About Jackie Greene

Jackie Greene on Tour

Americana and roots-rock warrior Jackie Greene is a musician’s musician - a restless singer-songwriter and consummate collaborator who’s spent most of his adult life on the road. Since releasing his 2002 debut album, Gone Wanderin’, in his early twenties, Greene has been a permanent fixture in roots, blues, and jam-rock circles. The California-born artist thrives on stage, whether he’s wielding a guitar - churning out fiery licks at a neck-breaking pace - or settling down in front of the keys for a smoky, soulful ballad. Greene has toured alongside heavy hitters like B.B. King, Mark Knopfler, Susan Tedeschi, Huey Lewis and Taj Mahal. In between his solo gigs, Greene became a regular member of Phil Lesh & Friends, played in Trigger Hippy with Joan Osborne, and joined the Black Crowes as lead guitarist in 2013. He’s since come around full circle, getting back to his folk-y roots with intimate solo recordings and acoustic live sets - several of which have been preserved on record.

About Jackie Greene

Jackie Greene has helped keep rock ‘n’ roll alive and kicking well into the 21st century. Born Chris Nelson in Salinas, California, on November 27, 1980 (Jimi Hendrix’s birthday!), Greene grew up outside of Sacramento, where he gravitated toward music from a young age. As a kid, he took to the piano, first motivated to learn the classical melodies from Disney’s Fantasia, before discovering Ray Charles. Digging through the old records of his parents, he further expanded his influences to blues icons Mississippi John Hurt and Muddy Waters. As a teen, he picked up the guitar, trying to emulate six-string specialists like Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton. But it was Bob Dylan and Tom Waits who inspired Greene to start writing his own songs, and he began playing open-mic gigs at Sacramento bars and coffee shops right out of high school. Greene honed his skills on those small stages, where he also learned how to command a crowd. His first studio was his garage and his first record deal came with local indie label Dig Music. Greene’s first album, Gone Wanderin’, highlighted the multi-instrumentalist’s bluesy, Bob Dylan-esque appeal - harmonica and all - and it earned him a 2003 California Music Award for Best Blues/Roots Album. From there, his career took off: He released a string of acclaimed solo albums, joined Phil Lesh & Friends, and contributed the song “I Will Never Let You Go” to the Academy Award-winning Best Original Score for the film Brokeback Mountain. He began the 2010s mostly devoted to more collaborations: He was a member of the short-lived Trigger Hippy (alongside Black Crowes drummer Steve Gorman and singer-songwriter Joan Osborne) and stepped into the role as lead guitarist for the Black Crowes until they called it quits in 2015. That same year, Greene returned with his first solo album in five years, Back to Birth, a robust, roots-oriented set that balances blistering blues guitar with tender, thoughtful songwriting. Since, he’s continued to dig further into classic Americana, bluegrass, folk and Delta blues as he tirelessly brings it to stages across the country - both on his own and with his many legendary friends.

  • Rusted Root red hot, Jackie "only" good(off night)

by Doctahfunk on 4/10/12Uptown Theatre Napa - NapaRating: 5 out of 5

Have seen Jackie Greene 5 times previous-the three of them at the Mystic Theater he scorched and brought the house down. The best live act I've seen in many years! Saturday though was Rusted Root's turn to shine brightly. They're the reason I gave a 5 star rating. The first time I've seen them. Powerful African rhythms, Spanish guitar, lots of multiinstrumental play amongst the 6 of them, as well as some fine vocals. They played for almost 2 hours. Had heard one of their albums previously and came away deeply impressed-looking forward to seeing them again. Jackie Greene was not up to his sizzling best Saturday as he lacked the intensity of recent performances. He did comment that we were "one of the quietest audiences I've seen" (not me!). Whatever the reason it will not deter me from catching him again soon- we all have off nights.Nice combination of acts though.

What a Great Night of Music. Rusted Root Opened the show with their usual High Energy set mixed with old and new song favorites. Jackie Greene followed with more great music. What a night !

  • Excellant performance

by MusicRoom on 2/13/12Aladdin Theater - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

Jackie has really evolved into a great show. The group he is touring with was very talented, each had a lot to offer and Jackie was very gracious. I love a show where everyone's talent's are showcased and this was one where everyone shined. Thanks a bunch guys, it was a great evening.

  • Another GREAT Jackie Greene performance

by DefRayer on 2/12/12Aladdin Theater - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

Once again Jackie has found a way to bring in a few friends on stage, mix it up while keeping his performances new and fresh. We drove Seattle to see the show as we're not fans of the Crocodile and the drive was well worth it! Loved the theater and location. Many have complained about the uncomfortable seating but there are lots of areas to stand if you choose. The only small downside was the sound was a little loud and the bass overpowering. Seemed like there were issues all night but even with that you still get 5 PLUS stars from this JG fan! Jabe Beyer was AMAZING as well! I'm a new fan!

Just an awesome show in general. Played a great mix of covers and original songs, knocked every one out of the park. Also, played for over 2 hours, which, for a Sunday night, was very impressive. I had a great time and would absolutely see Jackie play again. The man is talented, not to mention the rest of the band. The Paradise is a great place to see a show. Pretty small and intimate, and priced very well. Great acoustics. Outstanding show!

