About

In the years between 2018's BAMBI and LP3, Minneapolis' Hippo Campus -- made up of vocalist/guitarists Jake Luppen and Nathan Stocker, drummer Whistler Allen, bassist Zach Sutton, and trumpeter DeCarlo Jackson -- has grown up and into itself. Although the five-piece has been friends since middle school and put out a number of studio releases since its inception, it's the new record, LP3, that's the most honest portrait of who Hippo Campus is. It's also a study in the nuances of growing up -- coming to terms with mortality, the confusing journey of sexuality, bottoming out, seeing decisions from the night before in the harsh morning light; finding your identity as a person and as an artist -- how that can be a collision of elation and shame, painful and joyful all at once.

Over the last few years, the Hippo universe has expanded outward. Luppen and Stocker both put out solo records as Lupin and Brotherkenzie respectively, and the two also teamed up with Caleb Hinz to put out the debut Baby Boys record while DeCarlo Jackson founded, and collaborated with multiple bands around the Twin Cities, including DNM, Arlo, and FPA. Navigating solo projects and new dynamics and the spotlight alone is humbling, bringing up new insecurities and defense mechanisms. It was challenging in its own way to branch outside of Hippo -- and it made the eventual return to the project feel like coming home.

LP3 is, then, their strongest and most complete work yet -- a freshly-inked portrait excavating young adulthood and identity and, more importantly, how that personal identity fits into a larger camaraderie. It looks at how growing up can just feel like something that's always moving past you when you're trying to grab a hold of it; it's a push-and-pull of letting go or holding tighter -- and figuring out what matters the most. Through cinematic, sonic clarity, LP3 is a sweeping account of courage and tenacity; tender-hearted stumbling that leads you on the right path after all.

The best concert I’ve been to, and I’ve seen a lot

by Starkid2196 on 10/31/17Deluxe at Old National Centre - Indianapolis

Hippo Campus brings such a fun, carefree energy to their shows. The opener was great, the people around me were great, even the line to get into the venue was great! They do a really amazing job of making you feel like you’re the only one in the room when they play. It’s just you, them, and the music and I could not have asked for anything better. Additionally, meeting Jake and Zach from the band after was just the cherry on top to a perfect show. It is a Tuesday, the concert was on Saturday, and I am still reminiscing about that night. I wish I could go back because it was THAT good. Wondering if you should go see Hippo Campus? The answer is a definite yes.

Hippo Campus made me a fan

by Indietrash on 5/30/17Newport Music Hall - Columbus

From beginning to end this concert was fantastic. Hippo Campus gave a killer performance with insane vocals and their personalities were wonderful. I honestly wasn't the biggest fan of this band before the show and only knew a few songs, but now I can't stop listening to their music!!

    Amazing Show

Hippo Campus is sensational while performing live. The band got the crowd involved, and I had lost my voice part way through the show.

A Night to Never, Ever Forget

by wibbylilliams on 5/23/17Newport Music Hall - Columbus

Bottom line, these guys know how to have a good time on stage, with the audience, and with each other. For being so young and to take on a stage with such enthusiasm and comfortable was astonishing. I go to 15+ concerts a year, and I can comfortably say that their show at Newport is going straight into my "Top 5 Favorite Performances of All Time." These gentlemen rock like old school pros. It was extra special as well because the lead singer, Jake, was turning 21 that day. Can you believe that 21 and playing at Newport? You know those bands who sound better recorded than live? Not them. They sound good streaming, on vinyl, and live. They can do it all. And with such confidence and elegance.

    jake luppen is an ANGEL

by Anonymous on 5/23/17Newport Music Hall - Columbus

Hippo Campus is easily one of the best bands I've seen live. For starters, Jake's vocals - just, wow. Incredible live. And they are so fun, entertaining to watch. Such a fun experience. The crowd was surprisingly rough though? I was second row and there was a ton of pushing/shoving/people trying to get in front of me. But anywhere you were at in the venue hearing Jake's beautiful voice was enough to have a wonderful night. These guys have pure talent, can't wait to see them again already.

    Unbelievable.

You rarely get a full quality show from beginning to end. Both the opener and the main act were both outstanding. They were better live than their recordings!

by Gingerblue on 3/7/17Middle East and Royale - Cambridge and Boston

Such a talented group of guys. I've seen these guys two times already and I'm excited to see them again in April. They put on a hell of a show and had me dancing throughout their entire set. They have an amazing stage presence and an incredible vibe. They're also really chill individuals and are totally down to hang out and talk after the show. Can't wait to see them again!
