About Jamey Johnson

Chart-topping country music artist Jamey Johnson has hit songs to spare. As a songwriter, he's penned No. 1's for artists like Trace Adkins and George Strait, but it's his award-winning solo material that has earned him his latest batch of honors. His fourth studio album, 2012's Living For A Song: A Tribute to Hank Cochran, peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, garnering praise from critics and a Grammy nomination for Best Country Album. Born in Alabama, Johnson set his sights on music after seeing his idol Alan Jackson perform live in concert. After eight years of service in the US Marine Corps, he moved to Nashville and began writing songs and performing in small clubs. His 2006 major label debut The Dollar landed in the Top 20 of the Country Albums chart, paving the way for similar successes with The Lonesome Song in 2008 and The Guitar Song in 2010. Johnson gained an even bigger following in 2011 as an opening act on Kid Rock’s Born Free Tour, which introduced him to a new group of ticket buyers. At his 2013 live shows, Johnson treated fans to his stripped-down, honest approach to country, building anticipation for his 2014 tour.

Jamey Johnson in Concert

One look at Jamey Johnson should be enough to tell you he’s a guy who doesn’t mess around. With his prodigious beard, burly frame, and take-no-guff bearing, he seems like he could have been a bouncer in another life instead of a killer country singer/songwriter. And when he’s on stage, Johnson doesn’t waste a second showing off, he just stands his ground and bears down on the songs, focusing in with laser-like precision on exactly what’s necessary to wring the maximum impact and emotion out of hits like “In Color” and “High Cost of Living” without resorting to even the tiniest amount of excess. When you go to a Jamey Johnson show, you leave knowing you’ve seen the real deal when it comes to modern-day outlaw country.

Jamey Johnson Background

Jamey Johnson exploded onto the country music scene in the 2000s as a man who’d taken up the mantle of outlaw country icons like Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson and added his own imprint to bring it up to date. Born in Alabama, Johnson eventually made his way to Nashville, where he slogged it out in the honky-tonks and learned his trade the old-school way. When he first began to break through, he did it mostly as a writer for other artists, like Trace Adkins, whose hit “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” came from Johnson’s pen. Johnson found his first taste of success with the title track from his 2006 album The Dollar, but two years later he emerged with a more raw, idiosyncratic sound on That Lonesome Song and earned a Platinum record for his efforts. Ever since then, Johnson’s rich, deep pipes and no-nonsense tunes have been speaking in a major way to listeners who value classic country style but still want something new.

    9th time seeing them play

by JJsBiggestFan on 9/21/10The National - Richmond

As always Jamey and the band put a great show. He played everthing from the Longsome Song to his new release the Guitar Song along with songs by Waylon, Vern, and Hank. I have never been disappoint at any show of his. Afterwards we talk to the band members, Wayde, Rowdy, and Cowboy. Jamey was on a tight schedule so he was not able to do a meet in greet. That was ok I got pics with the other band members and had a great conversation. Can't wait until we get to see him again.

    Jamey Johnson GREAT

by sbsnbnva on 9/21/10The National - Richmond

His show was great. He played for over 2 hours! I enjoyed the show. There were no special effects just him at the microphone with his band playing with him. He is a true artist, and he plays real country music! I am glad I got to see him at a smaller venue and not a huge coliseum.

    Jamey Johnson was amazing!

    by Angieg1972 on 9/21/10The National - Richmond

First time I have ever been to the National in Richmond, VA and it was amazing. The staff was friendly. The concert was AMAZING! Jamey was just being Jamey. Nothing too fancy stage wise, which was refreshing. No need to have anything else try to make his concert any better than just him, the band, and a microphone.

    Jamey Johnson was ahhhhmazing!

by BGrl on 9/21/10The National - Richmond

His voice is strong...reminiscent of classic country entertainers. As the song goes, somewhere between Jennings and Jones. He is a no-frills singer-songwriter who you must see to appreciate.

    Jamey vs Chris H.

by Ticketholder72 on 9/20/10Embassy Theatre - Fort Wayne

Jamey has an awesome voice but is a little boring as a stage presence. Without the band or his opening act (Chris Hennesy, who rocked the house) it would have not been worth the $$$ or time. He actually livened up a little when he wasn't playing his own songs.?????What's up with that??????? And does he ever allow pics?

    Not enough JJ songs played

by JJFAN38 on 9/20/10Embassy Theatre - Fort Wayne

Wanted to hear more JJ songs played. Not so many cover songs from the old days - Did not play "In Color", "Between Jennings and Jones", Mown down the roses"... Great voice, but thought he might have lost a few fans... DId not do an encore either...

    Amazing voice

by FreezeLaura on 9/20/10Embassy Theatre - Fort Wayne

We really enjoyed the concert. Jamie's voice and the guy that opened for him were really great. It was awesome to hear all the great classics played live in all their glory. The disappointing part was that Jamie rarely talked or showed any personality. He also didn't play the pictures song, that's his only number 1, it would be like hank not doing country boy. He also didn't do an encore. The embassy was a great place to see him and the sounds were great. The audience was very disrespectful in following the rules of no photography and they were spilling beer everywhere.

    Jamey was over rated!

by MKBikerChick on 9/20/10Embassy Theatre - Fort Wayne

'The evening started with much excitement, but as the evening progressed, Johnson mumbled, and guartist Wayne took center stage. And to top it all off, Johnson became aggreviated and exited the stage after playing ZZ TOP, Bog Segar and never played his award winning IN COLOR. The venue was beautiful and handled the music well, but the artist was lacking. The crowd called out for his hits and he ignored the requests. He was overrated for the performance he delivered. And to top it off, the concert was postponed from June which wrecked havoc on schedules for those paying customers excited about seeing what could be one of Nashvilles rising stars. But in my eyes, this star's glow tarnished with the lack of play of his known hits!

    Still a fan, but dissapointing

I still like his music, but after he didn't play his most popular songs I wasn't so excited about the concert anymore.

    Jamey Johnson at Embassy

by lep32 on 9/19/10Embassy Theatre - Fort Wayne

The venue was great! Jamey Johnson's performance with his band and friend was awesome. I was a bit disappointed that he only played one of his known songs, everything else was from his new album that had just come out during the same week and some general music. I would have LOVED to have heard some of the songs he wrote (Give it Away) sung by him and a few of his hits. But his band is absolutely amazing to watch whether you like country music or not. You can appreciate how talented they are no matter what you like. And Jamey's voice is so almost comforting to me. LOVE the "old" style country sound!

    Jamey Johnson was awesome!!

by elle2125 on 9/19/10Embassy Theatre - Fort Wayne

We really enjoyed the show!! We had a few complaints, one was it was really crowded and it became so uncomfortable at one point that we gave our close seats and went and sat in the back where it wasn't so bad! Ther other disappointment was Jamey didn't sing the song that made him famous, "In Color". Other than that, I would go see him again in a heartbeat...
