About Jackie Greene

Jackie Greene on Tour

Americana and roots-rock warrior Jackie Greene is a musician’s musician - a restless singer-songwriter and consummate collaborator who’s spent most of his adult life on the road. Since releasing his 2002 debut album, Gone Wanderin’, in his early twenties, Greene has been a permanent fixture in roots, blues, and jam-rock circles. The California-born artist thrives on stage, whether he’s wielding a guitar - churning out fiery licks at a neck-breaking pace - or settling down in front of the keys for a smoky, soulful ballad. Greene has toured alongside heavy hitters like B.B. King, Mark Knopfler, Susan Tedeschi, Huey Lewis and Taj Mahal. In between his solo gigs, Greene became a regular member of Phil Lesh & Friends, played in Trigger Hippy with Joan Osborne, and joined the Black Crowes as lead guitarist in 2013. He’s since come around full circle, getting back to his folk-y roots with intimate solo recordings and acoustic live sets - several of which have been preserved on record.

About Jackie Greene

Jackie Greene has helped keep rock ‘n’ roll alive and kicking well into the 21st century. Born Chris Nelson in Salinas, California, on November 27, 1980 (Jimi Hendrix’s birthday!), Greene grew up outside of Sacramento, where he gravitated toward music from a young age. As a kid, he took to the piano, first motivated to learn the classical melodies from Disney’s Fantasia, before discovering Ray Charles. Digging through the old records of his parents, he further expanded his influences to blues icons Mississippi John Hurt and Muddy Waters. As a teen, he picked up the guitar, trying to emulate six-string specialists like Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton. But it was Bob Dylan and Tom Waits who inspired Greene to start writing his own songs, and he began playing open-mic gigs at Sacramento bars and coffee shops right out of high school. Greene honed his skills on those small stages, where he also learned how to command a crowd. His first studio was his garage and his first record deal came with local indie label Dig Music. Greene’s first album, Gone Wanderin’, highlighted the multi-instrumentalist’s bluesy, Bob Dylan-esque appeal - harmonica and all - and it earned him a 2003 California Music Award for Best Blues/Roots Album. From there, his career took off: He released a string of acclaimed solo albums, joined Phil Lesh & Friends, and contributed the song “I Will Never Let You Go” to the Academy Award-winning Best Original Score for the film Brokeback Mountain. He began the 2010s mostly devoted to more collaborations: He was a member of the short-lived Trigger Hippy (alongside Black Crowes drummer Steve Gorman and singer-songwriter Joan Osborne) and stepped into the role as lead guitarist for the Black Crowes until they called it quits in 2015. That same year, Greene returned with his first solo album in five years, Back to Birth, a robust, roots-oriented set that balances blistering blues guitar with tender, thoughtful songwriting. Since, he’s continued to dig further into classic Americana, bluegrass, folk and Delta blues as he tirelessly brings it to stages across the country - both on his own and with his many legendary friends.

  • Jackie Greene- Stone Pony

by Moira9 on 11/1/16The Stone Pony - Asbury ParkRating: 5 out of 5

Jackie Greene is a true professional, a real artist of his craft. His songs are direct and honest. The Stone Pony was a great venue to see him for it felt very intimate. I personally loved his version of Dancing in the Dark in Bruce's hood and Shakedown St./the wall as well. I have to mention how clear and crisp the instruments sounded...fun night with a tight band.

Good Show! Not spectacular, but Jackie and his group did an outstanding job.

  • Jackie Greene Shines at BMH!

    by Clarkie02360 on 10/25/16Brighton Music Hall - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Jackie Greene has confirmed that Music is in good stead! A lyrical and musical wonder, Jackie 's prose harkens back to the days of Dylan, The Dead, and Springsteen. Musically he has the guitar chops of a Garcia, Haynes, matching it with a voice of an Angel. On this night at Brighton Music Hall he and his tight band wowed the packed crowd with a display of old ( "I'm So Gone" which rocked!) and new music ("Now I Can See For Miles" a truly Chordal master) while covering the Allman's "Don't Keep Me Wondering" that would have made the Brothers proud! Do yourself a favor and listen to this music magic man! And go see him Live!

  • Amazing!

