About

James Taylor in Concert

James Taylor is the archetypal singer/songwriter, who helped create the template for the troubadour style that dominated the 1970s. And when he brings his blend of folk, pop, rock, and soul influences to the stage, it's like a part of history is unfolding before the crowd, with enough tuneful energy to generate some major good-time vibes. The five-time Grammy-winning, multi-platinum songsmith offered up tracks like "Fire and Rain" and "You've Got a Friend" to the collective pop-cultural consciousness in the '70s, and they've stayed there ever since. Of course, he's continued to make compelling music for many decades, and his shows are a grab bag of transfixing new tunes and beloved classics. Taylor's 2018 tour with his All-Star Band (not to be confused with Ringo Starr's similarly named group) also shows how much a crew of world-class players can bring to a classic catalog. Some of the most renowned musicians on the planet lend their talents to the band, including drumming god Steve Gadd, hotshot jazz pianist Kevin Hays, legendary saxman Lou Marini, and more.

James Taylor Background

James Taylor was born in Boston, but moved to North Carolina a few years later, and the bucolic settings of his childhood eventually informed the pastoral side of his songwriting in a major way. He learned guitar in his adolescence, soaking up folk and blues influences before hitting the coffeehouse circuit in the '60s. Before too long he was in Greenwich Village fronting a band called The Flying Machine, but he soon emerged as a solo singer/songwriter. His 1970 album ‘Sweet Baby James' became a game-changer for the whole '70s music scene. Alongside the likes of Carole King and Joni Mitchell, Taylor epitomized the thoughtful, acoustic-based ballad style that came to dominate the era, and ubiquitous hits like "Fire and Rain" and "Country Road" were central to that style. In later years Taylor showed his versatility by scoring smash singles with covers of R&B tunes like Marvin Gaye's "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" and Jimmy Jones' '50s hit "Handyman," and Taylor has never stopped finding fresh ways to bring his work to the huge audience that's been addicted to his music for decades.

    Extra-excellent

by MilliePat on 6/7/10Gwinnett Arena - Atlanta

First concert of the year and I was not disappointed. Considering the large arena, I heard excellent sound from the singers and band. Taylor and King gave the best concert, that I've experienced in ten years.

Classic music by performers who care

by MisterCrayfish on 6/6/10The Arena At Gwinnett Center - Atlanta

I really loved the Atlanta-area concert of Carole King and James Taylor. They and their bandmates played with care and conviction, as if they were playing their famous hits for the first time, rather than for the thousandth. Carole and James sound great together, and it was wonderful to see how generously each of them performed on the other's songs.

    so glad I saw them

by msweed on 6/6/10The Arena At Gwinnett Center - Atlanta

I can't remember ever enjoying a concert more. The setup of the stage, the screens allowing closeups, pictures adding to the music, the love and emotion that was obvious on stage, and of course mostly the music of those two - the best!

    Troubadour Reunion

by Scruffin on 6/6/10The Arena At Gwinnett Center - Atlanta

From the moment they appeared in the wings as they walked to the stage, I knew the evening would be wonderful. That set the tone for the entire evening. The magic between these two performers was so special to see. I watched Carole's face on the big screen all evening. Her face was just lit up. I'll be honest, my husband and I are huge James Taylor fans and we went basically to see him. Carole was a wonderful bonus. The energy she had on stage was contagious. They shared the spotlight equally, kicking in harmonies as they went. The little stories between the songs were a great window to the past for all of us who weren't able to be there live in the 70s. We could have listened to those wonderful old songs all night. We had great seats and the sound was wonderful in the Gwinnett Arena. I loved the concert in the round - a much more intimate setting than an end stage. Having their original musicians was just the ticket - everyone on the stage was having the best time. The arena was packed! I would highly recommend this concert.

    A Blast from the Past

by froggy22 on 6/6/10The Arena At Gwinnett Center - Atlanta

When JT and CK took the stage, I felt like I was transported back in time. The music was excellent . . . what impressed me the most was how humble that both James Taylor and Carol King appeared to be. At the beginning of the show, JT seemed to be "shy" and stumbled a bit over the introduction to his first song. It didn't take long for the Atlanta crowd to let them know the impact they have made on so many lives. I forgot just how many songs that CK wrote. I did not realize how funny JT is . . . on the way home, we talked about how awesome it would be to sit down with them and chat over a beer. We went out and bought 3 of their CDs today . . . to take on a trip out west. I can't believe that they got so many amazing artists to tour with them!!!

Carole King & James Taylor - Show for the ages!

by SullyCuse on 6/6/10The Arena At Gwinnett Center - Atlanta

I have been a HUGE James Taylor fan for years, and one of Bucket List items was to see JT live. Since Carole King was playing with him, I thought this would be a nice added bonus. I must say, Ms. King and Mr. Taylor, OVER DELIVERED on their performances. They were truly spectacular! Also, there is not enough superlative words that can be used for their backing musicians and singers. They were all FANTASTIC. If you get a chance to go see the Troubadour Reunion, run, don't walk.. You will be THRILLED!

    GREAT CONCERT

by doright on 6/5/10The Arena At Gwinnett Center - Atlanta

The concert even exceeded my expectations. The arena was a good venue; we were able to experience the show even though our seats were "in the nosebleed section". The staff were cordial and helpful. The acoustics were excellent. The rotating stage was a nice feature. The performances were superb.Carol and James still have that special quality that i enjoyed at an earlier age and they put on an outstanding show. It was good to see the original band members and they were so very good. I hated for it to end!

    Once In a Lifetime

by siegeld on 6/5/10The Arena At Gwinnett Center - Atlanta

DO NOT miss the chance to see this tour. The chemistry between JT, Carole, Leland Sklar, Danny Kortchmar, Russ Kunkel, and the other amazing musicians that filled the stage was truly remarkable. Truly an All Star line-up. While there must have been almost 10,000 fans JT made it incredibly intimate with his constant dialogue. JT's singing, playing and delivery were better than ever, While Carole's voice may have had an easier time hitting some of the notes 30 years ago, her soul, song writing and musicianship made it an engaging and enjoyable show. They both showed their diversity in style with slow balads, rock n roll, blues and even a little jazzy number thrown in. The song writing on display was incomparable. I was moist from the start. This show made me laugh, cry, dance, sing, shout, whistle and mostly remember. And while I'm in my 40s, I was one of the youngest people in the audience. Also must add that the stage, lighting, sound, screens, and video were all top notch as well..

    It was magic

by DrDan on 6/5/10The Arena At Gwinnett Center - Atlanta

James Taylor and Carole King brought joy to their entire audience. Both JT and Carole King seemed genuinely happy to be performing and song after song had the audience on their feet. Several hours and three encores later...a very happy audience filed out the Gwinnett Arena. It was the best concert I have ever been to....and I have been to a lot.

    Troubadour Reunion: James Taylor/Carole King

by ungersu on 6/5/10The Arena At Gwinnett Center - Atlanta

This was a once in a lifetime concert. Both performers were amazing. Not to mention the supporting musicians. Very cool to hear the original band members. Steamroller was one of the best songs of the night. The sound was amazing, never too loud or too soft. Lighting was great. The stage was very cool -- always rotating so that everyone had a chance to see James and Carole play straight to them (very fair). Legendary musicians and great night. Well worth the price of the ticket.
