Great show- Just the right amount of singing and dancing.
The descriptions of the show were fuzzy and I did not understand them. I took a chance and I was wrong; will not do that again.
This show was incredible. I bought tickets because I saw that Broadway legend Anthony Rapp was in the touring cast, not really knowing a whole lot about the show. Well the show was gosh dang fantastic. I've never cried at a show before, but this one brought me to tears. I 100% recommend this to anybody ever.
The worst play I have ever seen. I was really surprised. The performers were fantastic and the venue was superb. However, the story was worse than a day-time TV drama written by high school kids. When you have to repeatedly say "what the fuck," to get a few giggles, it is a sign of cheap, lazy writing. I am not a prude and like a good crude expression every once in awhile, but this appeared to be used as a less than funny crutch to prop up a pitiful story. DPAC is a great venue. The staff was friendly and courteous.
If/Then reminded me what I like about live performances. The show was great! I cheered, laughed, got a little choked up, and thoroughly enjoyed the show.
It is difficult to get my husband to attend a play, let alone a musical. Both of us absolutely loved it! Singers/actors were talented, entertaining and fun. Loved many of the comparisons we made between New York and Detroit. Would highly recommend!
My earlier review stated that Jackie Burns and Anthony Rapp did the duet "Here I Go", that is incorrect. Their duet is "Some Other Me." The duet "Here I Go" is performed by Jackie Burns and Matthew Hydzik. (Also excellent!!) Just did not want to confuse anyone...Sorry for the misinformation in the original review.
From the beginning, I was riveted by this unique musical. The story is fabulous, as are the songs, a feat since none of them are instantly recognizable. The performers are at the top of their games are make the show very memorable. I would happily see this over and over again.
The cast was energetic and had great chemistry. My wife and I really had a good time, I would recommend seeing this.
I took my 14 year old niece to see this while she was visiting me on Spring Break. She is into theater and loves musicals. Did not know much about the show and checked some info online and it seemed like an interesting show and storyline and looked like something she would likely enjoy. This show did not disappoint at all. Loved the parallel storylines with Liz and Beth and the story moved along at a good pace. It was hard to believe that it was 2.5 hours long; it was so involving that the time flew by. Jackie Burns was terrific and has an amazing voice. She really knocked her numbers out of the park, especially "Always Starting Over" and her duet with (the excellent) Anthony Rapp: "Here I Go." Everyone in the cast was wonderful: Tamyra Gray, Matthew Hydzik, Janine DiVita and all the others. Great job folks! You were all amazing. This was a memorable and very enjoyable night at the theater. My niece was wowed (and moved; bring some Kleenex, there are some sad moments...) but we both thoroughly enjoyed it. She is involved with Drama Club at school and the choir and all of the performing arts related things so she thought this was just a great show. I agree with her. Kudos to all the cast and crew and orchestra. The only complaint I have is that sometimes the orchestra was a little loud and would tend to drown out some of the lyrics, but it did not happen often enough to be an annoyance; it was just noticeable when it did happen. Your hard work showed and paid off for us! Best wishes to all of you on the rest of the tour; hope your future audiences enjoy it as much as ours did on Thursday night 03/31/2016.
A was performed show with Jackie doing a great job as the lead role. Enjoyed the storyline and show and would recommend it to others
The singing talent was amazing! The idea was very unique! Thank you for an awesome evening!
My husband and I really enjoyed the performance. The story it told was very thought provoking. The one thing that took a little away was the orchestra, after intermission. Seemed as though it was competing with the performers. Overall good production.
This is the story of how our decisions create a chain of events to form a life -path-story. It helps to read a synopsis of the storyline prior to attending the performance. Then sit back and enjoy the complexity and textures of two alternative life paths for the character Liz / Beth and those people in her life. The opening act sets up the two If/Then stories that you will jump between throughout the performance.
I laughed, I cried (so did my husband). Its worth paying extra to sit up close. Anthony Rapp was amazing per usual! You leave the theater re-examining your life, even if your life is amazing... You start think, well "what if".
I attended the April 2nd show. The performances are incredible and the songs/dialogue is very humorous. I found myself thinking about my own life and what might have resulted if I had made other choices. I recommend this show. It is well worth the admission.
I like the staging. The cast is superb all the way through - singing and acting. I saw Charissa Bertels (understudy) as Kate - she was wonderful in the part. She could easily be promoted to the role full time. The story line is clever - following both paths of the fork in the road. But for me the only demerit is that the songs don't grab me. But the cast does a beautiful job performing the songs. Jackie Burns is worth the price of admission herself.
The touring cast of "If / Then" was fantastic! We sat front row and were mesmerized through the entire performance. Every cast member was remarkable in their acting, singing, & dancing. It triggered many "If /Then" memories for us & we are still having them & sharing them with each other. Both the musicians & actors made this play one to remember for a long time to come. :)
I've seen many musicals over the years (as in over 40, in at least four different major cities) and chose to see this one based on the acclaim it had received while on Broadway. We went on the night it opened in Detroit. Truly, this is now one of my favorite musicals - the acting was impressive, the voices sublime but the staging was nothing less than brilliant. To keep two separate story lines moving forward and around each other as if they were in a dance was nothing less than stage-crafting genius. Kudos to the director just as much as to the actors in this show! I would highly recommend this relatively "unknown" musical (most people I've spoken to have never heard of it) to anyone wanting to enjoy a truly modern work that hits all emotions and is a beautiful experience. As a woman who was "starting over" around the same age as the main character, I found many touchstones within the dialog and lyrics that resonated strongly with me. Huge props to the lead, Jackie Burns, who is in every scene (except maybe two?) and who's voice and talent stays strong throughout. It was also great to get to see Anthony Rapp perform live after admiring his performances over the years.
Loved the musical! I almost didn't go see it but so glad I did! The story and the characters kept me entertained the entire time.
