About Jackie Greene

Jackie Greene on Tour

Americana and roots-rock warrior Jackie Greene is a musician’s musician - a restless singer-songwriter and consummate collaborator who’s spent most of his adult life on the road. Since releasing his 2002 debut album, Gone Wanderin’, in his early twenties, Greene has been a permanent fixture in roots, blues, and jam-rock circles. The California-born artist thrives on stage, whether he’s wielding a guitar - churning out fiery licks at a neck-breaking pace - or settling down in front of the keys for a smoky, soulful ballad. Greene has toured alongside heavy hitters like B.B. King, Mark Knopfler, Susan Tedeschi, Huey Lewis and Taj Mahal. In between his solo gigs, Greene became a regular member of Phil Lesh & Friends, played in Trigger Hippy with Joan Osborne, and joined the Black Crowes as lead guitarist in 2013. He’s since come around full circle, getting back to his folk-y roots with intimate solo recordings and acoustic live sets - several of which have been preserved on record.

About Jackie Greene

Jackie Greene has helped keep rock ‘n’ roll alive and kicking well into the 21st century. Born Chris Nelson in Salinas, California, on November 27, 1980 (Jimi Hendrix’s birthday!), Greene grew up outside of Sacramento, where he gravitated toward music from a young age. As a kid, he took to the piano, first motivated to learn the classical melodies from Disney’s Fantasia, before discovering Ray Charles. Digging through the old records of his parents, he further expanded his influences to blues icons Mississippi John Hurt and Muddy Waters. As a teen, he picked up the guitar, trying to emulate six-string specialists like Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton. But it was Bob Dylan and Tom Waits who inspired Greene to start writing his own songs, and he began playing open-mic gigs at Sacramento bars and coffee shops right out of high school. Greene honed his skills on those small stages, where he also learned how to command a crowd. His first studio was his garage and his first record deal came with local indie label Dig Music. Greene’s first album, Gone Wanderin’, highlighted the multi-instrumentalist’s bluesy, Bob Dylan-esque appeal - harmonica and all - and it earned him a 2003 California Music Award for Best Blues/Roots Album. From there, his career took off: He released a string of acclaimed solo albums, joined Phil Lesh & Friends, and contributed the song “I Will Never Let You Go” to the Academy Award-winning Best Original Score for the film Brokeback Mountain. He began the 2010s mostly devoted to more collaborations: He was a member of the short-lived Trigger Hippy (alongside Black Crowes drummer Steve Gorman and singer-songwriter Joan Osborne) and stepped into the role as lead guitarist for the Black Crowes until they called it quits in 2015. That same year, Greene returned with his first solo album in five years, Back to Birth, a robust, roots-oriented set that balances blistering blues guitar with tender, thoughtful songwriting. Since, he’s continued to dig further into classic Americana, bluegrass, folk and Delta blues as he tirelessly brings it to stages across the country - both on his own and with his many legendary friends.

Jackie and his band were the opening act for the Rich Robinson Band. (Prophet Omega was the first band on the bill, followed by Jackie) Jackie played about an 1 hour 10 minutes. Great set list....great sound mix....great performance. He is the real deal. He has the songs, the chops, and the voice. Look forward to seeing him again soon.... Great venue too!

  • One of the Best Musicians Out There!

    by amyo69 on 6/13/1420th Century Theater - CincinnatiRating: 5 out of 5

Hands down he is one of my favorites. I go to a dozen or more concerts a year and see a lot of big name musicians and Jackie is amazing!

  • Rich Robinson & Jackie Greene

    by Melissa1224 on 6/9/14Paradise Rock Club - BostonRating: 3 out of 5

Never heard Rich Robinson and was rather impressed. Liked the sound of his band. The crowd was really into it. I was disappointed that they played such a long set because I really went to hear Jackie Greene. I haven't seen Jackie since he played the Brighton Music Hall a few months ago with Trigger Hippy - FABULOUS SHOW! This recent show was not my favorite Jackie show. He seemed pre-occupied and not really into what was left of the crowd after Rich Robinson played. Next time I'll make sure he's the only one on the bill so I can get nothin but Jackie .....

