country style but still want something new.

    Jamie Johnson

by maegen on 8/31/10Billy Bob's - Fort Worth

This concert was so boring. First we did not have good seats, a post was in front of us which did not show up on seating diagram. More or less it was like we were at a Waylon Jennings concert. He sang more of other peoples songs than he did his own.

    Jamey Johnson Concert SUCKED

    by liltig75 on 8/29/10Billy Bob's - Fort Worth

The acoustics were horrible. There was way to much bass and u could not tell what he was saying when he talked or sang. And why was he singing other peoples songs? Thought he had enough of his own. Guess not. Bout half way thru me and all my friends left and went somewhere else. I hate that I wasted the money. But at least now I know. I definately will not be going back for any other concerts. Good to know now before I had purchased tickets for anything else. Did not think this event even rated one star. It was pitifull.

    Great Show!

    by MikeS2046 on 8/29/10Billy Bob's - Fort Worth

I am a huge Jamey Johnson fan and this was the first time I have seen him live, it definetely will not be the last! He stayed on stage for over 2 hours and had everyone into the concert until the final song ended! He played a lot of good covers and his hits, and a ton of new stuff! He is a great musician and hopefully can get country music back on the right track! It would have been a 5 star rating if Billy Bob's had a better sound system. For a place that has so many concerts they at least owe that to the patrons. Jamey is great though, I would highly recommend seeing him!

Jamey Johnson, our generations Hank Williams

by Peek on 8/29/10Billy Bob's - Fort Worth

Many people have considered Kris Kristofferson one of the greatest song writers in the past 50 years. I would equate Jamey Johnson with Kris and add to it his tremendous voice. Hearing his magnificent ability on his recordings brought me to want to see him live. Seeing and hearing him perform live convinced me he is one of a kind. I am a fan of the great voices in the industry. The classics if you will that include Don Williams, George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and many others. I believe Jamey Johnson will be considered as an equal within a short period of time. The show drew somewhat long with the hour long tributes he adds to his own list of great songs. His delivery of great perfromances by the like of Bob Seger, Don Williams, Willie Nelson, and many others was right on. The only song I felt he fell short on was The Chair by George Stright. His small band made the sound feel full and Jamey's talent showed through with his guitar as well. Billy Bob's is a unique setting for almost any entertainer. People are in honky tonk setting, free to rome and easily distracted. Not a concert setting at all. While I believe Jamey Johnson could use some refining in the showmanship category, I would expect he wouldn't go along with it. He shows up, plays and sings and does it the way he wants. The rest of us are just lucky enough to be there to witness it all.

    Jamey Johnson was fantastic!

    by joles76 on 8/28/10Billy Bob's - Fort Worth

This was a wonderful concert. Mr. Johnson sang songs from his new album, (that I can't wait to purchase), his oldies, and a variety of covers. The crowd was engaged and rollicking. The surprise guest appearance by Randy Houser was very exciting. Definitely recommend.

Absolutely phenomenal concert! Our fourth time to see Jamey perform, still just as awe striking as the first time I heard cowboy strum the steel and heard "I was just a normal guy..."

    Amazing Voice!

by Zooey98 on 8/9/10Val Air Ballroom - West Des Moines

Jamey Johnson has one of the best voices ever. The only "bad" thing about the concert was that we sat off to the side at the tables for the first half and it was hard to understand what he was singing. Once we moved down to the floor he sounded so much better. I would definatley see him in concert again.

    Jamey Johnson was disappointing

by 0GrlNxtDoor0 on 8/9/10Val Air Ballroom - West Des Moines

Very disappointing show, most of the show Jamey played songs from his new album that no one has heard...was looking forward to hearing music that are on his older albums. Songs we know. Also, what was the deal with no camera's?

Great concert; kickin it old style

by concertjunkie2 on 8/8/10Val Air Ballroom - West Des Moines

Great concert. Great small venue and great acoustics. He played for nearly 2 1/2 hours and took no breaks! He did play large blocsk of his new music and it would have been nice to have a few more older songs that we all knew thrown in every few songs. Can't wait for his new CD to come out, it should be GREAT. Beer prices were steep at this concert - $5 tallboys. Hope he comes back to Iowa soon. Great to have another old school, rebel country singer back on the scene.

    Songs seemed to drag on!

by jbj96 on 8/6/10Val Air Ballroom - West Des Moines

It was great to see Jamey Johnson in person and be so close to the stage, but it seemed as if some of his songs just kept dragging on and on. And he sings so close to the microphone, that half the time you couldn't even understand what he was singing/lyrics.

    Jamey Johnson was excellent

by Plumpy6990 on 8/6/10Val Air Ballroom - West Des Moines

If you want a lesson in country music, this is the show you gotta see. No politics or complaining, just music. Great covers of songs I hadn't heard in years. The band was dead on. The opener was great too.

Jamey Johnson - Between Jennings and Jones??

by Crown77 on 8/6/10Val Air Ballroom - West Des Moines

Jamey is a great song writer and an outstanding singer. He needs a little help on the entertainer role. The show last night was much longer than I expected, so you could say we got our money's worth. Trouble is, half the crowd had left or at least gone back and sat down before the best part of the show happened. Jamey is a very likeable performer, but needs to show a little more concern for the fan base and liven up the show a bit. Realizing his song base is emerging, doing a few replays of Haggard, Jones, Jennings, Cash or Nelson would have been well received by the crowd. I would have gladly traded a few replays of old favorites sung the Johnson way for some of the 18 different slow melodies that bored the audience to departure during the middle of the show.