  • Jackie Ripped It Up

    by RowJimmy1971 on 10/23/11Paradise Rock Club - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

The headline says it all. This show was outstanding from start to finish. I've seen Jackie play with Phil Lesh and I've seen him as an opener for Gov't Mule, but this was the first time I've seen him as the headlining act, and believe me....he did not disappoint. He performed a fantastic mix of originals and covers, and he interacted nicely with the crowd. Seeing him in an intimate setting like the Paradise, which I had not been to in about 20 years, also added to the experience as my wife and I arrived early enough to find a spot right up against the stage. I would certainly recommend that anyone who appreciates classic rock and blues should make it a point to see Jackie Greene at some point. It's tough to find a better bang for your buck out there right now!

  • venue confusion

by Buckeyeslowpoke on 10/20/11Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORKRating: 3 out of 5

The concert was to be the highlight of our NYC trip but we were not comfortable with the location and declined to attend; giving our tickets away at a nearby bar. We walked past the venue twice (circa 5:00PM) before we noticed the subdued address and name behind the grafiti and overall horrible venue presentation; a garage door; really?!. Yes, we are "out-of-towners" and the location/event could be perfectly safe (if so, why the garage door?). However, it did not appear to be a safe place to be; especially as the concert let out near midnight. We also had asked a half dozen people in and around the location, and not one of them had heard of the place! We've seen concerts at small venues before but this was not to happen for this out-of-town couple. Thanks anyway .........................

  • jackie greene

by wooba on 10/18/11Paradise Rock Club - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

jackie is the best young musician you could see at this time. a chance to catch him at the paradise rock club was an event to remember. in the future when the masses finally clue in to this talent and he is playing bigger venues i will be able to say i saw him at the paradise where he was accessible before the show and he blow the roof off the place. jackie's voice has power to spare and he is already a master guitarist of many styles. also he can sit down at the piano or organ and rock the joint. with a top notch band behind him, can't wait to see them again. the wooba

  • Jackie Kills It

    by LesPaul4Lyfe on 10/18/11Paradise Rock Club - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

I'd seen Jackie before opening for Govt Mule and was impressed with the tightness and overall sound. This time, however, I was blown away. In the past year, the band has progressed and developed into something much more special. The combination of originals and a fair number of covers (everything from the Dead to CCR) was a welcome surprise. My only complaint was that, though Jackie was great on lead guitar, sometimes it went on a bit too long for my tastes. It's also a lot of fun to see the main artist hanging out outside the venue both before and after the show. Keep on keeping on Jackie.

  • Next stop SF!

by Charmo on 10/18/11Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORKRating: 5 out of 5

Jackie Greene is a mega talent and how fortunate we are to be able to take part in his music in cool small venues like the Bowery in NYC and the Paradise in Boston. I can't wait to get out to SF and see him at the Fillmore!

  • Beyond my expectations

by Coachski on 10/18/11Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORKRating: 5 out of 5

Was not really familiar with his music ... was terrificly surprised by the music and musicianship. Joan Osborne joined for two fabulous songs. I would definitely go to see him again.

  • by RenC on 10/17/11Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORKRating: 4 out of 5

Jackie and band were great and Joan Osborne was a real treat. Only complaint would be that he played so many Grateful Dead songs. He did a GREAT job with them but I would have liked to hear more of his songs. Maybe it was one of the Dead's birthdays?

  • Jackie Greene was phenomenal

by DarkWater on 10/17/11Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORKRating: 5 out of 5

I'd seen him several times performing with Phil Lesh, and even in that supporting role, it was obvious that Jackie had both serious talent and star-quality stage presence. Still, I wasn't expecting the caliber of musicianship that I witnessed this last Friday night. From earnest folk-rock to hardcore jams to powerful and impeccably executed blues, the show was top-notch from start to finish.

  • Jackie Greene was great!

    by Sparkles110 on 10/17/11Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORKRating: 4 out of 5

I loved how Miss Osborne came out and slowed down the song to a real country beat, like molasses.

  • Jackie Greene@ Bowery Ballroom

by madamerose on 10/17/11Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORKRating: 5 out of 5

Jackie wowed NYC with yet another amazing show. His incredible talent combined with high energy left all with a night to remember!

  • Jackie's got talent

by BrucefanDK on 10/17/11Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORKRating: 4 out of 5

Jackie Greene displays multiple talents on guitar, banjo, keyboards and harmonica. Most of the music he plays in concert is upbeat and sung with a lot of felling. His Grateful Dead connection adds a spark to the performance and singing with special guests such as Joan Osborne adds some tasty icing to the cake.

  • Jackie Greene Bowery Ballroom

by puppetmeister on 10/17/11Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORKRating: 5 out of 5

As usual, Jackie's performace was the best ! He and his band were entertaining and totally commanded the room and all the fans were dancing and happy. His own great songs mixed with some favorites of old... Scarlet Begonians from the Dead as well as many others were crowd favorites. Jackie is incredible vocally and on the guitar and keys as well as his band memebers switching from guitar to bass and back.

  • by Anonymous on 10/17/11Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORKRating: 5 out of 5

Incredible Show- Jackie is one of the best live shows out there. What an amazing musician.
