The opening "act" who call themselves, "Mimicking Birds" were so thoroughly boring and monotone that I started nodding off by the 3rd song. I probably would have fallen asleep if it were not for the drummer who at one point grabbed his microphone and caused it to feedback sharply. It woke me up (temporarily). I was glad when they left the stage. When Jakob Dylan took the stage, I wasn't expecting it to be a raucous affair, but I was at least hoping for some energy to flow. Sadly, it did not. The stage was filled with talented musicians that seemed to be half asleep most of the time. It was listless, lifeless and thoroughly un-enjoyable. By mid show we had had enough. We walked out (along with several other people who were just as disappointed). Don't get me wrong, I dig JD (and Neco too but she needs to dump Kelly Hogan) but it felt like more of a rehearsal than a performance. And not a very productive one at that.
The music and performance by Jakob Dylan and company was extraordinary. I have listened to the current album many times on a good stereo system and I am quite familiar with the music. But, the sound in the theater was not good. I don't think they had a mixing board - as the vocal was buried in the mix. And to top it all off it was TOO LOUD.
interesting experience...perhaps it's the acoustics at wilbur, or perhaps my ears were playing tricks on me, but for most of time, the performance seemed to be a battle between the vocals and the band
Save for those who were expecting more from Neko Case than just singing back up, Jakob Dylan played a nice set. I like the country influence. And the man's resemblance to his dad at his age is scary.
The concert was great, BUT everybody there wanted more Neko! She has way too much talent to be relegated to a backup singer. Should have thrown in a few Neko songs for sure - and let her play guitar too!
I was there to see Neko Case and very sad that she was basically a backup singer. Jacob Dylan is talented no doubt but his voice was very mono toned, when he incorporated the talent of Kelly Hogan and Ms. Case it was amazing, but this only happened only on a few songs. T-Bone Burnett(?) does great collaborations but I felt this was less of a collaboration and more Jacob Dylan trying for a come back album. The musicians were extremely talented however I left slightly disappointed.
It was nice to get a songwriters insight into the making of an album but it did not include any live performance which really made the evening a kind of disappointment.
Although initially reserved, Jakob Dylan relaxed about 20 minutes into the interview and was funny and somewhat more relaxed as things progressed. A warm intimate gathering. Excellent venue.
This small 200 seat theater was the perfect setup for Jakob Dylan. Usually on stage he's a little stiff and impersonal. Here he was relaxed, funny, and gave thoughtful answers to questions from the audience. It was an interview setup so we only got to hear the new songs recorded. It would have been nice if he had played just one song. Even without backup it would've been good.
Although I had no idea what to expect, never having been to one of these "Album Drops" before........I absolutely enjoyed being there! Jakob was really down to Earth. When asked about his writing style, his life growing up "in the business", how his songs come to him, etc.......he prefers being "real", rather than giving people the answers they might have expected. I truly respect that. Besides, his new "album" (I guess we still call them that) is REALLY GOOD !!!
