Jake Shimabukuro on Tour

In a way, it’s Hawaiian ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro’s live performances that first brought him international attention — in 2006, Shimabukuro’s success skyrocketed after a video of him playing The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” became one of YouTube’s first massively viral videos. Ever since, he’s shared his joy of music with audiences all over the world, playing songs that range from jazz and classical to rock and bluegrass. Before he blew up, Shimabukuro was signed to a label in Japan and toured the country extensively. After starting his own label and playing more U.S. shows, he’s appeared on a number of talk shows with hosts like Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel and Carson Daly. Now, Shimabukuro tours the world frequently, often leading a versatile string trio that includes guitar and bass, though he’s also been known to groove in a quartet with drums, keys and bass. Jake Shimabukuro’s current tour takes him across the U.S. as he continues to find new ways to interact with the styles that have made him the musician he is today.

Jake Shimabukuro in Concert

Jake Shimabukuro is a Hawaiian-born, fifth-generation Japanese American ukulele player who has become known as a virtuoso musician that can jam in almost any style. Born in 1976 in Honolulu, Shimabukuro received a ukulele from his mother, a musician herself, at age four. He studied with her for years, eventually entering the Roy Sakuma Studio and taking lessons from Tami Akiyami. In the 1990s, Shimabukuro would become a member of the trio Pure Heart alongside percussionist Lopaka Colón and guitarist and singer Jon Yamasato. The group’s first album, 1999’s Pure Heart, won four Na Hoku Hanohano awards — basically the Hawaiian Grammys — including Contemporary Album of the Year, Most Promising Artist, Album of the Year and Favorite Entertainment of the Year.

Shimabukuro signed with Epic Records International, a division of Sony Music Japan, in 2002. He toured in Japan and released a number of Japan-only albums. Wanting to share his music with the U.S. as well, Shimabukuro founded Hitchhike Records and soon released 2005’s Dragon, which charted at No. 5 on Billboard’s Top World Music Albums. The following year, after his YouTube success, he released Gently Weeps, which peaked at No. 2 on the Top World Music Albums. Shimabukuro has gone on to release numerous high-charting albums.

  • A fun evening with a master

by Okaasan on 8/12/24Barrymore Theatre - MadisonRating: 5 out of 5

Jake Shimabukuro is one of the most amazing musicians I've heard. He can turn his ukulele into a Japanese harp, a guitar, a drum, and, of course, a ukulele and probably many more fascinating permutations of sound. Besides that, he is charming, amusing and enthusiastic. This was a great, fun evening with a true master of his instrument. Think the Yngwie Malmsteen or Eddie Van Halen of ukulele. And getting a crowd of older music lovers to join in on a spirited rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody is the cherry on the cake. Love Jake, love his music, can't wait for his next album (and tour?)!

  • a feel good concert

Jake really knows how to ukulele. He is so engagingi with the audience. Man, that guy's fingers just fly around that ukulele. I just don't know how he coaches so many different sounds from his instrument.. the comcert was so much fun.

Beautiful venue, beautiful evening. Jake Shimabukuro was absolutely incredible in his virtuosity as well as his graciousness. I thought we were just seeing him but what a happy surprise that we got to hear all the other amazing musicians!

  • Surprise meet and greet

by Concert goer on 7/2/24Blue Note Summer Sessions - NapaRating: 5 out of 5

I have been wanting to see Jake in concert ever since I saw his PBS special. Finally got to go and enjoy the show with my family and what a beautiful venue for an amazing concert. My son and I were pleasantly surprised that he would have a meet and greet session after the concert and we were so appreciative for the opportunity to meet him and have him sign some memorabilia! He was so sweet and encouraging of my son!

  • Amazing Uker

by Leah on 7/2/24Blue Note Summer Sessions - NapaRating: 5 out of 5

Jake Shimabukuro is the world's best ukulele musician, and his friends who play with him are top notch musicians. The concert in Napa was wonderful and I can't wait to see him there next year.

  • The Jake,Henry and Jeff Show at Meritage Napa

by Dan on 7/2/24Blue Note Summer Sessions - NapaRating: 5 out of 5

The venue was fabulous! Perfect weather. Fabulous sound system. Good booths offering snacks and drinks. Parking not a problem. Getting through the security then ticketing check points fast and easy. Good/helpful ushers. The event was a total success. Kudos to the Blue Note peeps for their hard work in making this an effortless and enjoyable time. And of course Jake was his normal unbelievable, talented, remarkable self and took us all through some jaw dropping numbers. It was good to see Henry Kapono and the other fellows who played with Jake were incredible too. Jeff Peterson is an entity unto himself and sorry I forget the keyboard and bassist but they too were quite good. We had a WONderful time!!

  • Great show

by Bill B on 7/2/24Blue Note Summer Sessions - NapaRating: 5 out of 5

The Blue Note Jazz Club hosts a summer series of concerts at the Meritage Resort in Napa, CA. In early June I caught George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, then this past Saturday saw Jake Shimabukuro and friends. Both were amazing shows in different genres. The venue seats approximately 500+ people with plenty of dancing space in back. Food and drinks available (albeit expensive). Catch a show there, if you, can.

  • MOST GRACIOUS AND BRILLIANT MUSICIANS EVER!

by JLN on 7/2/24Blue Note Summer Sessions - NapaRating: 5 out of 5

Jake Shimabukuro, Jeff Peterson and Henry Kopono are stunning musicians. All three of them are at the top of their game. Jake makes an engaging host drawing the audience into a warm and inviting atmosphere. The evening was well balanced in terms of a variety of songs and playing styles. It was also fortunate to have Henry Kopono. singing songs to lend variety to what would have been a purely instrumental event. Finally, all three are not only masterful at their craft but, are also kind and loving people who obviously enjoy both the audience but each other as well. It was a powerful performance and one I will always keep in my heart.

  • Great Show -- except for the phone photo taking

by Man About Town on 7/2/24Blue Note Summer Sessions - NapaRating: 5 out of 5

Jake is a worldclass performer! He put on a great show at a lovely venue. The only downside was people blocking my view while they took photos and videos with their phones.

  • been following since he started with Colon

by hapado on 7/2/24Blue Note Summer Sessions - NapaRating: 3 out of 5

Disappointing. Nothing unique. Recycling of old stuff and constant compliments to the other musicians. A no soul concert. Plus very uncomfortable seating and the parking was quite a distance from the venue with no cross walks and a raised island to navigate, and no lighting. My wife has mobility issues, tripped and sprained her ankle. We also were forced to dodge spending cars. Probably will never go to another event there.

  • Awesome

by Pam on 7/2/24Blue Note Summer Sessions - NapaRating: 5 out of 5

Jake was amazing. The concert was over the top with Jake, Henry, and Jeff. Loved the addition of the keyboard and guitar. Great venue.

Like Watching a Maui Sunset. That's how I feel when I am at a Jake's concert. His show are both musically entertaining and soulful. Thank you for stopping in Napa! It was a perfect summer evening: cooling evening breeze, beverage, and great music.

Had a great dinner and the show exceeded our expectations. From Jake to Jeff Peterson to Henry Kapono, we loved all their performances. Want to see them again! The seats though are very uncomfortable…they should invest in some new cushioned chairs!
