Jake Shimabukuro on Tour

In a way, it’s Hawaiian ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro’s live performances that first brought him international attention — in 2006, Shimabukuro’s success skyrocketed after a video of him playing The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” became one of YouTube’s first massively viral videos. Ever since, he’s shared his joy of music with audiences all over the world, playing songs that range from jazz and classical to rock and bluegrass. Before he blew up, Shimabukuro was signed to a label in Japan and toured the country extensively. After starting his own label and playing more U.S. shows, he’s appeared on a number of talk shows with hosts like Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel and Carson Daly. Now, Shimabukuro tours the world frequently, often leading a versatile string trio that includes guitar and bass, though he’s also been known to groove in a quartet with drums, keys and bass. Jake Shimabukuro’s current tour takes him across the U.S. as he continues to find new ways to interact with the styles that have made him the musician he is today.

Jake Shimabukuro in Concert

Jake Shimabukuro is a Hawaiian-born, fifth-generation Japanese American ukulele player who has become known as a virtuoso musician that can jam in almost any style. Born in 1976 in Honolulu, Shimabukuro received a ukulele from his mother, a musician herself, at age four. He studied with her for years, eventually entering the Roy Sakuma Studio and taking lessons from Tami Akiyami. In the 1990s, Shimabukuro would become a member of the trio Pure Heart alongside percussionist Lopaka Colón and guitarist and singer Jon Yamasato. The group’s first album, 1999’s Pure Heart, won four Na Hoku Hanohano awards — basically the Hawaiian Grammys — including Contemporary Album of the Year, Most Promising Artist, Album of the Year and Favorite Entertainment of the Year.

Shimabukuro signed with Epic Records International, a division of Sony Music Japan, in 2002. He toured in Japan and released a number of Japan-only albums. Wanting to share his music with the U.S. as well, Shimabukuro founded Hitchhike Records and soon released 2005’s Dragon, which charted at No. 5 on Billboard’s Top World Music Albums. The following year, after his YouTube success, he released Gently Weeps, which peaked at No. 2 on the Top World Music Albums. Shimabukuro has gone on to release numerous high-charting albums.

  • Pure Satisfaction!

by MelissaB. on 10/12/24Bijou Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

This was an awesome show! Jake Shimabukuro, an extremely talented Musician, willing to share his stage with others and compassionate for all the recent hurricane devastation in the East. Also, he took time to meet and greet each of his fans after the show. He treats each one with respect and gratitude and gives them his full attention as if they were the only one in line! That is a heart that truly loves and cares about people. I cannot say enough about Jake! He has my utmost respect. Thank you Jake for coming to Knoxville TN. We love you! Thank you to The Historic Bijou Theatre for hosting!

  • A Phenomenal Talent

by Fan on 10/12/24Bijou Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Jake is a phenomenal talent who gives a great concert. He’s also a charming and highly likable person. More people should know about him. We brought friends who had never heard of him and they were in awe. I wish we had more opportunities to see him live.

  • 3rd time

by LF on 10/12/24Bijou Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

We always leave seeing him smiling ear to ear. Sat in balcony. Maybe would have enjoyed more if on main floor. A true virtuoso!

  • Amazing concert!

by Fern on 10/12/24Bijou Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Jake Shimabukuro is a legend, it’s absolutely insane how much he shreds on a tenor ukulele. He’s also one of those rare and amazing artists that’s better live/in concert than on his records, It’s my second time seeing him in concert and both times the music and his intensity brought me to happy tears. The only negative was I think his uke was miked incorrectly so the percussive hits were very heavy and rough, but maybe that was the intention after all. It didn’t detract from the whole experience though, and Jake’s willingness to meet and greet his fans afterwards was such a nice and sweet gesture. Any chance I’ll get, I’ll be sure to see him live!

  • Perfect

by Mike on 10/12/24Bijou Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

I had a feeling it would be entertaining; but what was expected became exceptionally perfect. Jake made songs I knew become a new joy; and songs I didn’t know become new joys. A genuinely wonderful and gifted human. Met with fans after for meet, greet, pics, autographs, and many hugs. Will definitely see him again every chance I get!!

