J.I.D. In Concert

You're going to want to catch a live set from the Atlanta rapper behind one of 2018's most acclaimed hip-hop albums. J.I.D. brings a vital energy and lyrical dexterity to his songs live on the stage, and he's no stranger to huge crowds: in 2017, he opened up for J. Cole's 4 Your Eyez Only tour, joining his Dreamville Records boss on a six-month stretch that spanned North America, Europe, and Australia. Following that marathon run of performances, J.I.D. set out in 2017 on his Never Had Sh*t tour — the rapper's first headlining trek, which featured support from EarthGang, members of his Spillage Village collective. Since then, J.I.D.'s graced the stage at Miami's 2018 Rolling Loud festival and performed "Skrawberries" live on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon as a tribute to his frequent collaborator, Mac Miller. In early 2019, he'll be taking off on a 34-city tour — named the Catch Me If You Can tour after the 2002 film starring his hero, Leonardo DiCaprio — which begins at Chicago's Patio Theater and caps off in Birmingham, Alabama.

J.I.D. Background

At age 28, J.I.D. is finally beginning to get the attention he deserves, thanks to an undeniable combination of masterful rapping and good old-fashioned hard work. Born with the auspicious name of Destin Choice Route, the East Atlanta native got his nickname from his grandmother, a reference to his "jittery" demeanor. The same erratic nature informs his rap style: his restless, kinetic bars trace the intricate patterns of a mind racing at a mile a minute. J.I.D. grew up on Atlanta's Bouldercrest Road, the same stomping grounds as a young Gucci Mane. But where Gucci's songs sprang from trap houses, J.I.D. favors jazzy, upbeat boom-bap that folds in influences from trap, soul, and R&B. You could say the guy's a rapper's rapper; after five years of mixtapes and EPs, he even got J. Cole's attention, signing to the North Carolina superstar's Dreamville label in 2017 and releasing his debut album, The Never Story, the same year. But 2018 was J.I.D.'s biggest year yet: he nabbed a coveted spot on the cover of XXL's 2018 Freshman Class and released DiCaprio 2, his best album to date, with features from A$AP Ferg, Ella Mai, and Method Man. (And of course, J. Cole, who J.I.D. inarguably out-raps on the album's second single, "Off Deez," in a thrilling student-becomes-the-teacher moment.) The newfound acclaim couldn't be more deserved: in an era where virality often seems to trump skill, J.I.D. proves that craftsmanship still matters.

  • Dreamville on TOP!!

by Almightynationn on 6/17/19House of Blues Houston presented by Cricket Wireless - HoustonRating: 5 out of 5

Besides the doorman who was having a power trip, preventing me from bringing my Chucky doll into the venue, the night was top notch. Mereba, Saba, Cozz, & J.I.D all rocked the mic and made for a memorable concert experience especially given that it was at the strict af' House of Blues location. I had recently just seen Saba, Cozz & J.I.D all at the Dreamville festival back in August but I'm so pleased I attended this show to see these artist more in depth, and with a better view may I add. To top it all off at the shows end the East Atlanta Playboy himself greeted all the fans who worked their way up to the front of the barricade and signed items and took photos. Luckily for me and my girl we were already posted near the front of the stage so I was able to get my Dreamville festival t-shirt signed and also touched knuckles with the homie J.I.D, rad ass!

  • Priceless Experience

by M. M. on 6/17/19House of Blues Houston presented by Cricket Wireless - HoustonRating: 5 out of 5

It was amazing and worth every dollar. This was a gift for a friend and he loved it! So I’m definitely happy. The fan interaction was awesome! JID, Mereba, Deante, and all other performers stage presence was spectacular. I definitely will go to their concerts. I literally had the time of my life after the show. I was able to get photos and autographs. Slight cons: The times we were given were a lot earlier than most of us thought it should’ve been, so we were in a long line of people waiting for an hour and a half. The fact VIP is standing room only isn’t cool. I wish there was better crowd control and I don’t appreciate how venue workers were letting a few people bribe them to get in front of the barrier gate.

  • Great venue!! Small/Mid-size venue but very clean&spaced out

    by G. M. on 5/8/19Baltimore Soundstage - BaltimoreRating: 5 out of 5

The sound was great, lighting was great, and i like the layout of the building alot. Parking and getting in can be a pain but thats only cuz its dead in the middle of downtown B-More. Would highly recommended seeing a show here and plan to do so again myself!!

  • Best Night Ever

    by K. B. on 3/16/19Rex Theater - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

This show was one of the best I’ve ever been to from open to close. The openers did their thing and J.I.D’s live show is CRAZY I saw some people get trampled once or twice. He sounds just the same live and brings hella energy. So many Pittsburgh natives were there and they lit the city on fire. I was disappointed the after party got cancelled cause I would’ve stayed out all night lol. Also I met Reason and J.I.D and everyone stuck around for autographs after the show. The whole experience was outstanding if he comes back I’ll be there again for sure!!

  • Best show ever

by Noah on 3/12/19Rex Theater - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Rex theater is a smallish venue which made the experience even cooler. Everyone there was packed in and a huge fan, singing every word and going nuts for the entirety of the show. Reason was the opening act and he BROUGHT IT. Fantastic way to kick it off. JID came out and it couldn't be any better. I knew he was supposed an amazing live performer but he passed all expectations. He was absolutely amazing and knew how to engage the crowd. The only negative about the night is I don't know if I'll ever go to a better show again.

  • J.I.D

by Eric on 3/12/19Rex Theater - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5
