Serve up more like this please!

by runrhi on 3/29/10Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

Never been to anything like this before. Sure I've been to concerts, speaker things, plays - you name it. But to hear and see a radio guy talk about a radio program - never. The concept is great, and Ira was engaging, funny and it was a memorable evening. Serve up more like this please!

    Great Insights

by uniquechica on 3/29/10Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

For anyone who was ever curious about how this American life comes together, this is a great great show. Ira explains how the select stories, how the structure of a story comes together, how he ended up doing what he does. He shares some stories that did not make the cut, and gives more info about the stories that did. I don't know that the sound levels were well-synchronized, since the recordings came off a little too loud compared to Ira's live voice, but I was sitting in the back and don't have the best of hearing when it comes to bass. Otherwise, the show was as well-put together as the radio show itself. The only drawback is that I wish they had talked a bit more about the staff. (The might have, I did arrive about 15-20 min late.)

    Intelligent, insightful, and funny

by pennstatevr6 on 3/29/10Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

Despite catching the late show and fighting some yawns early on, Ira's cadence and delivery are amazing and kept my attention for almost 2 hours. We had laughs, heard him analyze the structure of his show, and more. All in all a wonderful experience.

Ira Glass - master of all storytelling

by bubbahead101 on 3/28/10Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

I honestly can't imagine my life from the past 10 years without Ira's voice. This event proved to me why I love his stories and insight so much.

I'd reccomend it to a super fan

by Anonymous on 3/28/10Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

It was like listening to the radio... only more expensive. I think that Ira Glass' appeal is when he tells other people's stories, and maybe not his own. It was too self important for me.

    a disappointing radio story

by Anonymous on 3/28/10Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

by his own admission, ira glass had never done two shows in one night, and he'd flown in from new york just that morning. hmmm. is he hedging or does he know this show will be lackluster? I've been a fan of TAL for years, so i was greatly anticipating this evening. the show started off well: lights off, ira recounting a hurricane katrina story, playing tape from an interview. it was everything that makes TAL the special show it is. but then, the lights came up, and the wheels fell off. what we sat through was a disjointed hodgepodge of why radio is different from other forms of media, a story that, at the last minute, was pulled, an explanation of why rock bands have weird riders in their contracts (it's to ensure the contracts have actually been read), and a non-explanation to the question, "Where do you get your story ideas?" maybe he was tired, maybe two shows in one night was too much, maybe this show wasn't ready for prime time. whatever the reason, it was a disappointment, which was evidenced by the throng of people leaving as the lights came on for the q&a session. it'd have been interesting to see how the 7:00 show went. ira, i'll definitely come back to see you again, but not this late at night.

Eye opening and uplifting. A real look into real journalism. It is time for a v2 text book of journalism to be released. The 1950's model is done...

    Great Radio Face

by elasticman on 3/28/10Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

Ira Glass is an amazing story teller. Very natural, broke it down for us how his shows come together or don't. One thing you can"t teach is his basic humanity and empathy which comes through in his shows and during his show.

    A Long Show

by MaxDM on 3/28/10Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

The show was long - with Ira Glass skipping around to a lot of things. I kinda wish his show was as tight as the radio stories. That said, there was a lot of interesting content - I was surprised to find out that many if not most of the stories they start with with are eventually discarded. They develop the whole whing - then decide it's not interesting - or not believable - or doesn't develop enough emotion - or - just doesn't fly. I now appreciate more than ever why the radio presentations are so wonderful.

    Ira Glass: Inspired Genius

Ira Glass created an atmosphere of personal connection, telling stories which brought the audience into his world. He spoke of narrative and it's relationship to radio, and it's impact on our understanding of each other through empathy.

Clever in all the right ways

by RoseV on 3/28/10Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

The thing that makes Ira Glass so enjoyable to listen to on radio is the fact that you feel like you know him personally by the time you are done listening to him. It seems as if he is sitting next to you on your couch, searching for the right words, awkwardly laughing, and having moments of clear insight into your life. Last night, his challenge was immense. One man, on a black stage, a few spotlights, facing a huge sea of faces. And yet, he managed to shape the experience akin to the radio kind. There were times when I had to remember that I was not the only one in the audience -- not the only one he was meekly speaking to -- by looking around at the rapt faces of those next to me. We were enthralled by a single man speaking to us about radio. Can I just say that again? For two straight hours, we listened to one man speak to us about radio and we were enthralled. As if he were sitting on my couch telling it to me, Ira makes me feel that I do not always have to have the right words to be heard; that I do not need a polished veneer to be successful; that I can let things surprise me and be glad for the joy of it. Last night, I was reminded that I can be myself and be happy.

    Ira Glass... Storyteller Extraordinaire

by lamitchman on 3/28/10Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

Loved the live Ira Glass show at UCLA... not only a fascinating inside look at "This American Life", but also a primer for listening to the show. We went to the later show... and while he was admittedly tired, Ira showed no signs of slowing down. He went 2+ hours... what an entertaining and informative night!

Ira Glass is an amazing storyteller!

by Hilanerd on 3/28/10Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

This was a wonderful event. Ira Glass can make any subject seem fascinating and that includes telling the story about how to tell a good radio story. He has excellent stage presence, chose wonderful examples of word and music clips and really interacted well with the audience. He appeared to love every minute of it and seemed reluctant to stop telling stories and leave the stage to rest and prepare for his next performance - even though he reported a non-stop schedule. I have seen many events sponsored by KCRW and at UCLA's Royce Hall and this was, by far, one of my favorites.

    Ira Glass

by pprins on 3/28/10Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

It is difficult to keep an audience still for 2 hours while simply talking. This ability of providing such a captivating way of telling stories is what attracted me to "This American Life" in the first place. This time around - it was a pleasure to see Ira glass in action. Now I know what happens behind the scenes to make my favorite radio show what it is.