  • Fabulous Evening!

by Santa Steve on 9/17/24Sweetwater Performance Pavilion - Fort WayneRating: 5 out of 5

Jake Shimabukuro is that kind of musician that appeals to everyone! Plus he is a genuinely humble kind of guy. Plus he was backed up by the Ft Wayne Philharmonic in a perfectly subtle and powerful way. Plus he is Hawaii’s ambassador to the World, a breath of Hawaiian air to Hawaii ex-pats and makes Hawaii people proud of his incredible expertise coupled with his sincerity and his sense of humor. One of the few that stays back after his concert to personally meet every person waiting in line for hours! So yeah, totally worth it! Great job to everyone involved.

  • Ukulele Heaven

by cvroma on 9/17/24Sweetwater Performance Pavilion - Fort WayneRating: 5 out of 5

Fantastic venue, but the performance of Jake Shimabukuro and the Fort Wayne Orchestra out shown even the facilities. What can't Jake play? Wide variety of originals and classics. I highly recommend you catch his concert the next time he's in your area.

  • Unexpected Joy

by Angie on 9/17/24Sweetwater Performance Pavilion - Fort WayneRating: 5 out of 5

What a thrill to hear this first class musician and his entourage in conjunction with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic! Jake was constantly thanking all the “backstage” help for their behind the scenes work, the sign of a true professional!

  • A bit of Aloha in Alexandria

by Eric on 9/14/24Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

My wife and I loved seeing Jake at The Birchmere. The venue is one of the absolute best for seeing your favorite artists up close in an intimate performance venue. Jake's playing and choices of music were an absolute delight.

  • Amazing!

by Sue on 9/12/24Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

Relaxing venue at Birchmere, Alexandria - enjoyed our dinner; show was exhilarating & nostalgic at the same time. JS artistic delivery with his ukulele was incredible! Hard to believe that high quality of music is coming out of such a small instrument. Plus, it was great to see him again in person after almost 21 years :) He is as friendly & charming as ever! A must see if he's ever in your area!

  • Need more new songs

by russell on 9/12/24Rating: 4 out of 5

Got there early as we knew it was going to be crowded- and indeed it was. he got great seats and were excited to see Jake for the 5th time. His show started promptly at 7:30pm and he came out and played a couple new songs off of a new album. But that is when the show seemed to be a repeat of prior shows. He is an amazing musician however we are somewhat tired of hearing the same songs. We figure if this is the format for his shows, we will skip a few before we return. He is such a talents musician and interacts well with the audience. in conclusion, we are somewhat ambivalent about this show as it was amazing to hear his music but wish there were more new songs.

  • Jake is excellent talent and good human inbeing!

Great personality and unbelievable range of genres. Very enjoyable show.

  • Awesome concert

    by Antoinette on 9/10/24Elevation 27 - Virginia BeachRating: 5 out of 5

Jake was awesome. The show was very enjoyable. The venue was small so it felt like a close up concert. It was so nice of Jake to come out by the merchandise table and sign CD’s, albums and at least one Ukelele. He was so personable and took his time with each person even though I’m sure he was exhausted and ready to go to bed!!🛏️

  • Great talent in a cozy setting

    by Tamara E on 8/12/24Barrymore Theatre - MadisonRating: 5 out of 5

Jake Shimabukuro's talent on the ukulele is not to be underestimated. He's definitely a maestro on the instrument. He's also very personable both onstage and in-person, as was the case when he did a meet & greet after the show. I've seen him before in a larger venue and while the talent was the same, I enjoyed the more intimate setting of the smaller Barrymore Theatre. We were all in such close proximity to the stage and the acoustics were wonderful.

  • An evening of music and so much talent!!

    by P and D on 8/12/24Barrymore Theatre - MadisonRating: 5 out of 5

We have seem Jake Shimabukuro in 2018 at Viterbo and we were very impressed! Last Friday’s concert was even better! He has expanded to recording multiple parts and then playing new harmonies over the top! The concert featured a variety of styles from traditional Hawaiian songs to rock anthems and Beatles favorites to original songs. Jackson Waldhoff joined in with his bass guitar and it was amazing! The sounds that Jake can create with only four strings is quite remarkable! We could sense a real appreciation for the audience! After the show we met Jake and chatted about music and teaching and he was gracious and grateful! P also got a photo with Jackson! We highly recommend attending a future concert!!!

  • Absolutely fantastic
