Jacob Collier In Concert
Jacob Collier has long had a voice and talent far beyond his years. The North London, England-based vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, arranger, composer, producer, and all-around music theory prodigy has music in his blood — literally. Collier's mother, Susan, is a music teacher, conductor, and violinist at London's Royal Academy of Music, the same place his grandfather taught. As a kid, Jacob attended The Purcell School for Young Musicians and performed in productions of Mozart's The Magic Flute and Benjamin Britten's The Turn of the Screw.
But it wasn't until Collier began experimenting on his own that his music career took off. At age 17, he began uploading complex music videos that showed every vocal and instrumental part of a song, including keys, strings, percussion, and even as many as 14 vocal harmonies. These impressive videos, featuring covers of songs by artists like Stevie Wonder, Burt Bacharach, and George Gershwin, quickly went viral, enough to get the attention of legendary musician Quincy Jones. Around the same time, a PhD student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab began working with Collier on a one-man multimedia experience to capture all of his talents at once in a live setting.
By 2015, the then 20-year-old was ready to debut his technologically stunning show, featuring effects like 3D video loops and a vocal harmonizer, in London. Soon after, he took the show to Switzerland's Montreux Jazz Festival, where he opened for Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, and then onward to stages across the globe.
Already a master performer, Collier soon got to work on his debut album, In My Room, which came out in summer 2016. Just like his shows, the album was all Jacob — he wrote, arranged, played every instrument, and recorded the entire album on his own, all in his family's London home. The following year, two of the covers featured on the album, Stevie Wonder's "You and I" and ‘The Flintstones' theme song "Flintstones," won Grammy Awards for Best Arrangement.
After two-and-half grueling years on the road, including collaborations and performances with orchestras from around the world, Collier took time to work on his follow-up release. He announced that his second album would actually be a four-volume set, with the first volume, Djesse (Vol. 1) appearing in late 2018. Stay tuned for plenty more music from this unstoppable phenom.
Everybody I went with said it was one of the best concerts they've ever been to
The atmosphere at this show was unlike anything I've ever been too. From the patterned flashing lights to the people around me to Jacob doing a call and response with the audience, it was simply the greatest concert I've ever been to.
It's no secret that Jacob is an incredible musician, and he did not disappoint. He and the rest of his 6-piece band played some incredible interpretations of his own songs. The energy was amazing, and the audience engagement was fantastic. Well worth it!
The best show I’ve ever experienced in my life! Jacob was incredible! He’s a phenomenon!
Hands down the best show I've ever been to. THANK YOU.
I’ve been waiting for this moment for a whole year…Jacob’s concert is magical. I was born in a family full of musicians and have been one myself my whole life but Jacob!!! Jacob is something else. I am so honored to be part of the concert and this talented community. Best concert experience EVA!
What a show. The colors, the lights, the harmonies, the audience engagement... the absolute joy of Jacob Collier. Simply phenomenal.
Truly stole my breath away. Every second of the experience was mind numbingly amazing. Everything from the mix, to the lights were out of this world. I can't recommend this tour enough.
Incredible show from start to finish. No words can describe it -- no video, no photo -- can capture the energy, and musical genius. of Jacob and his team. Sound mixing, lights, creativity, audience engagement. It was all there. Best concert EXPERIENCE of my life.
Jacob is a musical genius. He brought the energy, vocals and stunning arrangements to History the other night. Not to mention his insanely talented band members. I really loved it! I'll definitely see him again the next time he's in town!
The show was excellent. Jacob is an incredible artist and I would absolutely see him again because I know every tour would be a unique and distinct experience. The venue is good, lots of different bars so it’s easy to get a drink, and the vibe is great. The only reason I’m giving this a 4-star review is the line took over an hour to get in. Doors were at 7:00, I got there at 7:15, and had to walk all the way past Lansdowne, over the overpass, and all the way down the other side of I-95. When I arrived, there were at least 1000 people waiting to enter. It made absolutely no sense; the venue was obviously not prepared for a sold out crowd. Once inside it was a great experience, but the line was completely baffling.
Hated the over one hour wait in the cold in line outside long after the doors had opened and 15 minutes after the show has begun Upset that the house of blues website said that proof of vaccination would be required at all concerts and it did not at this concert and I did not feel safe attending because of that even though I wore a mask
An awesome performance by some extremely talented musicians.
I've seen Jacob many times, and I'm a huge fan. I know each song intimately. Took the family to House of Blues on May 8th and we had balcony tix. I hoped they wouldn't be so bad due to the size of the venue. The view was fine. However, the SOUND sucked. The bass in the balcony was completely overloaded and masked the subtle nature of the playing that was happening onstage. Both Jacob and Robin's basses (plus kick drum) suffered the same fate. It was so overloaded, that the delicate harmonies were often masked and the piano disappeared as well. All you could hear was sub bass overload and distortion. I'm not sure I'm gonna blame the FOH mixer either, because when I moved positions (down) the problem was less. So, i'm gonna blame the venue and say they need to install baffles or something. Because it was ridiculously bad. Maybe it works for the normal HO Blues crowd, but Jacob's music is way to exacting for this venue, so I hope he doesn't return here. If he does, I'll have to suffer the mosh pit next to the mixing desk I guess. Otherwise, the venue seemed ok and is a nice size. Just don't go upstairs if you're remotely interested in things sounding like they are supposed to. BTW, I used to mix music (and film sound) in my younger days. Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan, and in the studio with Sting and Dire Straits programming synths in the late 80s early 90s. So, spent lots of time in perfectly tuned, very loud rooms, so i'm not some Karen when it comes to sound and sound quality.
He’s a musicians musician. I haven’t seen anyone control a crowd the way he does since Bruce Springsteen. And he’s super high energy. Clearly had a lot of fun. I’ve seen him once before and will see him again.
Amazing sound, light, energy! Everything was beyond expectation! It was a fabulous experience and such a dynamic show!
Jacob Collier is a Jazz Genius. His band members are also extremely talented. The concert was a great combination of solo and ensemble performances. I would see him again anytime.
This show was great, the sound and lighting were brilliant, but the venue ended up being pretty disappointing. It was good enough for me, at 6'2" but for the other 3 in my group who were all in the 5'- 5'3" range, the venue just does not provide any good sight lines unless you pay an extra $40 per person for a VIP upgrade. We even showed up over an hour before doors opened to try to stake out a good spot, but there just wasn't any hope besides having paid an extra 160 dollars on top of the initial 200 we paid for our tickets. And for two of them, I tried to lift them so they could see, and was told, "I'm sorry, but you can't do that because you're blocking people behind you" as if we weren't having our view blocked by a large group of people who squeezed right in front of us in the 10 minutes before the show began. Do not recommend this venue if you aren't either first in line or at least 6 feet tall.
It was an amazing show. Jacob’s insane expertise was exceptionally showcased and well paired with the rest of the band. I don’t think I’ve ever been as impressed with a performer.
Genius imp that can play anything, sing anything (in multiple layers of sound) ... including the audience. He's a treasure.
