HERBIE HANCOCK IN CONCERT:
Few jazz artists have achieved the degree of crossover success enjoyed by legendary post-bop luminary Herbie Hancock. Beginning with 1973's seminal Headhunters, Hancock unleashed some of the most innovative and accessible jazz funk of his generation, and he continues to innovate both in the studio and on stage. As one of jazz's most beloved living legends, the opportunity to see Hancock is the stuff of fan dreams, making his 2014 appearance at the Hollywood Bowl one of the most coveted concert events of the summer.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Born in Chicago, Hancock was recognized as a child prodigy from an early age, receiving a classical music education and performing with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as early as age 11. Despite not having a jazz teacher, Hancock developed a unique harmonic sense by ear, earning a reputation with his exceptional piano playing that ultimately caught the attention of Miles Davis. After joining Davis's Second Great Quintet in 1963, Hancock enjoyed a period of tremendous success and growth as he forged a unique and influential style. His association with the Blue Note label resulted in some of the most popular jazz records of the '60s, but it wasn't until the 1973 release of Headhunters that he would achieve international superstardom. The album marked a watershed moment in the development of jazz funk, skyrocketing to the top of the Jazz Albums chart with now-classic crossover hits like "Chameleon" and "Watermelon Man." Always one to experiment, Hancock pioneered the use of electronic instruments in jazz, and the results, such as the synth-heavy hit single “Rock It,” found head-bobbing fans across the globe. With more than 40 studio albums and a half-century of touring under his belt, Hancock's continued presence on the road in 2014 is sure to be the stuff of legacy and legend.
FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:
"Herbie Hancock wove all of the jazz classics he made famous in to new arrangements that gave his ensemble a platform to demonstrate their superb individual talents. The group played over two hours and then played an encore."
"Great Show... A nice mix of Herbie Hancock's jazz classics, some newer songs, and an improv piece. Very innovative encore especially if you want to see someone doing a jazz solo with Conch Shells!"
"Virtuoso musicians treated us to unexpected and unimaginably difficult rhythmic interplay. Each player was completely in control of his instrument and contributed equally to the magic of the event. At 71, Herbie brought the fire and burned up the stage."
Great band, great venue! Really special! Thank you Herbie!!!!
What a great show from a super showman! He’s Team of musicians was top notch, the best of the best!
Herbie Hancock is an icon and he showed us his playfulness and ever new and creative jazz spirit! The venue was also lovely, well organized, comfortable, and good sight lines. Thank you!
I went with 2 buddies and All 3 of us was 100% into the show! Herbie Hancock & his band was absolutely Amazing. It was our first time seeing Herbie. Would we do it again? Are you kidding me? Heck Yes! Herbie Hancock ROCKS!
If you love the older BlueNote or Miles material, don't bother to go. Show was mostly his 70's electric material with one nod to the past with a nice version of Wayne Shorter's "Footprints." The entire show was less then an hour and a half with no encore
Herbie and company were amazing Sold out show! Worth the $$$
Legendary showman, great musicians, full house, intimate setting
From beginning to end Herbie Hancock's concert was amazing, esp at Jimmy's Jazz in Portsmouth NH. His band's talent and experience and all instruments are phenomenal!!
Fantastic show by Herbie Hancock and the accompanying musicians, Jimmy’s Jazz and Blues Club is a superb listening venue with excellent food and service.
World class artist and band! I was just happy to be in the same room with him!
Show was fabulous. The musicians were non-pareil.
Herbie brings nothing but the best. Want him to come back so badly and My partner and I couldn’t have asked for anything more at the show
Herbie Hancock’s quartet was on fire. Jimmy’s was the perfect host.
the venue was accommodating beyond my wildest expectations and herbie is still a master of his trade
The music was fantastic the food a service was good. The disappointment was a hired camera person taking pictures on our left and right leaning on balcony railing. It was distracting and happened for most of the show. When purchasing tickets I bought 1 row balcony assuming we would be in front of balcony railing. Instead we sat behind other people. The description of seating purchase is poor
Just a lion difficult getting used to being around that many people after the past 20 months...and a long time to be masked...but still worth it!
It turned out to be three concerts in one. Show started at 7pm and ended at 11pm. Robert Glasper did a thirty minute set, then they set up Kamasi Washington's band who played for little over an hour. They then cleared the stage and set up for Herbie Hancock and his band who played for about an hour and a half. Some great jams with Kamasi Washington guesting with Hancock's band. There were three approximately thirty minute intermissions as they set up each groups equipment.
The band is world class! There were new spins on the hit songs and creative improvs by Herbie and the soloists. Herbie is a living legend and his contributions to music are among the greatest of all. His songwriting has always been innovative and inventive and he is amazingly high energy for his age. So glad I went to this show!!!
Especially when Kamasi came on stage to pay with Herbie and the boys. Sensationalllll!!!!
Who would have thought this 79yo Herbie Hancock would pack the Greek theatre and play terrific music? It was spectacular! He also had some words about unity and climate change that made all of us stand up and applaud.
