About

Here's a reason to be happy ever after...

Direct from Broadway, the critically acclaimed and much beloved production of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Tony®-winning triumph is coming to Chicago with its Broadway stars to boot. INTO THE WOODS features Montego Glover as The Witch, Stephanie J. Block as The Baker's Wife, Sebastian Arcelus as The Baker, and Gavin Creel as Cinderella's Prince/Wolf - all reprising their Broadway roles - in a production called "radiant" (Variety), "enchanting" (The Wall Street Journal), and "a priceless revival with a perfect cast" (The Washington Post). Directed by Lear deBessonet (Hercules), this theatrical event honors Sondheim's legendary memory and his Broadway masterpiece like never before.

"Should you go? Of course you should!" (The New York Times).

    Most comical!

by Theatermama on 5/2/23James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

I have seen Into the Woods a dozen times in my life! This was by far the most fun and comical I have ever seen. Especially Little Red Riding Hood and the Prince choreography and singing. We all loved the puppeteers and the cow. I have to mention the witch’s voice! I disliked the bare bones set and orchestra on stage. It gave a real “rehearsal” feel. Trees were kinda cool. Anyway, set was a bummer.

    First Broadway Show

by Jayce Schroeder on 5/2/23James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

This was our first Broadway show ever and it did not disappoint. The acting, puppeteers, story, and the music were all out of this world. I would definitely see this show again and recommend everyone to go see it for themselves.

Beautiful show, in a beautiful venue

by Regina on 5/2/23James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

The Nederlander Theatre in Chicago is quite beautiful! I was excited to see what this new revival did to one of my favorite musicals. What this particular production lacked in spectacle, it completely made up for in sheer talent and entertainment, these actors really pulled their weight and it definitely was worth it!!!

    Into the Woods—OUTSTANDING

by Diane D on 5/1/23James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

My daughter and I went to Into the Woods on Thursday evening. The show was excellent from start to finish. The actors we on top of their game. I loved the simplicity of the scenes. Without a doubt, the cow stole the show. I would highly recommend this show to anyone who loves fairy tales, great acting and wonderful music!

One of a kind show for all ages

Phenomenal show! The cast, crew and orchestra were brilliant. I felt Sondheim's presence throughout the entire performance.

    below average

by Mark on 5/1/23James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

The show is waaaayyyy too long and the second act is totally redundant. There is no main theme song and the music is bland. Actors perform very well and the first act has many funny moment, but overall it's very average.

Only if you REALLY like musicals

by NYIA on 5/1/23James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

Been to many many Broadway shows on Broadway and Touring. First time (ever) I am hedging on a positive review. The Into the Woods (Chicago - James Nederlander Theatre) performers were very talented and entertaining. The creativity of the production was excellent (the white cow, the Giant-ess in the second act). The story has good moments and humorous moments. But no memorable songs in your head as you leave. No true showstopper numbers that stood out visually or musically. And it was far too long - the story and the musical content did not justify or carry the marathon length of the show. the first act is a complete story on its own, and was almost long enough to be a stand alone show. the second act was also too long - not sure why it was needed or what it added. At the end of the show, the Witch gets center stage for applause - but the stars and focus of the show were clearly the Bakers Wife and Cinderella - an indication of how disconnected the show producers were from what the audience sees and feels. I would only recommend this show to a die-hard Broadway musical fan.

    Cheesy fun

by ChicagoGuy on 4/30/23James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

All the normal storylines, predictable but nicely done. Good enough to see once.

    This was really long

by Bettyann on 4/30/23James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

The show was long and the seats were uncomfortable. There were only two wonderful singers. The rest are very mediocre. And the show is very average. The stories seemed to drag on and on and on and on! For me, it is really only two out of five stars.

Excellent Show but Block was a No Show

by Jacob on 4/28/23James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

I thought this production of Into the Woods was entertaining but I was most excited about seeing Stephanie J. Block. I made sure to read through the show description before buying tickets as I knew she would be out for a couple of performances in May. I went opening night on April 25 and when I opened my program a small white paper flew out and I prayed it would say anyone else but alas it said Stephanie was out. I was truly heart broken as she was the reason I bought a ticket. Friends of mine went the next two nights and she was out for their shows as well. Really Disappointing and put a damper on the whole experience.

    Milky White is Cuter Live

by Markiemoo on 4/28/23James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

Great show! I was so glad to see so much of the original cast touring - you don't see that often. I took the train in to Chicago from rural Ohio an$ it was worth it! Milky White steals the show! And I was surprised at how much I liked Red. Go see it! It’s a great show

Strong cast, don't love the story

    by Tara on 4/26/23

This touring cast did a wonderful job on opening night in Chicago and you can tell they are all extremely talented. Special shout outs to the actors playing Milky White, Prince Charming, The Witch, and Little Red. Sadly, the source material has always been stale and uninteresting to me, so I was hoping this would change that but I found myself slightly bored around intermission.
