HERBIE HANCOCK IN CONCERT:

Few jazz artists have achieved the degree of crossover success enjoyed by legendary post-bop luminary Herbie Hancock. Beginning with 1973's seminal Headhunters, Hancock unleashed some of the most innovative and accessible jazz funk of his generation, and he continues to innovate both in the studio and on stage. As one of jazz's most beloved living legends, the opportunity to see Hancock is the stuff of fan dreams, making his 2014 appearance at the Hollywood Bowl one of the most coveted concert events of the summer.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Chicago, Hancock was recognized as a child prodigy from an early age, receiving a classical music education and performing with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as early as age 11. Despite not having a jazz teacher, Hancock developed a unique harmonic sense by ear, earning a reputation with his exceptional piano playing that ultimately caught the attention of Miles Davis. After joining Davis's Second Great Quintet in 1963, Hancock enjoyed a period of tremendous success and growth as he forged a unique and influential style. His association with the Blue Note label resulted in some of the most popular jazz records of the '60s, but it wasn't until the 1973 release of Headhunters that he would achieve international superstardom. The album marked a watershed moment in the development of jazz funk, skyrocketing to the top of the Jazz Albums chart with now-classic crossover hits like "Chameleon" and "Watermelon Man." Always one to experiment, Hancock pioneered the use of electronic instruments in jazz, and the results, such as the synth-heavy hit single “Rock It,” found head-bobbing fans across the globe. With more than 40 studio albums and a half-century of touring under his belt, Hancock's continued presence on the road in 2014 is sure to be the stuff of legacy and legend.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Herbie Hancock wove all of the jazz classics he made famous in to new arrangements that gave his ensemble a platform to demonstrate their superb individual talents. The group played over two hours and then played an encore."

"Great Show... A nice mix of Herbie Hancock's jazz classics, some newer songs, and an improv piece. Very innovative encore especially if you want to see someone doing a jazz solo with Conch Shells!"

"Virtuoso musicians treated us to unexpected and unimaginably difficult rhythmic interplay. Each player was completely in control of his instrument and contributed equally to the magic of the event. At 71, Herbie brought the fire and burned up the stage."

    Wonderful night

by Vickiels on 4/9/24State Theatre - Minneapolis

We sat down and were immediately covered with notes of pearl and satin for 2 hours and 20 minutes. These 6 musicians were outstanding. Herbie was a gracious host and performer and guided us through an amazing night of jazz and fusion. Loved every second and would do it again and again. Well done Herbie Hancock and friends!

The band rocked, and Herbie Hancock was fully engaged. This was no "put my kids through college"tour. It was an unbelievable night.

    An exceptional jazz genius

    by J W on 4/7/24State Theatre - Minneapolis

The intelligence, dexterity, finesse, and power of Herbie Hancock are a challenge to accurately describe. If anyone was looking for a "smooth jazz"event, they were in the wrong place. If there for stellar talent and performance genius, each and every member of the group delivered more than they could have hoped for!

    It flew by

by Rac on 4/7/24State Theatre - Minneapolis

Gracious Herbie let his lesser-known but immensely talented stage mates fly, with improvised solos, as Hancock ran through a history of highlights while not stalling in the past. Those guys know how to rock any dump.

    Amazing concert!

by Ted G on 4/7/24State Theatre - Minneapolis

As expected, the Herbie Hancock concert surpassed expectations. Herbie was in top form and the band lineup was phenomenal. The concert in many ways was a resurrection of The Headhunters band. The sound was amazing. It sounded like a recording. Overall it was as a transcendent evening.

Still Dancin' at 84--Herbie Hancock's is Superb!

by Jules Verne on 4/6/24Orpheum Theater - Madison

At the end of the show in Madison Wisconsin's Orpheum Theater to a packed house, Herbie Hancock and company proved jazz music is the secret to eternal life! Dancin' on stage with his Roland guitar/keyboard in hand, slapping jazz out of the keys and literally jumping up and down over and over to the gleeful final song. Herbie Hancock, who just turned 84 proved with every song in the two hour set that he is a legendary performer, musician, and songwriter. Backed by the steady hands of Trevor Lawrence on Drums, arranger and Terence Blanchard on Trumpet and occasional key boards, and the youthful corps youth corps of Lionel Loucke wielding his Guitar, Devin Daniels on Saxophone and stalwart James Genus on Electric Bass backing Hancock. Catch them if you can as their tour -Superb!

    Herbie inspires, Orpheum sound sucks

by Bradley on 4/6/24Orpheum Theater - Madison

I had 2nd row seats to see this truly inspired master play. Herbie was fantastic, humble, and articulate. His fellow musicians played well and obviously enjoy time on stage with him. Unfortunately the Orpheum Theatre don’t plan or seem to care about sound. I should have heard every glorious high, mid and low note, but the bass roll off was so daunting, it just covered everything. Bummer

    Very enjoyable

by Anonymous on 3/26/24Old National Centre - Indianapolis

I will be honest. I didn’t know the names to any of the songs but it was an extremely enjoyable concert because I enjoy jazz music. Herbie is a wonderful performer and he has a terrific band behind him also. I loved it when he got out the synthesizer and was walking around playing it. You can tell he really enjoys what he does.

    A beautiful evening.

by Clif on 3/25/24Old National Centre - Indianapolis

Until now, I never had the privilege to see Herbie live. Seeing him live was one of the experiences on my bucket list. I could not have chosen a better venue and show. My expectations were eclipsed at every turn. The Murat Theater is a beautiful venue to host this legendary trailblazing musical virtuoso. The environment was comfortable and relaxing. The auditorium acoustics were flawless. I invested in the VIP Parking and VIP club package. The accommodations were second to none. I am a wheelchair bound rehabilitating quadriplegic. The entire staff was exceedingly attentive from the parking lot attendants to the venue host Marianne. I have to give a special thanks to the venue supervisor who's name escapes me at the present (please forgive me). She went out of her way to ensue that I had the best seats available that would accommodate a wheelchair bound concert guest. The bar has been set very high. I look forward to the next opportunity to experience another show at the Murat Theater.

    Henie has it!

by Jazz Fan on 9/19/23Moore Theatre - Seattle

The concert was fantastic. I really appreciate a seasoned entertainer who can show off his band. He did an amazing job of profiling each one with in the contact of the songs. His drummer is fantastic. Herbie is so much fun to watch, he doesn’t even think about the music. He plays as fluently and you would speak your native language, without thinking, his mind is directly connected to those hands. Thank you Herbie and band.

    Must See

by Nanotomic on 9/19/23Moore Theatre - Seattle

A must see evening that showcases Hancock’s virtuosity as a player, composer, band leader and mentor to the future of jazz. He plays like a man half his age or younger and keeps the energy going all night with reinterpretations of classics that are deftly spun by his well selected and eclectic accomplices in sound making. At the Moore theater in Seattle, the sound board beautifully amplified and isolated each musician so that you could hear each note. It was well balanced and easy on the ears. Do yourself a favor and see this group!!

    Herbie Hancock at the Moore

by erickc on 9/19/23Moore Theatre - Seattle

Amazing concert. Performance was excellent, sound was great! Very, very good experience that evening. The Moore is a good place for shows because of the intimate nature of a smaller crowd.
