    More Ira, less Showtime clips

by Anonymous on 4/4/11Lisner Auditorium - Washington

As much as we love Ira Glass, we were quite disappointed with the show on Saturday night. Almost all of it revolved around watching clips from his Showtime television series. He would then briefly comment on the clips and move on to the next. Additionally, the audio for much of the performance and the clips was at such a high volume that it bounced off the walls and reverberated making it difficult to hear. Hopefully next time, he will do what he does best -- tell stories.

    Not exactly what I expected

by janezebel on 4/4/11Lisner Auditorium - Washington

I love Ira Glass and was more than a little excited to finally see the man behind the voice! Overall, I did enjoy the evening but it definitely was not what I had been anxiously awaiting since I purchased my ticket in mid-November. I had already seen most of the TAL tv series on Netflix so, although I enjoyed seeing them with intro's from Ira, I would have far preferred him talking more about the process, giving more time for questions, or just telling stories the way only Ira Glass can do. I did enjoy hearing his take on the recent funding cuts to public radio though ... fortuitous that this event was already on the books when that was announced!

Fun but "low effort" and not worth the money

by AIAK on 4/4/11Lisner Auditorium - Washington

Ira Glass is always funny and fun and interesting to listen to, but I thought it was a bit of a cheap trick that much of the evening was spent watching clips of the This American Life TV show, with Glass just providing a bit of commentary before and after, plus a lengthy pitch for continued Government funding for NPR. Seemed like something of a low effort approach, not really worth the ticket price.

An evening out with an unforgettable voice!

by Anonymous on 4/4/11Lisner Auditorium - Washington

A well presented evening of conversation and insight into one of America's leading oratory narrators. Relaxing and fun, we highly recommend an evening with Ira Glass.

How did 2 friends and I just pay $45 each to mainly just watch already aired "This American Life" TV show snippets -- we had already seen most of the stories on Current TV! Feedback and insight from the show's headliner was very minimal; his role focused on pressing "Play". Not that I expected a full, live "This American Life" but some effort for live entertainment (beyond brief Q&A session) should have been made to make it worthy of the price tag. This felt like a very half-baked performance, and, indeed, this probably explains why lots in the audience were leaving early.

    Ira is a rockstar!

    by av8rdc on 4/4/11Lisner Auditorium - Washington

I've never been moved by music they way people are who idolize rock stars. But I kind of understand how they feel by the way I admire Ira and the storytelling machine he has created at This American Life. I never thought I could be so riveted by the stories of everyday people. Ira and his staff have a gift of being able to bring these stories to life in ways that can be experienced by those of us without their gift.

The sound was so bad (too much reverberation) that I could only understand about 30% of the words -- often not enough to get the overall gist. And I am not hearing impaired. With the exception of the Q&A session at the end, when the voice that I paid to hear finally came out, the rest of the performance reflected a lack of thoughtfulness, a lack of design. Where was the "narrative arc," Ira? I do admire Ira Glass but this was a total let down.

He is a God of storytelling and this was an unforgettable experience to hear him tell about the production of TAL and all the things that go into it.

by Feliz1 on 3/30/10Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

I have been a fan for quite sometime now but this was the first time I saw him perform his show. He was FANTASTIC! He didn't dissapoint. It was very interesting how the stories are developed. Ira was very funny with out really trying, the evening just flew by. I would definately go see him again.

    Exceeded (high) expectations

by Shahin on 3/30/10Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

I bought tickets solely because I loved the show and wanted to see the man behind it all in action, thinking we'd sit through live recordings of some stories. This was by far a much better experience, or as Ira himself put it more human, more commentary rather than formal. Through the one man show, I admired not only the regularly great (!) stories and talks and his intermittent commentary but also his talents as a talk show host, with one hand on music and the other on interview excerpts... this was pretty grand.

    disappointing

by meandmeme on 3/29/10Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

I had expectations that were not met, perhaps because I've been to other Ira Glass events and listen to his show weekly. . I expected more story- telling and less about how the show is done, his philosophy, story structure, etc. I'm a huge fan of Ira's and of his brilliant show but felt let down, and felt that the tkts were much too expensive. It wasn't a satisfying, thought provoking, engaging evening as I expected.. it was just... sweet. That's not enough to warrant the cost of the tkts., the driving, the costly and hassled parking situation... (By the way, when buying parking stub at those stations in the lots, how would one know if the show would be more than 2 hrs or not? $6 v $10 for the parking.)

    I. LOVE. IRA.

by eblanton on 3/29/10Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

Charming. Insightful. Intelligent. Human. Quirky. And like Ira said - just "Fun." The evening was a great visual of one my most favorite radio shows. I could have watched Ira talk all night!

    Ira Glass was inaudible

by Anonymous on 3/29/10Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

My friends and I were so disappointed in the show, because we couldn't hear 95% of what Ira was saying. It sounded as if the microphone was swallowing his words. But, we had no problems understanding the recordings Ira played. Is there some way we can get our money back?

Simply amazing. So great to hear the machinations of how the show is put together, and what, in Ira's estimation, makes a great story.