I've seen Jakie Greene many times, more than 45, and this was hands down THE BEST show I have seen to date. Jackie was so in the zone, shredding all night! The set list was unbelievable too.The addition of Jon Cornell on bass was a great move, just what the band needed. Another amazing night of music!

What an incredible experience! First, Skin and Bones (the opening act) was fantastic. Then Jackie Greene and the band were downright amazing. They never, ever disappoint!!! The icing on the cake was having Ben Jennigan and Alex Nelson join in for a couple of songs. I was on a natural high for days after listening to this show. Thank you!!!

  • Jackie Greene put on a SOLID show at Uptown

by WinterlandKen on 3/29/16Uptown Theatre Napa - NapaRating: 5 out of 5

We hadn't seen Jackie live in a few years. He, and his electric band, put on an enjoyable, tight, longer show in Napa on Sat 3/26. The song selections were great! He performed his own material for the entire show - until he did three covers to conclude the set/encore. They did U2's "Streets With No Names" on which Jackie NAILED those tough vocals. Then they covered the Dead's "Jack Straw" very nicely. They finished up with an extra soulful, extended cover of the Beatles' "Don't Let Me Down". U2 and the Beatles are tough to cover, and he NAILED the vocals. Very impressive. My only thought was, how would he handle a Rollings Stones classic? Hmmmm..

  • Soooo Fun

    by Cynann1957 on 3/29/16Uptown Theatre Napa - NapaRating: 5 out of 5

It's been a few years since I've seen Jackie, and he lives up to his reputation. Last I saw him he was with the Dead and that was an awesome time as well. He has happy music and always puts me in a good mood. Thank you Jackie for your stellar performance!

We've been Jackie Greene fans for years. He didn't disappoint. An amazing show. I wish he would have played all night. Completely awesome!

  • Both Nicki and Jackie absolutely killed it.

by FatHeadDuke on 12/8/15Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Nicki and the Gramblers - I have listened to them from the beginning and it's so awesome to see/hear how much they have grown. The chemistry on stage and the vibe they put out to the crowd is amazing. Nicki sings with so much soul and energy, Deren slashes on guitar and the rest of the band make it all come together perfectly. Although the albums are great, seeing them live is something that you wouldn't get from a CD/record/MP3 experience. Jackie - Jesus this guy is talented. Piano, organ, guitar, singing; what else? Jackie and his band really got the house rocking with their set and it was a lot of fun to rock out with them. Look forward to hearing more of his music and seeing him live again.

  • Jackie Greene is always good!

    by Blue48dahli on 11/30/15Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 4 out of 5

It was a good show at the Fox. Jackie is always good. So incredibly talented. The Fox in Oakland is a great venue for concerts. I have been going to Jackie Greene's shows for many years now, I love his music. His new album is really good, he played songs from this one mostly. Only con is that his shows seem to be getting shorter and shorter. Not sure what is up with that. Saw him in Seattle a few months ago, and that was a short show as well. Anyway, Jackie Greene is fabulous, don't miss him if you get the chance to go to one of his shows.

    by learner53 on 12/2/14The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Although I love the Grateful Dead songs he did, I really loved his own music. I can't wait for his new album coming out next year.

  • THE JACKIE GREENE SHOW

by gsparky on 6/26/14The Belly Up - Solana BeachRating: 5 out of 5

WOW....I have seen Jackie many times opening for others and also with the Black Crowes. This show he was headlining and played for a good 1 1/2 hours. I could not get enough of his guitar work...I wanted more solo's and extended guitar riffs. Even though he was sick his voice sounded good. He played a couple songs on the keyboards showing his range and talent. Was a fun night of music !

  • by KatyfromKansas on 6/21/14The Record Bar - Kansas CityRating: 5 out of 5

JACKIE GREENE WAS AMAZING. Extremely talented guy with a great band. His "Tell Me Mama, Tell Me Right" was phenomenal.

  • A little disappointed

by Guitar59 on 6/21/14The Record Bar - Kansas CityRating: 3 out of 5

Wasn't sure what to expect, I had never been to a show at the Record Bar and doubt I will ever return. Seating was terrible. Not much for stand for an entire show. As for the Jackie Green and the Band, It was a good show, however, to much jamming and not enough song play. Number of songs played was minimal.