The show was supposed to start at 8pm. We rolled in at 9:30pm thinking we'd miss the opening act and see Jackie Greene. As soon as we go there the some weird dude with an afro was jamming on stage. He walks off and the next guy comes on. It wasn't Jackie Greene. This guy plays for 2h (the same song? Maybe 2 different songs). Jackie didn't come on stage till well after midnight. We made it through 4 songs. I was falling asleep during the show. Venue was cool though?

Jackie Greene put on a great show as usaul.. I personally think he is one of the best and most enterining musicians . I try to catch him every time he comes around . I have seen him in varies groups and solo over 20 times . It was to bad he felt the need to put down boston on face book after the show ... Lost some popularity points ! The only draw back was that they started late and the opening act played a 90 minute set

Jackie Greene is one of the more impressive artists I have seen live. There is something for everyone in Jackie, as evidenced by the broad audience spectrum. If you have never seen Jackie Greene live. DO IT! Do yourself a favour.

  • Jackie Greene was awesome!

by AFriendlyMoose on 3/24/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

I have been watching Jackie Greene perform for years now, and he has only gotten better. I have seen him perform from small bars to concerts in the park to a stadium (Fox theater). This was by far the best show! Also, the Fox theater is a great place to see a show, what a facility.

  • Jackie is Da Man!

by JambandLover on 3/24/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Jackie is one of the most talented performers I know. And he keeps getting better and better. Wonderful to see him with his old band performing material from his excellent songbook, with a few great covers thrown in. His songwriting, vocal prowess, guitar playing, and high energy charisma were all on full display. They killed it at the Fox, and I'm sure won a ton of new fans.

  • Jackie, et al

by beeblebrox on 3/24/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

I loved this show! I'm always impressed how Jackie Greene seems to find young musicians and brings them on up to open for him. Loved the Tumbleweed Wanderers. Their CD proves their talent and they did a great job doing a live performance. It's great for them to get exposure to a bigger audience. Mother Hips did a rocking show. Jackie Greene and his musicians did a stellar job at holding the audience in the palm of their hands. His standard songs were done with soul, but his acoustic ballads were the highlight of the night for me. He did a great job on Captain's Daughter and Cell Block #9, Love hearing him pull out that acoustic guitar or sit on the keys and sing his soul out. Yes, he's a rocker, but the heart of him lies in the singer songwriter inside. He had a new addition of keyboard player Adam McDougall from the Black Crowes. It was nice to hear a new twist on some of his standard plays and pull off some great classics like New Speedway Boogie and Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On." Another great night at the Fox and with Jackie Greene and his entire band. They all rock!

His performance was not only him, but his whole band. The end with Jackie and The Motherhips was a great conclusion to aan overlal great show, Of course the Fox is an amazing venue as well.

  • by Anonymous on 3/5/14The Canyon - Agoura HillsRating: 4 out of 5

Such an underrated musician. He deserves much more recognition than he's gotten. The band is top notch, too. It was great to see him in such a small venue. Next time the Canyon Club needs to remove the dinner theater tables from the dance floor, as they usually do for every show I've been to. It's too bad the show was on the same night as the Oscars. I'm sure there would have been a bigger crowd. I can't even imagine how the artist might feel seeing such a small crowd, in a venue that can obviously bring in a lot more. That aside, it was still a great show!

  • Jackie stumbles

by samstella on 11/25/12The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

Jackie Greene is a fabulous musician and songwriter who has grown over the six or seven years I've been following him. His stage presence is still a bit limited but he now has a solid band with wonderful sidemen who, like Jackie, also tend to be multitalented. All that talent and Jackie's deep songbook are enough for me, and that's what I want to see when I go to a Jackie Greene show. So why would he want to keep bringing up lesser performers to join him when they only serve to dilute the quality of the show. Nicki Bluhm I get. She's got a great voice and adds a nice change of pace. But the other performers he invites on stage--many appear to be personal friends--simply don't add anything except maybe more dead air while everybody tunes up. Puh-lease, enough with the endless guitar tuning already! Also, while I fundamentally love his Grateful Dead connection, when it's a Jackie show, a little Dead goes a long way--especially at the end of the show. There's plenty of Jackie material for some great closing numbers. Don't send me home with the Dead in my head.
