HOT CHIP IN CONCERT:

Hot Chip lights up the dance floor every time they take the stage to deliver their inventive, synthesizer-driven take on electronic pop. In addition to traditional instruments like guitar, bass, and drums, this British septet incorporates a bevy of synths, drum machines, and unexpected samples to produce their infectious grooves in concert. The resulting sound is monumentally funky, endearingly quirky, and impossible to deny. Dance floor anthems like “Don’t Deny Your Heart”, “How Do You Do It?”, and “Burning Up” are guaranteed to have you shaking your booty and breaking a sweat. Hot Chip is taking their discotheque-meets-art-gallery vibe on tour to promote their 2015 album Why Make Sense?, promising ticket buyers a freaky dance party they won’t be able to resist.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Alexis Taylor (lead vocals/guitar/synths) and Joe Goddard (vocals/synths/percussion) founded Hot Chip while attending Cambridge University in 2000. By the time of their 2004 full-length debut Coming on Strong, the duo had added Owen Clark (guitar/bass/synths), Al Doyle (guitar/synths/percussion), and Felix Martin (drum machines/percussion) to their live performances. The new members contributed to the band’s 2008 album Made in the Dark, which featured popular singles like “Shake a Fist” and heralded a new echelon of success for the group. Hot Chip added Rob Smoughton (backing vocals/bass/guitar/percussion) and Sarah Jones (drums) to round out their performing lineup, with both becoming official members shortly thereafter. The band maintains a rigorous touring and recording schedule, and while they might look like they’re playing musical chairs as they trade instruments on stage, they maintain a lively and cohesive sound that has thrilled audiences around the world.

Hot Chip was a terrible disappointment, left early

by MrFoobar on 9/14/12Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I was looking forward to Hot Chip for my Fox Theater deflowering. I got loge tickets. The seats in that area are large and set in pairs with cocktail tables in between. The rows are far apart, so there's plenty of legroom. Of course the renovated Fox is jaw-droppingly gorgeous. The youtube videos of the opener, Yacht, were enticing, but the sound was unpleasantly muddy. I hoped this would only be a problem for them, but the larger number of instruments in Hot Chip just made the sound worse. The vocals were too prominent and disasterously out of tune at the beginning, and the sound was even more muddy. There was a weird emphasis on the center frequencies. We left early, and werent alone in doing so.

    Event was pretty good

by Anonymous on 9/13/12Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

The show was pretty good. Hot Chip did and awesome job and had lots of new variation on old classics. the only real downside to the event was the sound levels were poor. They boosted the bass way too much and so overall the sound was really muddy. At times it was really hard to hear the guitar or synth parts while the vocals and drums were very clear. The venue could use some improvement either on it's sound system or just the sound guy himself needs to balance out the bass more.

As usual, Hot Chip was a fun show to watch but was it just me or did they slow down their tempo a bit? I went thinking that I would dance my a** off but just wasn't as "dance-able" as the last show. It was still a great show regardless!

Hot chip not as great this time around

    by kelli333 on 9/13/12Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Saw them two years ago, same venue. Completely different vibe. This show was just ok. Great lights and visual effects, but overall lackluster music. Last show we danced hard this one not so much. Played a lot off new album and When they finally would play their hits (only a few played!) they were remixed to the point we could barely tell what song it was!

    Laiddd back!

by ceematt on 9/13/12Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Hot Chip is always a great live show, but having YACHT as an opener was awesome. I couldn't think of too many frontmen/women different than with these two bands, so they're an oddly appropriate pairing. :)

    Hot Chip was the Ship!

by ChipFan on 9/12/12Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Hot Chip + Hollywood Bowl was a great combination. The set could have been longer but I think they were restricted. We got there early for Passion Pit and in my opinion they were Coldplay - light (whispy, lightweight and just OK). But Hot Chip had great energy and sound. Would definitely see them again.

    Passion Pit - Hot Chip

by musicalgeius on 9/12/12Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

What a fantastic show! Couldn't have asked for a better sunday evening. Weather, per usual, was great. I wished Passion Pit went second but once Hot Chip started playing I forgot all about PP.

    Not quite loud enough

by PegasusBicycle on 9/12/12Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I could hardly understand the vocals for both acts. I thought maybe it was just Passion Pit because I had never seen them live, but then Hot Chip came on and there was the same problem. The music was still good, though. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked Omar Souleyman. Fun, interesting music to get the crowd pumped up.

Will force you to get up and dance

    by WiseLatina310 on 9/12/12Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Both Passion Pit and Hot Chip rocked it! They sound amazing live. I loved that they primarily played their upbeat songs. They played some of their new stuff but also their popular older songs. The Hollywood Bowl is an amazing venue and the price for the seats I purchased was a super deal! I hope both bands are at Coachella in 2013.

hot chip was great aside from mixing/feedback

by Anonymous on 9/12/12Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Well honestly this show was rather dissappointing. Omar Souleyman's set had no energy and could not to be heard over the throngs of people showing up late. Michael Angelakos, of Passion Pit, could have easily been drunk as he sloppily sang most of the material from Chunk of Change and Manners but very little from the album they're touring with, Gossamer. Most of the songs just sounded like bad versions of tracks off the album and many unique bits of the sound that could have been played live, like the sax on "The Reeling", was just a playback as the band stood around. Hot Chip was by far the best of the night though, with a good mix of new and old, steel drums and bongos, and a great presence with the crowd. However, all of the bands were plagued by sound issues that would seem to have been The Bowl's fault. Souleyman was quiet and only into the set was the volume increased a bit, although it was still rather difficult to hear. Another problem could have been the problem that the KCRW host never showed up to the concert, and Souleyman just started playing without introduction. Passion Pit was loud although every once in a while random aspects of the sound like bass and treble were bumped for a few seconds to a minute. You couldn't hear the guitars in Hot Chip although this didn't stop frequent feedback issues although at least the set was loud! I was really looking forward to all three performances but in my opinion only Hot Chip delivered a really good show.

Everything was fantastic about this show at Hollywood Bowl! It sounded great, the energy was radiant and the crowd was such a good time group of people! I only wish it had lasted a bit longer!

    Hot Chip AMAZING!

by dlnogales on 8/13/12The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

Great site and great party with Hot Chip! We're from Barcelona (Spain) and we were on vacation for several U.S. cities. When we learned that they would be in Philadelphia we think of buying tickets in advance but just a month ago we saw in the Sonar festival in our city. The place we liked and how soon we were in the front row. Chromatics good openers too!

    Great Concert

by nutricita on 7/23/12The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

I really enjoyed the concert at Electric Factory. I had already seen Hot Chip in NYC but here I could see all the members as well as enjoy the music much better. My boyfriend, who did not know the band, also enjoyed their music, which is perfect for dancing. They are great live.
