Jakob, Neko, and Kelly were awesome!

by RockinCowgirl on 5/2/10Fitzgerald Theater - St Paul

I saw Jakob Dylan at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, MN. His touring band, Three Legs, was mostly Neko Case's band. I'm a huge Neko fan, seen her own show a few times. They were awesome, as usual. Musically, they were right on, even better than Jakob's band on the cd. I was wondering how Neko and Kelly Hogan would work as backup singers, since their voices are so powerful. Jakob did have to turn his mic up a bit to match them. But after that, it was perfect. They covered all the songs from Women and Country, a couple from Jakob's first solo cd, Seeing Things and a couple Wallflowers tunes. There was something here for everyone who enjoys real music. Even my mother, who's more into country than folk/rock, loved it. About the only people who wouldn't enjoy it is techno/electronica fans.

    Dylan show not so good

by Anonymous on 4/28/10Fitzgerald Theater - St Paul

Show started at 7:30, Simpy warm up band played 25 minutes. Dylan came on at 9:00. Sound not great- Case and Hogan's voices somewhat lost. Dylan himself sounded OK- has some good songs. Could improve rapport with audience. Came out complaining about someone in the front row doing something he didn't like... ?? The album is really good, though, and a deal at ten bucks.

    Jakob Dylan

by PriorLake on 4/28/10Fitzgerald Theater - St Paul

The concert was good. The opening act could have done a better job getting the crowd going. They were good - but not energizing. Dylan is a real talent. I would have also liked to hear a little more from his Wallflowers portfolio but he was good. Great background singers.

    Jakob Dylan at Park West

by eadgbguy on 4/27/10Park West - Chicago

Fantastic show. He establishes a great connection with the audience early, and you can clearly tell that he and his entire band are having fun delivering their music. His overall humility was displayed by the inclusion of two Wallflowers hits in the set, as well. I was really impressed.

    Lyrics key..

    by Stever1 on 4/27/10Park West - Chicago

With Jacob, it's all about the lyrics. He is a gifted writer. Consequently, his low voice and a subpar sound system made it difficult to fully enjoy. His guitarists came through loud and clear....and they were excellent. There could have been a little more featured Neko......she should have done at least one of her songs. And Jacob should cover one of his favorite Bob songs, it could only add to a festive evening. A good show, nonetheless.

Good show. Wish Neko Case could have snuck a song or two in though...

Jakob Dylan a bit of a snore

by ChillyInBed on 4/27/10Park West - Chicago

Jakob Dylan did not bring his A Game. He apparently did bring some junior high garage band to open though. And while these pre-pubescents could carry a tune, they needed a little rhythm to breathe life into that dreadfully somatic-bordering-on-flat-lining performance. When Dylan and crew woke up and realized it was (past) time to put on a show, the crowd was a little lost. I like his albums, but any redemption for this mediocre show came from back-up singer Neko Case. There should have been much more of her. I was eager to hear Dylan's foray into alternative country territory. But adding a few more twangs to Wallflower songs hardly cut it. Sadly, a lot of talent doing a lot of nothing.

    not neko

by mikeystrikes on 4/25/10town hall - ny

that is not Neko Case on the album cover. and it's not as if the show was a double bill, Neko and Kelly were background singers, just as they were on the album.

    Jakob, Neko & Kelly Rocked!

by DylanGirl98 on 4/23/10Rams Head Live! - Baltimore

Seriously, I've seen Jakob a few times now, with The Wallflowers and without, and this show was the best ever. They played a good selection from the new album, Women & Country, that actually has made the album better for me, added character and dimension. They also did a couple Wallflowers songs, but with a twist since the girls (Neko Case & Kelly Hogan) were there to sing along. I'm actually going to this show two nights in a row, that's how much I loved it. And, I do have Neko's latest album, Middle Cyclone, and she has such a clear, beautiful voice, that if you like Jakob you'll like her. Plus, I'm going to look into this Kelly Hogan because she really carried her share of the vocals beautifully.

We (4 of us) expected some synergy between two talents -- but nothing. Dylan hardly acknowledged Neko's existence and there was zero chemistry between them. Jakob, why not share a slice of the spotlight with Neko? Even the photo in this review panel sends the same message; Neko's face is hidden behind Dylan. The sound was muddy and the reverb overwhelmed the vocals. Overall, a perfunctory performance.

    Great Show!

by mikeystrikes on 4/22/10Town Hall - New York

It was a great show in great seats. Jakob Dylan may not be his Dad, but he is better than most performers out there today.

JDylan with Neko Case and Kelly (Hidden) Hogan

by NaNui on 4/22/10Town Hall - New York

No joy. Why were the singers never closer than 10 feet apart?? Neko performed like a very talented back-up singer, no more, and Kelly was invisible/ignored. Are these guys all mad at eachother?

    Young Dylan with a Twang

by DrBobintheBronx on 4/22/10Town Hall - New York

Like his father, Jakob Dylan has picked up a decided country twang with the new album because of the pedal steel guitar, the the result is very enjoyable. Neko Case and Kelly Hogan also add a new dimension to the band. Neko's orange hair is hard to miss but it her unique voice that brings strength to the mix. The sound in the loge seating was a bit garbled but it could not diminish what was an excellent concert.

    Jakob Dylan at Town Hall

by LeDiamantFou on 4/22/10Town Hall - New York

As for the performance and energy, Jakob Dylan was incredible. I could not decide if his voice sounds exactly the same if not better live. All performers were incredibly talented and happy to be performing - overall an unforgettable performance. Unfortunately, my only complaint is that the staff at Town Hall were incredibly rude. I have been to a number of concert, multiple concerts at Town Hall as I live in New York, and never before was I met with such smugness except for that night. As the crowd was calm and there purely to listen to the music, this was really shocking. Aside from the man who took my ticket, everyone was nasty for absolutely no reason.
